Various managers at a salon will allow their employers to attend a course group that will keep the workers up-to-date on their techniques and styles (Heos 33). To be a cosmetologist one has to never terminate themselves from educating themselves, a hairstylist will be lifelong learners. They’ll stay on top of the latest styles and techniques (Heos 18). A cosmetologist that works for Aveda once said, “Never stop learning. Say ‘yes’ to change. Stay modern” (Personal Interview). With all the skills to have, knowledge of all the benefits and current on styles comes with the education in cosmetology as well as surrendering to the laws. Cosmetologists have to strive to make clients happy by giving them their wanted look, making sure the client feels like it’s their go to salon. Prices range from $40 per hour to $26,400 a year. The prices will rise depending on what style the customer wants. For better customer service, one would need to work in a clean environment, in a safe neighborhood where clients can come and have a satisfying time. To get the job they will need to be licensed by the state, a high school diploma, and enrolled in a cosmetology school. A student enrolled in these schools can apply for federal and state financial aid. Federal and state grant programs are offered to eligible students and must be 16 years of age. The highest paid earned more than $41,490 yearly to $12.72 per hour. Cosmetology is a field focused on the treatment of hair, skin, and nails that appeals to people’s creativity and specializes in cutting, styling, and applying chemical perms and color treatments. In a few years cosmetologists can become their own bosses by being independent and one stylist said that “Cosmetology is about bringing out the best in everyone.” Which means that the stylist can have fun doing what they love every day for a future career or part time job in the next few years.
I feel if my beautician constantly asked me what I wanted I would lose confidence in their abilities, and be scared for my life. Cosmetologist do work long days and long hours, so it can be very tiring and stressing on your body. To prevent bad health issues such as back problems, carpal tunnel, and feet problems, it is key to keep proper posture when working and wear shoes with good support. I don’t know about you but if I was a client, I wouldn’t want to be sitting in my beautician’s garbage and last client’s leftover hair. So, if you want to keep your job, keep your area tidy and as professional as possible. Another good skill to obtain, is creativity. Clients love when their hair dresser is already up to date with the latest cuts and styles. Lastly, the most important skill to have is time management. If you’re good at what you do, then you will gain clientele fast. That means you can’t spend all day on just one client. Get the job done in efficient time so you can keep up that clientele.
3. Understanding pH balance is important for cosmetologists because healthy hair and skin both have an ideal range on the pH scale.
Cosmetology is the general work on others hair and skin. The area of cosmetology I am going for is hair. I find working on other people’s hair fun and interesting. Makeup and nails are other areas of interest for me. I am going to be studying cosmetology to become licensed as an entrepreneur for hair, makeup, and helping to make the lives of others better. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or training, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
Candidates must graduate from a state approved program for cosmetology. Salons need to stay current on the new trends and style within the hair industry and a local cosmetology school can help with that. Keeping a current relationship with the local school can help with the technicians learning new techniques from the local school. Most schools hold training classes and continued education courses for current stylist. The school may contact the salon and make them aware of upcoming courses and the manager will relay the messages to the current techs at the salon. Or the Salon and Spa owners will set up training courses to be taking at the salon.
In order to become a cosmetologist, I will have to take certain steps. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, I must graduate from a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school. I must also have a high school diploma or equivalent. The ages vary from state to a state of how old I have to be to attend a hair school. Most states require that I to be at least 17 or 18 to apply. There are some states that will allow enrollment at the age of 16.After I have graduated from a state-approved training I will be required to take a test.The test will be a written test and/or in some cases it may be a test of styling skills or an oral exam. Growing up I always use to like doing my hair, as well as my mothers and sisters hair. I began to do my own hair for school at the age of nine. About six months before I graduated high school, I participated in a fundraiser to support breast cancer /scholarship contest at Aveda Institute, which is a cosmetology school. I saw many creative and talented students at the event, it was amazing! I assumed it was a sign, so as soon as I graduated high school I registered at Aveda. I truly believed that cosmetology was what I wanted to make a career out of, because I enjoy making people feel more confident about their physical appearance. However, attending the institute emphatically demonstrated a sneak preview of what life had in store for me.
Being a hairstylist, it is all about the skills: The artistic skills, the communication skills, also, the skill to be patient and respectful. Some people have a difficult time trying to obtain all of these skills. Hairstylists have a tough job. No one really understands what the stylist goes through. The pressure to get things right and to make the client happy is a complicated situation.
This year in English we read the Salon Success book. This book is helpful but very bland. The book is about how to improve our communication skills as a stylist. Each chapter of the book explains a specific focal point to improve on in our profession. It also gives examples on how to better communicate with clients, co-workers, and build clientele as you further your career. The Salon Success book doesn't only focus on improving your career skills, but your well being such as, managing stress, coping skills, and respect. The lessons in this book can help with your life choices in a business setting as well as outside of the professional industry.
