Getting parents involved is essential to supporting the development of a child with hearing loss. Counselling parents on the type and degree of hearing loss their child has and the effects of hearing loss is important. It is important to not focus solely on what the child cannot hear but also what the child can hear. Parents will need a lot of support in the beginning and it is my job as an audiologist to provide information and my professional advice. The goal is to help parents make the choices that are right for them and create positive outcomes for the child. Furthermore, I was instructed by my own Audiologist to wear hearing aids in both ears on a daily basis—especially at school. This was quite a culture shock to me as I had lived my life thus far without clearly struggling in school, social settings, and eight years of sports due to any hearing issues. It took me a while to embrace my disability and develop a positive outlook on the situation. Little did I know, it would serve as a blessing in disguise for the rest of my life. In light of my situation, I decided to study Communication Sciences and Disorders at Florida State University in hopes of becoming an Audiologist myself. I want to be there for my future patients who will go through the same experience as I have. Most importantly-- I want to be able to comfort them from a place that stems from personal experience. I want to become an Audiologist that not only counsels those on hearing loss, but one that promotes the proper safety, treatment, and protection of the human hearing system. As I have gotten further in to my major, I’ve noticed that an aspect of Audiology that is sometimes overlooked, is the importance of counseling that goes into it. I feel that my personal experience would highly qualify me as a compassionate and empathetic Audiologist that can enhance patient awareness of hard-of-hearing individuals and safe hearing practices. Looking forward, I envision myself

This was a unique and influential program for me, because it combined not only my interest in communication disorders, but also cultural differences. It also gave me the privilege to spend a year in Argentina as a student to immerse myself in the culture and achieve an improved level of fluency in the language. Through varied pre-clinical and clinical experiences, I was introduced to the idea that audiologists are more than just the people who give out hearing aids. Rather, through observation and interaction, it became clear that an audiologists’ job is not just detecting a hearing loss, but also in educating the patient and their family, sharing resources to improve quality of life, and a determination to investigate new techniques and technologies to provide better care. Furthermore, it became clear that part of an audiologist’s role is to demonstrate compassion and willingness to listen carefully to their patients, both of which are characteristics that I hope to

A Speech Pathologist would not be needed, as it is a hearing, rather than speech-communication problem. Dr. Stacy’s recommendations for Thomas would to first and foremost attempt to correct the problem with behind-the-ear hearing aids since he is prone to earwax build-up. A traditional behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing would be his best fit. Not only would they aid in amplification, but they might also help to solve the tension in the household. Thomas would be able to use them every day, whether he is at home or not. If BTE hearing aids ended up as an inappropriate or comfortable choice for Thomas, she would then recommend an Assisted Listening Device (ALD), such as a personal amplifier. This would reduce background noise and increase the sound levels. Dr. Stacy could also recommend an infrared ALD system in conjunction with his hearing aids for use such as in a restaurant. In the aural rehabilitation plan for Thomas, Dr. Stacy will evaluate him to ensure his hearing aids are the most appropriate fit. She would perform the assessment based on his diagnosis and extent of his hearing loss, as well as his
