In Literature there has been many types of heroes but the type of hero that stands out the most is an epic hero. People in todays culture must wonder “what is an epic hero?” well an epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic poem. The two most famous epic heroes in literature are Beowulf from the epic poem “Beowulf” written by the Anglo-Saxons and Achilles from the epic poem “The Iliad” written by Homer. Beowulf was a noble and brave warrior who defeated many gruesome monsters and was king of the Geats and Achilles was a skilled Greek soldier and also known as the invincible warrior. In the epic poem “Beowulf” the quote “that I, alone and with my men/ may purge all evil” (lines 165-166) shows that epic heroes must be courageous and be willing to take on evil at any cost. Achilles and Beowulf shows these traits the most making them the most recognizable epic heroes in literature. Even though these two were in different eras, the qualities of an epic hero never changes. Out of the two epic heroes, Beowulf and Achilles, Beowulf is the more stronger of the two. The quote from “Beowulf” to back up my reasoning is “Strongest of the Geats-greater/ and stronger than anyone in this world” (Lines 110-111). This quote shows that Beowulf is the strongest man in the world and nothing can defeat him. Beowulf fought with his bare hands while Achilles fought with a weapon. Beowulf's strength shows that he is stronger and the better epic hero.
