Intro: Going grocery shopping some people may find some products that promise no GMOs, but what exactly are GMOs? Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are organisms that have been engineered to express desired traits. The most traditional way to modify organisms is through selective breeding. New technology now has given the ability to physically move or add to a new organism. The organisms are altered at the molecular level, usually they receive genes from organisms whose traits could not be obtained easily. Modification is done by using recombinant DNA technology and reproductive cloning. The genetic modification techniques allow new traits to be introduced without complications.(4)

Organisms that have been modified obtain a resistance to insects. Genetically modification generates healthier crops, which can lower the risk of crop failure and make crops more resistant to extreme weather. Less chemicals, less machinery, less land, and less time is need for genetically modified organisms. This can help reduce pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil erosion. More necessary nutrients can be supplied through modification and this can help fight malnutrition. Scientists have also engineered plants to produce vaccines, proteins, and other pharmaceutical goods.(3)
GMOs have many benefits but also have a few negative impacts. Modified organisms can pose allergy risks. When the organism is enhanced, protein is often combined and because it was not in the original organism it can cause allergic reactions (3). Introducing plants and organisms to an ecosystem that they do not occur naturally could damage that environment. Placing modified organisms into the new environment could have bad effects on the current species due to cross breeding and cross pollination. Producing plants that are resistant to bacteria could make the bacteria stronger and harder to kill. Making plants herbicide resistant may lead to weeds also becoming herbicide resistant. Genetically modified organisms haven’t been out very long so there is not yet any long-term research on the effect.(1)
