The Initiation is the second stage in The Hero’s Journey. The Belly of the Whale, which usually occurs during the hero’s departure, happens much later in both Beowulf and Spider-Man. In Beowulf, that part is represented in the scene when he is in the lake fighting Grendel’s mother. “Squatting with her weight on his stomach, [Grendel’s Mother] drew / a dagger, brown with dried blood, and prepared / to avenge her only son. But [Beowulf] was stretched / on his back, and her stabbing blade was blunted / by the woven mail shirt he wore on his chest. / The hammered links held; the point / could not touch him” (lines 502-507). For Spider-Man, this is when he is fighting his final battle with the Green Goblin. Peter is getting beat to a pulp by …show more content…
After the Initiation there is The Return, which contains many different types of returns. The Magic Flight of Beowulf is when he dies and gives his kingdom to Wiglaf and the others. In Spider-Man, The Magic Flight is the testing of Peter’s abilities in his final battle with the Green Goblin. When he discovers that the Goblin is Harry’s dad, Peter realizes he can’t kill him. Additionally, there is The Crossing of the Return Threshold which, for Beowulf, is represented by the return home after defeating Grendel’s mother, and remaining safely at home for fifty years. Contrastingly, Peter’s Crossing of the Return Threshold lasts for only a few minutes. Peter is at Mr. Osborn’s funeral and seems, for the time being, safe and ordinary while talking to MJ and Harry. With a hero’s return there is almost always a way they become a Master of Two Worlds. For Beowulf, that is when he returns from his fifty year rest to Herot to fight the dragon. Obviously, for Peter this is his ability to be Peter Parker, an ordinary young adult, and then become Spider-Man, saving the city from evil. Finally, the last type of return of a hero is The Freedom to Live. Even though he dies, Beowulf “lives on” through the tower he ordered people to build in his honor. This tower reminds passers-by of his greatness and heroic deeds. In Spider-Man, Peter’s Freedom to Live is when he defeats the Goblin (though, in the process, he kills Mr. Osborn). Peter Parker has gained the wisdom it requires to
Beowulf is tested when Grendel’s mother retaliates to her son’s death. She lashes out and kills Hrothgar’s best man. Then, Beowulf goes down into her cave where he duels her. He nearly loses his life when both his sword and armor fail him. “No sword could slice her evil skin , that Hrunting could not hurt her, was useless now when he needed it.” (1521-24) He took a magical sword that was hanging on her wall and killed her with it. Beowulf’s helpers in this stage would be the sword and God. Without the sword he would not have been to kill Grendel’s mother. Beowulf relies on God’s help and often gives Him thanks after a battle is over. The next stage in his journey is the climax or final battle. After defeating Grendel’s mother, Beowulf returns to his hometown where he reigns as king for fifty years. He is a good king, keeping peace in his country. After fifty years of peace, a fire-breathing dragon is awoken, so he must go protect his people. Beowulf and his warriors venture out to the dragon’s lair. He goes in alone, confident that he can defeat the beast. He is sadly mistaken; Beowulf’s armor starts to melt and his sword breaks against the dragon‘s scaly back. He was left there to die when all of his fellow warriors ran away cowardly into the woods. Only one brave soldier remained: Wiglaf. The final stage in initiation is the hero’s flight. This story’s flight is Wiglaf saving Beowulf.
Being a hero can be defined many different ways. Several qualities like courage, respect, and strength can define heroism. A hero is noted for his or her actions for being brave, powerful, and acting with honor. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows all of these characteristics by defending the Danish king, Hrothgar, and his people. He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power and strength to protect others. Beowulf embodies the qualities of bravery, being powerful, and demonstrating his honor; therefore, he can be considered a true hero.
The late actor, Christopher Reeve, once stated, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” In the epic, Odyssey, by Homer and the film, Spiderman, directed by Sam Raimi, the crux of the storyline relates to a hero and the challenges they face along the way. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is the main character. The epic tale outlines his travels as he attempts to travel back to his home against the will of some gods. In Spiderman, Peter Parker is the main character. He undergoes a transformation from a human to spider-like characteristics and abilities. Peter Parker devotes his life to saving others who are in need. Although
Both Beowulf and Spiderman are commonly known as heroes that go through the literary hero's journey. Anglo-Saxon epic heroes are willing to put their own lives in danger for the greater good providing people with a sense of security. Beowulf, a brave, courageous, and noble conqueror, has his journey begin with his “call to adventure” as the kingdom of King Hrothgar needs Beowulf 's help in Denmark because the monster, Grendel, is killing everyone. Normally there is a refusal to call. However, Beowulf is so confident in himself that he is willing to immediately begin gathering his men to leave for Denmark. On the other hand, Spiderman starts as a nerdy, high school kid, Peter Parker. He is an orphan with an unhappy life. Peter's “call to adventure” is when he is bitten by a radioactive spider while attending a school field trip to an experimental lab. Peter later goes home feeling under the weather when he notices he has the abilities and proportionate strength of a spider. Peter does not understand what the “call” is at this stage nor how he can help people. Instead of
Spiderman have journey too because is a hero because he have people you like him and people who doesn’t like him.
To start out we will talk about Spider Man. A struggling teenager who had been bite by a radioactive spider. He was so shocked and surprised as well as flabbergasted. When his uncle ben was killed by a burglar which peter accepts responsibility for him dying cause he would of never been there if it was not for him wanting to go to that fight. So he took personal responsibility and train using his newfound powers vowing to put Cash Register Thief (later known as sandman) behind bars like he should of in the first place when peter saw him robbing the convenience store. He struggles through trying to find him but his self-efficacy helps him through life because he believes
“Spider-Man!” Hearing his alias being called and feeling his web tug on, Peter look and what he sees surprises him. Hawkeye and Wanda the Scarlet Witch are at the observation deck on the 86th floor, right where the satellite dish is. That tugging turn out to be them removing his web from the dish and are now trying to pull him up. “Just hang on, we gotcha!”
In the Spectacular Spider-Man, the episode Group Therapy show started out with the villains trying to escape from prison and planning to take down Spider-Man. Peter who is Spider-Man is wearing a black spider suit rather than his regular red spider suit to fight off the vicious villains. The black spider suit has taken over his body and had fought with the villains the night before. When he wakes up in the morning he felt his whole body aching but cannot remember why. Upon from waking up, he read on the morning news paper that Spider-Man has taken down the villain last night. Even though he was the one fighting the villain he has no memory of the fight. The episode end when one of Peter’s co-workers knocks at his door and let him knows that his Grandma May is in the hospital because of a heart attack.
Spiderman starts off in New York. Peter Parker is a character who lives with his aunt and uncle. He works as a pizza delivery boy. Everything is completely normal until he gets bit by a radioactive spider. He gains superpowers that turn him into a human spider.
The hero must be provided with a great amount of power to be put into consideration for a tragic hero, and like miller explains not remaining passive to the challenges leading forward then create a hero 's determination. In brief, the start of Beowulf 's downfall begins with his pedestal of power and his ignorance to how much this power is overcoming.
In comic book origin stories, there is a common theme – a sort of call to action. Usually, the hero has lost something close to them that causes them to don their costume and protect the world from something like that happening again. For Superman, his planet was destroyed. For Batman, his parents were taken from him when a robbery went bad. For Spider-Man, a burglar killed his Uncle Ben. As a teenager, this could have led Peter Parker down a road of crime and sorrow, but instead, he chose to listen to his uncle’s last words, “with great power comes great responsibility.” And ever since his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, the web-slinger has had the responsibility of protecting New York City.
Spider-man is a well-loved superhero that has filled the childhood of many young men and women. Most people are familiar with his story; a nerdy boy who gets bit by a radioactive spider and becomes a superhero. Initially he begins his work wanting to help people, but as the story progresses he begins looking for suites that will make him stronger and faster. This is when he finds the “Venom” costume. Unfortunately, the costume has a mind of its own, and it slowly corrupts Peter Parkers mind and makes him into what he never wanted to be in the first place. The more power Peter Parker had, the more focused on himself he became and the less able to be the superhero he had set out to be. This is a common theme throughout history; the second a person takes their eyes off of the people they are leading and focuses instead on being faster and stronger, is the second that they fail as a leader. Pope Saint John Paul the Great is a wonderful example of what leadership aught to look like—an example of loving and putting others first, and ultimately leading them closer to Christ.
With Tom Holland’s Spider-Man completely skipping the origin story and starting off directly in college with complete control of his powers, Marvel might be making the decision to introduce the origin of the character to younger viewers through the animated series rather than commit to making a hit or miss origin story movie that older viewers have already seen twice in theaters and are usually already familiar with from their own Marvel animated series
Peter sat on the edge of a giant steel strut jutting out of what used to be the uppermost wall of Avengers’ Tower. He stared down at his hand, where the thumb and palm met, at the faint dual red triangles that were the residual marks from the fangs of the radioactive spider that had bit him eight months ago. He thought about how his life had changed since that fateful day at Stark Laboratories, when he knocked over the vial containing the experimental arachnid. His red-gloved hand rubbed his neck, and winced when his fingers touched the scabbed-over wound where the Vulture’s mechanical wing had hit him. He remembered Liz, and thought how different his life would have been had he never become the amazing, spectacular Spider-Man.
First and foremost, the hero Spider-Man starts with the creative ideas that Stan Lee develops in 1962. Chaston asserts that “Stan Lee is the best-known costumed superhero of the Marvel Comics universe and the star of several comic books and television series.” In a Time.com website, “How Spider-Man Was Born”, the author, Nolan Feeney states that one day, Lee’s publisher tells him he must come up with a new superhero idea. That day, Lee goes home and starts thinking about what a new hero would be like. He sees a fly climbing on the wall, so he comes up with an idea that a new hero should be able to climb walls. He starts to randomly call out the new hero’s name, Fly-Man, Insect-Man, and Mosquito-Man; however, he doesn’t
