In Literature there has been many types of heroes but the type of hero that stands out the most is an epic hero. People in todays culture must wonder “what is an epic hero?” well an epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic poem. The two most famous epic heroes in literature are Beowulf from the epic poem “Beowulf” written by the Anglo-Saxons and Achilles from the epic poem “The Iliad” written by Homer. Beowulf was a noble and brave warrior who defeated many gruesome monsters and was king of the Geats and Achilles was a skilled Greek soldier and also known as the invincible warrior. Beowulf and Achilles were epic heroes that have many differences as well as similarities. The differences and similarities are that both are epic heroes, Beowulf is …show more content…
In the epic poem “Beowulf” the quote “that I, alone and with my men/ may purge all evil” (lines 165-166) shows that epic heroes must be courageous and be willing to take on evil at any cost. Achilles and Beowulf shows these traits the most making them the most recognizable epic heroes in literature. Even though these two were in different eras, the qualities of an epic hero never changes. Out of the two epic heroes, Beowulf and Achilles, Beowulf is the more stronger of the two. The quote from “Beowulf” to back up my reasoning is “Strongest of the Geats-greater/ and stronger than anyone in this world” (Lines 110-111). This quote shows that Beowulf is the strongest man in the world and nothing can defeat him. Beowulf fought with his bare hands while Achilles fought with a weapon. Beowulf's strength shows that he is stronger and the better epic hero.
The epic poems “Beowulf” and the “Iliad” were written in different eras and in different settings. For “Beowulf” “the epic poem describes events that take place in scandinavia around the 500s A.D.” (Page 36 Lines 36-37) and “The Iliad” “took place between Greece and
1000 years have past since our ancestors started writing about our heroes and we have changed since then, or have we?We may have technological advancements, but the similarities are clear. You can pick any modern movie and compare the hero to heroes from epics, for example, Beowulf and Luke Skywalker. Though the time and culture have changed, the societal values haven’t. Let’s start with Luke Skywalker. He has many attributes that help him during his fights.
The first way in which both characters are similar is in the fact that they both travel from great distances to take part in a battle against some evil. In the medieval Germanic epic, Beowulf leaves his people the Geats of Scandinavia to help Hrothgar, the king of the Danish people, to kill Grendel, a monster who attacks the king's hall and devours the king's men. Beowulf slays Grendel but then must challenge Grendel's mother in order to restore Hrothgar's kingdom to safety. Likewise, Achilles joins the other Greeks and travels to Troy to do battle against Paris, Hector and the other Trojans for having abducted Helen, the wife of Menelaus. Achilles performs many heroic deeds on the battleground and adds renown to his name among the Greeks.
These two characters made incredible actions that influenced that their names were remember for a long time; Beowulf looks like any other warrior, he followed the code of a great warrior and also the code of the heroes, things that just a few people used to do but Beowulf had and special kind to be he was arrogant because he know the strong that he had and he did crazy things that always at the final those actions looks very intelligent for example when he fought with grandal, he decided to fight without armor because he wanted a right fight without to have advantage everybody thought that he was crazy but at the final they saw that it was very intelligent because grendel was immune to weapons so he only could be affected by normal hits like punch or kicks that was what Beowulf did. Achilles had a unique kind to be it was similar to the kind to be of Beowulf but it was not equal; Achilles was arrogant too but the difference between Beowulf and Achilles was that Achilles was more arrogant and he never did things that will not benefit to him in something.
Beowulf and Achilles were different in a few ways. Beowulf was cocky by assuming that he could come to Herot and kill Grendel easily. However, Achilles was humble and understood that he will die in battle. Another different characteristic would be how Beowulf demonstrates superhuman strength by attacking Grendel with only his fists. On the other hand, Achilles doesn’t have superhuman strength, but he is skilled in using weapons. Both heroes are different, so naturally there is one that would be considered the
Beowulf is a great example of an epic hero. He has all of the qualities and characteristics of an epic hero. He is brave, strong, glorified and smart. He proves that he has all of these traits throughout the story by battling his enemies, proving his strength and continuing to be glorified throughout the story. .A hero is a person with qualities that go beyond what a normal person has who goes against adversity to fight for and protect
Beowulf is a story about a man named Beowulf who desired fame and fortune in life. The Iliad had a character named Achilles who is similar to Beowulf because he also desired glory. But they are two completely different stories written at different times and different places by different people. Both stories have unique qualities such as dragons in one and multi-gods in the other and that is what makes fictitious stories like these classics. Since achieving fame is a goal of these two characters, and since these are great works of literature, people can relate to wanting to be famous in life. So this essay is about Beowulf and Achilles and what they went through to be famous and also what they went through to
Clifford DeMond Mrs. DeSilva English 22 September 2015 Epic Hero’s: Beowulf and Achilles Stories of epic heroes have been passed down through time. Two of those epic heroes are Beowulf and Achilles. They both came from different cultures and fought in different ways. Beowulf wouldn’t always use his sword to fight if his opponents were unarmed He would fight unarmed.
Every epic hero possesses certain heroic characteristics. The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. Beowulf is the hero. He shows that he is a great man by always putting other things before his own needs. He is important and needed by his people and is known by many as a strong, courageous and a helpful person. He shows all of the qualities and traits that a true hero possesses.
Beowulf is an epic hero who symbolizes the perfect qualities in the Anglo-Saxon society. These qualities all get together to make up an epic story. He has the ideals, attributes and convictions that were regarded in the Anglo-Saxon society. Beowulf shows these ethics in his own particular words and behavior during distinctive circumstances all through the story. Beowulf was considered "the strongest of the Geats" furthermore "greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world".
Both are wonderful examples of an epic poem. But I believe that Beowulf is a better hero than Achilles because, He only fought monsters, he wasn’t bent on revenge and he also did everything to his own accord. His mother, Thetis, dipped Achilles as a child in the river Styx. Which made him invincible except for a small spot on his heel that his mother used to keep hold of him so he wouldn’t be washed away by the river. He was also a demigod he was half human half god, which made him pretty tough to begin with.
Ancient epic heroes have lasted many years and throughout many different cultures. They are common even in today’s age. These heroes have had an impact on how characters in a movie or comic book are portrayed. Beowulf, for example, is an epic hero that is still discussed to this day by english teachers all around the country. Beowulf is a strong and mighty warrior who is brave throughout the epic Beowulf.
Beowulf and Achilles are similar because they both win their battles and are very humble about it. Beowulf defeats Grendel and rips his arm off to hang as a trophy of the fight. Achilles slays Hector and denies the request to return his body to his family. They are also similar
Beowulf and Achilles were both good warriors and won many battles. They were also both leaders of their kingdoms or tribes. They were both half man and half god so they were very strong. Achilles liked to show off and get more praise for what he did but Beowulf was more humble than Achilles. Achilles was driven by his emotions and did what his mind told him to do before thinking about it first. Both of them would take their enemy's body or a body part and hang it up or display it as a trophy for winning the battle.
In today’s society, a hero is viewed as someone who embodies the characteristics of selflessness, courage, honesty, and integrity. The same characteristics were essential to be thought of as a hero 3,000 years ago as well. Two of the most widely known epic poems of their time were Beowulf and The Epic of Gilgamesh. Both Beowulf and Gilgamesh embody traits known exclusively of a hero. The poem of Beowulf and The Epic Gilgamesh both showcase the characteristics required of being an epic, in that they include a hero on a quest performing valorous deeds in an elevated style, while being protected by supernatural forces.
In reading The Iliad and Beowulf, one can conclude they are both literary works based on war and heroism. The hero in the Iliad is Achilles, who is from Greece and is the Archaen army’s greatest warrior in the battle of the Trojan war. Beowulf, a Geatish warrior has come to help the Danes in their long fight against Grendel, showing his heroism. Both characters Achilles and Beowulf share some similar traits such as their thirst for glory, their abnormal strength, and their courage. The characters also display several differences among each other as in they are not from the same cultures, Beowulf is more selfless than Achilles, and Achilles fights humans instead of mythical creatures such as Beowulf does. In medieval literature and todays literature, heroism is important simply because it gives people hope and inspires them. As stated before, Achilles and Beowulf were both thirsty for glory and I think that trait is still present in today’s time which cannot always be positive. Also, in todays time it is not the term hero that has changed. It is we who have changed. For most people, the media, pop culture, and events in society change our perception of a hero.
