One of the benefits of attending college later in life is having the life experience to know myself better than someone just graduating high school. At this point in my life I already know my skill level, strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the learning process for education and career planning.

There are many choices and paths to choose when the time comes to attend college however, a question to ask is, is it worth it? If decided to attend college, the following decision to be made revolves around an area of study one would like to pursue and the topic of study that will be available for them. Though many can further their education in different ways, a couple of ways consist of attending a four year college (private/ public) or a community college. Not going to college at all is the other alternative, but is it really a smart idea? Most adults have continuously told young students all through high school to attend college. A student’s chance of economic success in the future can be risen due to a college education. Judith Scott-Clayton, who is an assistant professor of economics and education at Teachers College at Columbia University states, “Individuals with bachelor’s degrees earn about 60 percent more than those with just a high school diploma, who in turn earn about 40 percent more than high school dropouts.” Students who seek higher education, are more likely to experience a better future and a better life. The cost of going to college may seem overwhelming at times however, the experiences and education obtained throughout college is priceless in regards to the way one interacts with others on a global basis, has a stronger job stability, and has better employment benefits.

According to Jenkins and Fink, the writers for the Community College Research Center, an average of 38% of community colleges students transfer to a 4 year college and 42% of the students complete a bachelor’s degree within the next 6 years. Going to a community college is very beneficial and affordable to children with high or low income. While I am taking Economics my teacher broke down the concepts and benefits of going to a community college versus a university. For example, going to Moraine Valley Community College is about $3,570 a year for their tuition, while the University of Illinois is around $15,686 in tution. If you go to Moraine Valley Community College for 2 years you will only be paying about $7,140 versus going to the University of Illinois for 2 years and paying $31,372 Your saving $24,232 dollars if you go to a 2 year college versus going the whole 4 years. If people are struggling financially this can be a financial advantage. Some junior colleges cost less than two-thousand dollars each semester for students who attend full time and it gives students some time to prepare for a 4 year university if they plan on taking their education further. Going to a community college helps students to set goals and aspects for their future career they want to pursue to transfer to a university. So why doesn’t Joliet West counselors promote the idea of going to a community college?

I often question myself, how and why did I join Richmond Early College High School (REaCH). REaCH is a program for high school students, which is located at at Richmond Community College (RCC). I am one of few teenagers that has the privilege to be accepted in this program. Many people have their own reasons for joining but I'm going to tell you a few of my own reasons for joining. I am here at RCC for the education, the availability of the campus, and the attitude of student.

In the last decade, students and parents alike have begun to question the effectiveness of receiving a college education. Stories of students graduating college with outstanding student loans, being unable to find a job, or feeling overqualified for a position continually increase. In the same manner, the number of students apprehensive about refraining from entering the workforce for an additional four years while simultaneously spending thousands of dollars for an education that in the end may not assure them a job with an adequate income, increases. The issue then is to determine whether or not the cost of college is worth the outcome.

Attending a community college usually makes people cringe. It is not the first pick of an average high school student. Community colleges are hardly ever advertised however, the traditional four-year schools are. Throughout all four years of high school the word university is drilled into student brains so exploring the idea of attending a community college does not stand a chance. The football and basketball teams, the sororities and fraternities, to having the bragging rights for attending a well-known university is what students imagine when going to college. Wake STEM Early College High School will be very beneficial to my high school and college experience. Being able to take college classes in high school is not only great as I will gain college credit in high school, but simply being accepted into this school looks great on a college resume for North Carolina State University, or any other college. I would love the environment of smart, friendly, hardworking people, where we could all help each other to receive the best education possible. This school will challenge my academic abilities, but also doesn’t compromise my ability to be in a sport. Wake STEM Early College High School will be one of the best schools to help me unlock the best and highest of my academic abilities.

You can use financial aid, federal grants, private student loans, college work study, and you can also even try to make a good score on your ACT so that you can have many colleges to choose from that will give you a scholarship. I will have multiple career options with this program, such as a veterinarian, an agriculture and food scientist, ​a zoologist-wildlife biologist, a veterinarian technician, and more (“Pre-Veterinary”). Once I begin studying and furthering my knowledge about animal sciences, I will choose my future career. With this degree, the courses I will focus on are biology, organic chemistry, animal physiology, exotic and domestic animals, cell biology, animal diseases, farm management and agriculture, animal genetics, nutrition and behavior (“Pre-Veterinary”). These courses will allow me to have a better understand about animals and help me pick a field of study that I want to go into. In order to prepare for these courses, I have taken 4 years of science classes including chemistry, physics, biology, and physical science. I have also broadened my experiences of working with animals by volunteering at The Human Society. However, I will be the first to admit that I did not do my best job at making sure I took as many science classes as possible. I did not take anatomy and physiology during school, but I believe this course along with many others will be better to take at The University of Findlay rather than at my school since the university has live animal facilities and allows more hands on experience.
