Hardships are what compel life. Without the struggle, majority of people wouldn’t have a character. Everyone would be the same and you wouldn’t be the you, you are today. In the book “gifted hands”, Ben Carson underwent a multitude of rough patches as a child. Ben’s dad left and his mother was mentally ill. They moved around and lived in poverty majority of his life. Hardships have the power to make a break a person, as Roman poet, Horace, once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Everyone has or will have to face adversity at some point in their lives, it is a universal truth. Although misfortunes usually have a negative connotation, depending on the struggle and how one deals with it, it is likely the person will come out of misfortune better prepared for the world. Contrastly, if a person never experienced any hardships, they would lack a sophisticated understanding of the world and lack the ability to handle difficult situations. Adversity gives people strength they can not obtain with success.
Over the years I have faced many trials in my life. Like Frederick Douglass, I had to fight and learn to make the best of a bad situation. He had to find ways to learn to read and write on his own, where as I had to learn to support not only myself but a new life alone. How we faced hardship greatly influences our success in life.
Everyone faces struggles in their life. Some allow those struggles to help build them as a person, others let those struggles tear them down. For me, I allowed my struggles to help me develop academically and personally. Without struggle there is no progress.

Many people face challenges and obstacles at a very young age and that can change who they are as they grow up. My grandma faced a very harsh and unfortunate childhood. Her father died when she was 17 and that changed her life and her future. It meant she was given many responsibilities since she was the eldest out of her siblings. She had to do many house chores such as cooking, washing the clothes and dishes and waking up early in the morning to get water from a nearby well every day! This placed a very large obstacle in her life at a very young age. She had to leave school at a very young age because of all the responsibilities she was given and had to overcome these obstacles and face them with great integrity. But due to these obstacles that she has overcome, it has changed who she is now. She struggled in life right from when she was just a little kid. But if she hadn’t overcome these obstacles she wouldn’t have been a very independent woman like she is today. If her father hadn’t died when she was young, she probably would have had a completely different
“Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” (John C. Maxwell). Ben Carson has exemplified this quote by his perpetual efforts to transform his abilities and empower those around him. Ben Carson is one of the world’s foremost pediatric neurosurgeons. He was rated by the Time issue titled “America’s Best” as a “super surgeon”. He was also selected by CNN and Time as one of the nation’s top 20 physicians and scientists, and by the Library of Congress as one of 89 “living legends”. Coming from humble beginnings, he still managed to attend University and became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital at age 33. He is known for successfully separating conjoined twins and performing a hemispherectomy (a very rare surgical procedure). He currently works at the John Hopkins Medical School where he is the Professor and Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery, and is also a presidential candidate for the United States of America. The John Hopkins Hospital views him as a phenomenal physician. Dr. Carson uses his dedication and God-given talent to take on seemingly impossible operations. He provides hope for many children through his medical operations. Ben Carson wrote several books that describes his life and struggles while also providing motivation for readers. Carson encountered many obstacles that challenged him on his way to success. Many people would view these challenges as stumbling blocks,
Everyone experiences adversity. Challenges that everyday people experience can potentially shape, improve, or destroy one's sense of self and personality. Through all these hardships and seemingly impenetrable obstacles, the most pertinent component of one's ability to overcome can only be shown in actions taken despite the odds. People have one of two options; to let those obstacles overwhelm them and keep them from pursuing all that they were destined to accomplish, or to march forward, fight harder and push past the seemingly impossible circumstances to become greater than they ever expected to be, but until they take the step that enables them to be successful -- they are stranded. All of our actions, mistakes, successes, and behaviors shape our person and what we can or cannot become, but what will always matter is our individual decisions and actions not those of the people around us because at the end of the day, we are the ones who have to deal with ourselves.
In life everyone will face some form of hardship. Some people may not go through as many hardships as some others might but we all still have our own personal problems. In my life I have not faced many hardships like some others have which I am very grateful for such things not happening to me. But even though I haven't gone through many hardships I have still had my own fair share of personal hardships. One such hardship I have gone through twice is overcoming the death of a loved one.
