Belize, formally known as British Honduras, is a small, beautiful country located on the Caribbean coast of northern Central America with a population of about 347,369. Belize is well-known for being the only country in Central America where English is their main language. Belizeans speak Kriol, Spanish, and English, most being trilingual. It is also known for its beautiful beaches, the Maya pyramid, its two carnivals, and is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world. Belize is a Parliamentary Democracy, meaning, the people of Belize elect Representatives to a parliament to make laws, and the leader becomes the Prime Minister. Belize Defence Force (BDF) is Belize’s Military. It includes the Army, Air Wing, and the Volunteer Guard. To join the BDF you have to be at least 18 years old, a Belizean, have a High School Diploma, and pass a physical test with no record of health problems. The Belize Defence Force only accepts one person per year and when recruited it will be a 17-week program. Not sure if woman are allowed to join or volunteer. The Military is volunteer only, draft if only there aren 't enough volunteers. Their motto is, “shoulder to shoulder,” meaning unity within the organization. They all strive to protect Belize and work together as a team.

Hondureno catracho (the national nickname) can be amusing; insulting , or friendly depending on the context “catracho” comes from the name Florencio Xatruch , the general who led the Honduran expeditionary force against William Walker in Nicaragua in 1856. The culture is very unique and interesting. The violence is terrifying , especially the security , you can basically get away with anything without getting caught or in any legal problems. The Belize colony has a lot of different names but the main name is the “British Honduras”. The name of the indigenous people are called the “Mayas”. The location of this colony is south america, the indigenous people of this land are Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina etcetera, but altogether the population comes up to 30 million indigenous people of all 12 different kinds. The cause that made the Maya people move to south america (belize) was that their was a war in Yucatán and the Maya lost and the Legislative Assembly did not let them own land so they had the choice to either rent land or reservations, and now they live in the Belize.

Columbus Day is a holiday widely celebrated throughout the Americas. It is a holiday commemorating the voyage, Christopher Columbus made for when he landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492. “Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.” His voyage was so successful that when he returned to Spain, he came with goods that the Europeans had never seen. The discovery of new merchandise brought about the Age of Exploration and in 1937, October 12th was officially named Columbus Day and nationally celebrated in the United States by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
