Why Running a Food Cart in College Might Be Right for You
Countless college students must work to supplement their college financing. Many have discovered early that they prefer to be in business for themselves instead of working for someone else. In fact, running a business can be an excellent way to get a “real world” education while you’re pursuing a degree. One way to do this without starting an entire company is by running a food cart while you’re in college.
Meeting a Need
College students always need to be fed, and snacks of all kinds may aid in fueling all-night study sessions. Running a campus food cart could give the opportunity you’re looking for because you are meeting a true and perpetual need. Once other students know about
Perhaps the biggest factor that causes students to gain weight is the adjustment from eating at home to eating at college. A student from Chicago State University wrote in the school paper that, “Students in their first year away from home are sometimes not experienced in choosing foods or balanced meals” (French). The free-for-all campus style eating allows for unlimited choices of food and no parents to tell students what they can or cannot eat. Dietitian Ann Litt is also quoted in a Washington Post article in stating that, “the all you can eat concept in most college food services is an invitation overeat” (Linder). College dining halls are set up like fast food restaurants, and some even contain a McDonalds or a Pizza Hut. Fast food style eating really has no nutritional value, other than lots of fat and calories. In an article which examined the ways which students eat nutritional professor Christina Economos stated that more than fifty percent of students are eating too much fat, and seventy to eighty percent are getting too much saturated fat. She states that lack of fruit and vegetable consumption and the eating of mostly processed food is the main cause of weight gain among students (Linder). When students enter the dining hall they need to remind themselves that eating healthy is important.
Although the recession has hit the economy, people are now trying to save money by having “nights in”. This is an opportunity for business in the snack industry to take advantage of.
This year Millards South Student Council has decided to start our own student pantry. Our council really wanted to focus on a big project that would benefit our student body. Our administrative staff informed us that 27% of our student body needs financial assistance and qualifies for free and reduced lunch services. This number is significantly higher that our neighboring high school.Once we found this news out, our council knew that we wanted to relate our project to helping them. The first step we did was create a project proposed form and present it to our administrator to start the process of creating the pantry. We were approved and given a room in the school to use as our pantry. We did a lot of research and even visited ‘Ralston High
Students could leave campus, get food, and be back for time given from the school. If students could leave campus to get either a restaurant, get food at home or a fast food restaurant the food would be so much better than the schools food. Students could go to a small restaurant tor a diner. Students could go home and make their selves food. They could go to fast foods restaurants around the area such as McDonald’s, Hardee’s, or Subway. As long as students are back within the amount of time given students should be able to leave campus to get food. School lunches are not healthy for students most of the time. You do not know what the food they are serving you is half the time. If students were allowed to leave school for lunch it would give them a little bit of freedom for an hour. If they could leave campus for lunch it gives them a chance to have a break from their classes. Many students tend to fall asleep in class, if they could have an hour lunch break they could go home eat and rest for a little while. Students may feel trapped staying in one place for 8 hours. Many students also get bored sitting in classes for so long leaving for lunch give them the chance to move around and get out of
The University of a Florida offers meal plans for students who wish to have a meal ready for them rather than worrying about what they are going to eat, or perhaps cook, throughout the day. The problem with this idea however, is that students oftentimes do not take full advantage of this system. Whether it is cooking, eating out, or even going home on the weekends, there are several factors that can get in the way of taking full advantage of the meal plan. This dilemma often leaves families asking the same question: is buying the meal plan that is provided by colleges actually worth the money? While buying a meal plan for college appears to make sense for many incoming freshmen, it does not always translate into the most efficient use of
“The joy and satisfaction of a meal is equal to the passion and effort given its preparation.” Said by famous chef -Gordon Ramsay. Gordon Ramsay a known chef around the world loves to cook food for everyone, but some people don’t have the ability during the school day to buy a lunch. So, kids that are in school get hungry throughout the day and they only have one period dedicated to their food. I think that all schools should have vending machines all around the school and not just in the cafeteria, and open during the whole school day. Some kids in most schools have a reduced lunch or might not be able to buy a lunch at all. Students may have up to one dollar and that’s only enough for one item from the vending machines so they have to wait until their lunch period.
GCU should lower the prices of groceries in on-campus shops. This is the simplest and most direct way to solve the problem. However, if GCU is unwilling to comply with the students’ wishes to lower the prices, the university should provide a free shuttle service that takes students to a local grocery store on a weekly basis. This service should be available a few days during the week, such as Monday, Wednesday & Friday. There should be an available ride to the local store every two hours from noon to six p.m. This gives the shuttle time to drive there and back, while giving students around 45 minutes to complete their shopping. The students without cars have the opportunity to buy groceries at fair prices multiple times a week with free transportation, all before it becomes too late and possibly unsafe to be out around town. Although not all students have an outside source of income, this shuttle service will cut down on the number of students without cars who are unable to feed themselves due to inflated grocery prices, as well as those with cars who are unable
Food plays an important role in our lives, especially in college. Food affects people financially, nutritionally, and educationally. The dining halls at Virginia State University are a major source of meals and food for students. Needless to say, it is important that those students can eat at these dining halls. The problem with this is that the cost of campus dining is way too expensive for the limited options we have.
Students are surrounded by unhealthy food off or on campus. In a research done by nutritionists, they came to a conclusion that students without meal plans wasted more money on fast food and consumed more fast food (‘Cost and Calorie of Fast Food’). This was all due to convenience of the students without meal plans, since they cannot get into dining halls, and most do not have time to cook or do not know how to cook, therefore they turn to fast food for a quick meal. Due to the fact that there are plenty of fast food restaurants on or nearby mostly any university campus in America. Researchers in the Cost and Calorie of Fast Food also conducted that the average students waste $71 on fast food and consumed about 12,000 of fast food per month (pg.944). People may say that it is the students fault for not eating right or wasting money on fast food, but it’s actually the colleges that deicide what type of food to surround its students with. There is no escaping fast food on a college campus in
Food -- it is a necessity. There is not one person who does not think about it on a daily basis. For a college student, the quality of food available is not always to the highest of standards. Many students can not afford to buy expensive food or eat out on a regular basis. Many times their only option left is to eat from their school’s dining halls.
For many college students, dining halls and other dining facilities are essential because they provide daily nutrition. Campus dining feeds millions of students, and may even be the only meals that some students can get. College students spend thousands on meal plans every year, so when it comes to dining it is important that it is clean, sustainable and most importantly convenient. On campus dining services have failed at working around college student’s schedules. Most dining facilities close around the time of 9:30 p.m. or even earlier forcing students to seek alternative options that cause them to empty their pockets, and go off campus when unnecessary. College campuses should extend dining hours and require at least one dining hall to
This business plan is to open a door for young adults that want to learn a trade and earn their way in life. Not all high school aged students are eager to go onto a college or a university and this can be for many reasons: perhaps they are not ready to leave home; cannot afford; they are academically challenged; not sure what they want to major in; the list can go on and on. My wish for these young adults is for them to
Typical college students tend to procrastinate on their work. This leads to an “all-nighters” when students stay up the whole night to cram for an exam or finish writing an essay that is due the next morning. Most of the time, students get hungry during these all-nighters and stock up on unhealthy snacks like sodas and foods loaded with sugar to keep them awake through the night. With the dining halls so close to student housing, this makes stocking up on greasy, fried, and sugary food very convenient. The dining halls that provide these sugar-filled and greasy food gives students the wrong kind of energy. For real energy that keeps a student alert and focused, students should snack on fruits, whole grains, proteins, and carbohydrates. Eating foods like these will keep students awake and focus.
First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food. If you observed students buying lunch in the cafeteria, you don’t often see them buying these kinds, but not limited to, foodstuffs: burritos (which are just beans wrapped in tortillas), “burgers” (meat slapped on two
A food truck is like restaurant on wheels. It has several distinct advantages over a traditional eat-in restaurant. A food truck can go to where the customers are. It has pretty low overhead, compared to a restaurant, and requires far less staff. However a food truck is still a business that requires a lot of work and attention- especially in the first couple of years. Food truck owners put in long days and have similar problems as restaurant owners, such as slow seasons, bad weather, and sluggish economy. Read on to find out how you can start your own food truck business.
