When you think of Columbus what comes to mind? A hero? A villain? Most people think he is a hero, but many do not think of the things he did to people such as slavery, beatings, raping, etc. He is most known for discovering America, but he only got to the Bahamas. Columbus was an Italian explorer that sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because of the awful things that don’t make up for the discoveries that Christopher Columbus did.

Columbus Day is a holiday widely celebrated throughout the Americas. It is a holiday commemorating the voyage, Christopher Columbus made for when he landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492. “Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.” His voyage was so successful that when he returned to Spain, he came with goods that the Europeans had never seen. The discovery of new merchandise brought about the Age of Exploration and in 1937, October 12th was officially named Columbus Day and nationally celebrated in the United States by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Columbus was an italian explorer who took four voyages across the atlantic ocean. Columbus day should be celebrated because he brought attention to america, its history as one of the oldest holidays. He brought attention to america because of its legacy, discovery of america, and having no change in growth in the population for thousands of years. It also had a great history because of the reason it started, why it was honored, and because of how many years it's been celebrated.

Some say that Columbus Day shouldn't be a holiday or that the name should be changed, I believe that we should get rid of the holiday. When you are little, you are taught Christopher Columbus discovered America and he's a good person; however, in reality, none of that is true. Columbus didn't discover America, he found some islands in the Caribbean like Haiti and Cuba. In addition, he treated the Natives there with harsh cruelties. The Europeans came to America and claimed that they discovered the land. But the truth was that there were Native American people living in America way before the Europeans arrived. Columbus Day is a day on the second Monday of October that recognizes the exploration of America. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who worked in the Spanish government who came to the island of Hispaniola in pursuit of finding a shorter route to India. This controversial holiday sparks many argument about why we shouldn’t have the holiday and others defending the holiday. The good does not make for a good argument against all the bad that the day represents, including: taking a land that was not his, the brutal genocide of Natives, and the enslavement of Natives for illogical reasons.

Lately, there have been some questions to whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. This question is highly debateable, but the accomplishments of Columbus overcome any doubt to whether he should be celebrated. Columbus is one of the most recognized explorers ever, he was ambitious, intelligent, and dedicated. Columbus should have a day commemorating him, and that is self evident.

Columbus Day should not be abolished as a national holiday, because Columbus overcame obstacles to arrive in America (Document E). To begin with, Columbus sailed over an unknown sea, without knowing what was on the other side. If it wasn’t for Columbus’ bravery, America would still be unknown to most of us. Second, he made a great proficiency in geography, astronomy, and drawing, as they were necessary to his favorite pursuit of navigation (Document B). Finally, Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds (Document E). In conclusion Columbus overcame obstacles to find America, so we have to show Columbus some appreciation.

Columbus was an explorer who initiated a series of explorations to the Americas and paved the way for new trade routes to Asia; however, a holiday that is dedicated to a man who ‘found’ a territory already inhabited, and glorifies a voyage that commenced a mass genocide and slave trade should not be celebrated.

Despite Christopher Columbus being celebrated as a hero for centuries, some of his actions would not be celebrated by many. For years Columbus has been considered the first to discover America, but research concludes that a Viking had discovered America long before he did. With more and more information about him popping up, should we really celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus has been given credit for discovering an already discovered country, enslaved the natives of America, and almost completely wiped out the Taino people.

What do I think about Columbus day? I barely know anything about the holiday so clearly it isn't that big of a holiday. I understand that there is history behind it and it’s problem pretty interesting learning about it. But I have never really been taught about it at all. I think that changing the name is not very important. If we don’t celebrate then what is the point of changing it when it is hardly noticeable. Columbus seems like a weird holiday. I do not understand why the close the banks on this day. Learning the history of what he did why would we want to celebrate a day of him, to dedicate a day to him. We have school on this day and if the holiday was a little bigger I would think we would not have school. I think all together they

It represents the birth of values of Western Civilization. Without Columbus other sailors would not have had the convenience of maps to this new land. There would have been no idea of starting a new country or expanding trade and there would have been no introductions of new plant life, or animals. Columbus opened the door to a whole new civilization that has evolved into several great countries, including one which is now considered a global superpower. Under no circumstance should Columbus Day be renamed, or canceled in the United States.
