Gun Control In America Every time a gun injures or kills in self defense it is used seven times in a criminal assault or homicide; furthermore the main argument against stricter gun laws is the fact that they are needed for self defense. Gun control is a very controversial and debatable topic, and many people have different opinions. In the Constitution, The Second Amendment gives the right to bear arms, but there have been restrictions on certain firearms since the Constitution was ratified. Still, gun violence continues to increase in America. On July 20, 2012, James Holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 during a playing of the film The Dark Night Rises in a theater in Aurora, Colorado. He used multiple guns including assault rifles and shotguns, tear gas, and various explosives. On December 14, 2012, Adam Lorenza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in NewTown, Connecticut, and fatally shot 20 kids and six adult staff members. He used a semi-automatic rifle and was carrying extra magazines. On September 16, 2013, Alexis Hood fatally shot 12 men on a naval base in Washington, D.C. These three mass shootings happened in a time span of just over a year. If it is this easy for people to kill a dozen or more innocent people in America, something clearly has to change. The first reason why gun laws should be stricter in America is stricter gun laws will save lives. In 2010, 31,076 people died from gun violence in America, that is 85 people every day and three people every hour. There were also 73,505 people in emergency care because of non-fatal gun wounds in 2010. People often call the Vietnam War one of the biggest wastes of life in history, but more deaths occur in two years from gun violence in America than in all 20 years of the Vietnam War. Stricter gun laws would make it harder for people to access the guns that caused all of this death, and greatly decrease the number of deaths that gun violence cause. (Agretsi
