Being a good therapist is more than listening to a patient; it involves a lot of meticulous work. There are many guidelines set out for therapist in order to help themselves and their clients in many ways. An important way for a therapist to do a good job is to keep good records. These records can range from session notes, making reports of abuse, getting adequate permissions and paperwork filled out, and general management and maintenance of their records. Therapist also must have guidelines for themselves and their clients in order to maximize how much they will be able to help their client. There are guidelines such: no personal relationships with patients, staying professional, only treating within area of expertise, and knowing danger
their clients (American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 2015). The therapist must “provide professional assistance to people without descrimation on the basis of race, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability, religion, or relationship status” (American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 2015). Therapist must also keep confidentiality with assessing their clients. For example: the therapist cannot tell other family members what findings that the counselor found while counseling any other clients.
A sixteen year old teenager refuses to leave home and the therapist must review the situation from a MRI therapeutic approach. First, the MRI approach would not focus on the problem or how it developed but rather what efforts have the parent made to reach a resolution. MRI stems from the premise that families use practical attempts at resolving their situation but the attempts are ill-advised. MRI’s main focus is aimed at dilemma driven solutions; there is no advantage in long term change or what capacity the problem serves within the family.
For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to be a mental health therapist. I want to work with kids and help them through whatever they might be going through. I want to be able to talk about what it is like to have a mental health issue.
To be a Physical Therapist there are certains types of educational requirements that are needed to be in this type of career field. Those requirements include having a graduate degree that is from accredited academic programs. In order to complete this degree it will take about three years. In the article Types of Theories: Theoretical Orientation and Practices of Therapists by John M. Grohol, the author reviews the four-main school of theory and therapy techniques that are utilized in practice. In my opinion Grohol is a great job in explaining about each theory and giving examples of each of them, I also think he wrote this article in simple enough terms than anyone will be able to read and learn more about psychology and counseling in itself.
When asking for a counselor or finding a mental health program, always ask for someone who has a good reputation. Remember that finding a counselor to help you depends on how you interact with the counselor and how they interact with you. It may take a couple of times to find the right person, but do not give up. Finding a good counselor will pay off for you in the long run, so be persistent in finding the right person for you.

The main focus of a therapist is to unbiased, a therapist needs to show the client that they are open and understanding about their problems and feelings. When a person is going into therapy they are trained to have keep their personal needs and thoughts to their selves. Thinking of the client and how one can help them can focus the therapist mind to what is important. One of the things I believe can better the relationship with the client is to have “confidentiality”. Reminding the client that whatever is said in the session will not be spoken, can help form better bonds and in turn form trust. In turn, a counselor can be of help when a client is looking for guidance or clarity of a matter.
Victims of abuse feel alone, lost, and almost always feel helpless, but wouldn’t it be amazing if you could single handily help a survivor recover? This is exactly what many psychologists and therapists around the country do every day. Many colleges offer amazing programs for this profession and after comparing University or Texas Rio Grande Valley, Central Washington University, and University of Chicago based on my criteria of location, my choice of work, and tuition, UTRGV would be the best choice in helping to pursue a career in therapy. Although it is not said directly, many survivors of abuse do not fully feel safe talking about their abuse; but with therapy you can help them open up and recover.
Safety - The therapist is responsible for all issues regarding safety, including the personal safety of themselves and the client, safety of the everything in the room and building, or, if not yourself, knowing who is responsible for the building management.
Are you looking for someone to talk to about those little things that you just cannot share with your family or friends? Maybe you have taken on too much work or maybe you just feel sad. Many times people take on too much in their personal or professional lives and need to find a balance between the two. Others have experienced a traumatic experience at some point in their life, and other people just need someone to talk to. Sometimes, there’s no getting around seeing a therapist. Trying to pull yourself out of a bad period is a courageous act. If anyone tries to tell you to stop going because you don’t need it or that therapy is for the weak, ignore them. They cannot tell you how to think or feel.
I believe that what is truly important in therapy, is the ability to empathize with the patient, it is essential to continue a successful therapeutic process. Empathy must be built from the first meeting and in many cases when we fail to this, it could be very difficult to build it for the next meetings, however, it can be achieved. This can happen often with adolescents, I would say that teenagers are the most difficult population to establish rapport, since this is the shortest stage of life in which we all feel that we know everything, and also nobody understands us. In addition, some teenagers think that therapists are outdated and old fashioned dinosaurs, but when empathy has achieved in therapy, the result is truly rewarding.
I know that this is something that I should say to your face, but for right now that is hard for me. I just want you to know how much I appreciate you. Thank you for helping me hold this mess that I am creating by going to therapy. This is something that I will eventually be able to clean up but for right now I don't know how to sort through all of this without just throwing it around semi haphazardly. But through all this mess I am creating, I see you.
In this article this man talks about how he has been a therapist for 10 years and he has chosen this spoke because it spoke loudly to him. He said when he was looking for a job that went deeper than just being a job. That’s also what I want and why I think being a therapist would be good for me. He also states that he quit his job because it was simply not interesting anymore, he was seeing the same thirty people a week for what felt like forever to him. He said he was not learning as much as he did when he first started. He stated that he has acquired a great skill set in being a therapist but it just wasn’t exciting and he didn’t learn anything new anymore.
