Some say you’re born into it, others say you pick it up as a hobby. I for one believe I was born into it. Being a third generation farming family definitely had a role in raising market show pigs. Raising show pigs is and has always been a blessing for many families. You don’t have to be born in the heart of Oklahoma to raise a Grand Champion market pig. Having the correct knowledge about the industry, feeding regiment, and the proper showman etiquette will help a person greatly.
Before you make the decision to purchase a market pig at a barn sale or online auction you should have the correct knowledge of the breeds that are out there. There are a total of eight common breeds of show pigs. These eight breeds can be divided into two groups

Berkshire hogs are known for their ability to easily gain weight; they also have traits like black and white hair. The white hair they have on their bodies must be on their ears, tail, and feet. Another pig breed that is black and white is the Hampshire. Hamps are heavy muscled but they can also pack on a lot of weight. They are black with a white belt that goes around their body and the two front feet must also be white. Hampshire pigs can also be off belts where they do not have a full belt around their body; they may just have one leg that is white with the rest of the body black. The last and most recorded breed of pigs in the United States is the Yorkshire. Yorks are most famous for their outstanding mothering abilities; they are able to produce a large amount of milk and have structural soundness. A York cannot be any other color than white or if it they have any extra dewclaws, which we can think of as toes, on the back of their feet.
After deciding on the breed or cross that you want to buy, you need to look at the most important aspect of a pig; their bonestructure. You can easily feed out a problem like weight or muscle but if a pig is straight legged as a baby then the problem will only progress. A pig should have a straight, or level, back and also should have a natural ability to keep their head up. Once you have the right structure you need to find a pig with an adequate amount of bone so their legs aren’t
Have you ever wanted a pet that was intelligent, adorable, affordable, and healthy? They are pigs! One reason, their food is
When the pigs gain power they start to organize committees throughout the farm. They also position the animals for labor work and basically act as a congress. This allows them to be passive making others do all of the work. They have a wide variety of knowledge to brainwash the animals into thinking the
Although there is a lot that goes into showing and raising livestock, specifically show pigs, it is one of the most fun experiences that a person could have! When you think of raising pigs, most people wouldn’t think about all of the time, money, and equipment that are needed for this project, but in the end, all of that will pay off. Before deciding to join the “show pig world”, you should consider picking out that perfect hog, taking proper care of your pig, and showing your pig properly at the county fair or jackpot show!
Today's competitions heifers and steers are specifically bred for shows. More than likely they are from breeders of club cattle. There is obviously a huge difference in club calves and commercial cattle. We are trying to put basically most of the traits you need in good commercial cattle, but then you add a little show ring pizzazz in them. They need that extra balance, quality, and eye appeal. “The difference is the hair and muscle they have in them,” said Jerry Riley of JDR cattle. “For breeding purposes I am going after that hair, that muscle, that bone that it takes to be a club calve compared to just a commercial cow. Mark Beauprez of Beauprez cattle stated, “There is a lot more of a show cattle look to these cattle.” “The lines are a lot straighter and they are prettier fronted, bigger boned, and a lot thicker of an animal”
The procedure consisted of external anatomy. We were asked to exam several characteristics of the unborn pig which includes: determining the age of the fetus by measuring the body length from its snout to the rump, examine the amount of hair on body, examine the lips, nostrils, ears, eyes, feet, chest, stomach, nipples and sexual organs. The procedure also consisted of internal anatomy which includes the oral cavity, digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system and urogenital system.
We haven’t always endured the dramatic effect of these ghastly creatures. Around three hundred years ago the Spaniards, during their explorations introduced the hogs to Texas. The hogs were intended for sustenance and lard for the new settlers here in America. During the fight for Texas’s independence the hogs were left unattended and managed to escape their encasements. That being said, the hogs began reproducing at an alarming rate; now the feral hog

Pigs are one of the most similar animals to humans, and can be analyzed to learn about the organ systems of the body. Both pigs and humans are mammals, omnivores, furless and featherless, and their fetuses receive nutrients from their mothers through the umbilical cord as they develop (Field). These
Feral pigs restrict their activities to cool parts of the day such as dusk and dawn. Throughout hot weather, pigs become primarily nocturnal, and in cooler weather the inactivity is generally throughout the middle of the day. Feral pigs create and use trails to easily travel to and from places such
“I have raised 13 breed or reserve breed champions at major livestock shows in Texas as well as dozens of placing cattle,” Greg said. “I have also sold bulls that have sired two champions and many placing steers.”
The potbellied pig’s diet is very extremely important. By the age of 14 weeks he/she should be ready for real food. They need minerals in their diet, this is very important. (Iron, copper, calcium, iodine, potassium, manganese), they need their mini pig pellets; the proper measurements are on the bag. Now their natural foods, there are quite a few. (Carrots, spinach, soybeans, beet tops, dried lentils, unripe peas, kidney beans, broccoli, celery dried potatoes, apples, grapes, apricots, cherry, plum, bananas, Oatmeal is one of their favorites, toast or baked a bread). Showing steers is not as easy as some may think. You now see that there are many steps in preparing a show steer. Although, cattle aren’t easy to maintain they teach you responsibility and allow you to love them just as you love any other pet. Cattle have made a lasting impact in my life and I hope that they can make a lasting impact in yours as well.
For the past 9 years I have shown 15 market lambs, a pig, and multiple heifers all at the Racine County Fair. Just last year I won grand champion carcass lamb on a 103 pound lamb. I want to show breeding stock sheep. In the future I want to show breeding stock at the Wisconsin State Fair and/or market lamb. I also want to buy a purebred, registered Suffolk ewe(s) and a purebred Targhee ram. I think that it would be nice to raise a different breed of sheep to have and show, because I could broaden my horizons on raising sheep by receiving and having better ewes to
One of the main reasons why the pigs were able to stay in control is because the animals were easily brainwashed into supporting and believing that whatever the pigs say is right. The pigs were able to control the animals like this through the use of propaganda, they used many forms of propaganda and controlled the animals very strategically. When the other animals notice that the pigs took all the milk and apples Squealer said, “ Comrades!" he cried. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples … It is for YOUR sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples ” ( Orwell-14). It is seen how squealer bends the truth in this excerpt to make it seem like the pigs are doing this for the good of the animals, but they are actually doing this out of greed for more food and power. The pigs often use different propaganda techniques to encourage the animals to keep working and supporting the pigs. Squealer once stated that “ production of every class of foodstuff had increased by two hundred per cent, three hundred per cent, or five hundred per cent, as the case might
Mother pigs spend most of their miserable lives in tiny gestation and farrowing crates so small that they can’t even turn around and forced to get pregnant over and over again, until their bodies can’t handle it anymore.. Males are either killed immediately, or castrated at a young age then kept only for their meat. Piglets, in general, are torn away from their mothers after only a few weeks, tails are chopped off, and the ends of their teeth are snipped off, then the spend days to weeks to months in cramped, crowded pens on slabs of filthy concrete until it gets decided what will happen to them.
