Year-round schooling is not effective and unworthy our time. Kids who are in the year-round schooling systems are slowly losing opportunities to be themselves. Likewise the students are being put in positions to fail and become less healthy. Although some may still believe that a year-round school calendar could benefit the majority of students, keeping the traditional summer calendar has many benefits including allowing time for families to plan vacations, decreasing the physical strain put on the students, staff, buildings, and developing healthier students. Vacation time is essential for family bonding and getting a break from the real world. Year round schooling does not allow for long, essential breaks. They will be replaced by short, frequent breaks that have no significance at all. Many people with more than one child may have children who attend different schools that varying breaks. Matthew Lynch, who has a doctoral degree in education states, “For parents with children of different ages and in different schools, a year-round schedule could present some serious scheduling issues,” (2). Scheduling is an essential component for the organization of families’ time and activities. Short breaks will not be able to account for family getaways that we all deserve. Year round schooling is better than regular school because, it allows the kids to retain more information and not lose what they learned, they also allow them to graduate earlier with higher retention levels. In discussion of Year Round Schooling, one controversial issue has been whether year round schooling is a good idea or not. People believe that year round schooling is a good thing and that it will increase academic achievement levels and benefit the students more than anything else. Students will also be able to advance more quickly since the schooling is year round, they have less to forget since the breaks are shorter. On the other hand people seem to believe that year round schooling takes away from the students and gives them less family time and less of an “Outside of school life” (NEA). In the research of year round schooling it shows that absences are most likely to be higher since it is year round. Their view is that we think that many students can benefit from year round schooling, and that is has more benefits than anything else.
Year round schooling may sound scary but read this and I might change your mind. Year round school is pretty much what is sounds like, except it is the same amount of school days as a regular year, and it has more spread out breaks. Year round school would be beneficial because it consist of less review due to “summer slide”, more “family time”, and longer more spread out breaks.

Year-round schooling is beneficial to many because it prevents students from gaining unwanted weight and causes less stress for teachers and students.
The first reason why kids should have a summer break is that it makes school less complicated. According to Jennifer Brozak, a disadvantage of having a year round school is that the school budget has to increase. They will need to have more fundraisers in order to keep the school going. If they neglect to get the amount of money they need they sometimes cancel and let the students have a summer break. In addition, teachers are having difficulty with planning lessons for students and grading papers in a short amount of time they have (Brozak). In addition, Brozak says, because of the short amount of time teachers have to grade papers they are prone to burnout. This is one of the reasons that schools should have a summer break because both teachers and students’ mental pressure because of work (Brozak). According to the National Association for Year-Round Education, students will be able to advance more rapidly if they did year-round schooling. A by-product of summer break is the dividing of classes based on age. If schooling was year-round, there would be less distinction between one year and the next. This only teaches us to work with people from our generation. If we had year-round schooling we could advance quicker and work with people from different generations, just like how it would be in the future with jobs. A traditional school in America has a 10-month school calendar, but, many are switching to the year-round calendar. Some are switching to maintain more consistent instruction. A few others are switching in order to save money(Grace Chen, July 2017, Public School Review). There are over 3,000 year-round schools in the United States today. Year-round schools first started in major cities or towns like, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Buffalo and Detroit. But, Los Angeles has the most year-round schools, over 500, in the nation. And there are only 10% of public school students who attend a year-round school. This can be beneficial for both teachers,students and even the families involved. The dropout rate is 2% lower than traditional schools( Niche ,2016). The absence rate is also lower, about 1% lower to be exact. This type of system can increase the school building capacity which means there’s no overcrowding. More education would be provided to lower income families or a child that is disabled. Studies also show that year-round schools have higher test scores than traditional schools. With students taking classes all year round they are constantly using their knowledge and adding on to it, making it awfully difficult to forget. LeighAnne Lyttle, a member of the U.S. Department of Education, states, “Data collected across the country has proven that year-round schools are the best way for children to get the most of their education providing better scores and learning habits than those of traditional schools. Traditional schools offer the most time off, but it is apparent in the grades of children and attitudes of teachers. More time off between semesters means more time reviewing and getting remedial students back into the swing of school. The best way to teach and to learn is to use a year-round calendar system that benefits students’ achievements and teachers’ motivation” (Lyttle) With the U.S. Department of Education having this information and studies to back it up they should be enforcing all public schools to switch over to year round schooling. Studies can be found though that prove there is no difference between the two types of systems, but this verdict is heavily outmatched and the studies also do not prove that traditional schooling is better. Just like schools with a traditional calendar, year-round school students attend 180 days of school. The only difference is is that year-round schools have a multi-track system that consists of four different tracks. The way this schedule works is that while one track is out of school for a fifteen day break, three other tracks are in school for 45 days. To start with, if schools offered year round school, the kids wouldn’t forget as much information over the big, long, and fun summer. For example, if you go to balanced school year, yes you would have to go to school earlier, but you won’t have to review all the boring stuff from the previous year. Year-Round Schools ROCK! ” Year-round schools is when they expand the 180 days into the entire year and take breaks in between. Neosho is currently doing a 10 month schedule and we have two months off for the summer. The Neosho school board is thinking about doing Year-Round School the Sophomores, Senior year. They are thinking about doing where we go to school for 45 days and 15 day off or 60 days in school than 20 days off. During the break, we can rest our brains. Vacations with the whole family can be a blast! But year-round school can take that away. Although year-round school can help students stay focused on what they are learning in school it is destroying the time that kids spend on sports and vacations with their family.
Did you know that there is a three percent decrease in dropout rates in year-round schools? This could be very beneficial to students who might consider dropping out of highschool.
