Beowulf is an epic story written in the English language. Originally only spoken not written. The story is about Beowulf accepting a quest to defend Herot from Monsters for the treasure and fame. Beowulf is our main character in this epic story who has the strength of 30 thanes and is the bravest around. As Beowulf sets out for this journey his partner Wiglaf and his men are there to help him throughout the journey. As Beowulf begins his Journey he sails from his home “Geatsland” to Hrothgar, during this sail his ship gets destroyed and ends up swimming the rest of the way with Wiglaf while having to fight sea monsters off. Soon after they reach Heorot for the next obstacle which is defeating Grendel. Grendel breaks through the doors at night …show more content…
I mean it fits up with my liking. But Hollywood made this more complex so it could appease our modern day audience, that’s why there’s that little love story between Wealtheow and Beowulf, that gives the story sex appeal. Also it makes references about God/Christianity which is favored by the bad guy in this story, Unferth. It gave more personal relationships to give off that motivation in the behavior of the characters. Hollywood used our modern language like slang instead of ornate language. The move was pretty 3 dimensional and not really flat with the good vs. evil plot. All around it was just more appealing to the audiences. There was a lot of differences between the movie and the book. For example in the book Grendel slays the Danes in the night while they are sleeping but in the movie the Danes are awake and witness his killing. Another is when Beowulf rips off Grendel's arm with his bare hands in the book but in the movie Beowulf uses a chain and as Grendel tries to flee, Beowulf slams the door severing his arm. Another good example would be when Beowulf brings back head of Grendel and hilt form the giants sword back from the book, while in the movie Grendel’s mother took her son’s head off that becomes the only token that Beowulf brings back from the movie. Some others would be Beowulf rules in Sweden from the book but in the movie he ends up just staying with the Danes. Or how in the book Grendel’s mother is a monster and dies but in the movie Grendel’s mom is a beautiful shape shifter and hooks up with Beowulf and Hrothgar. There’s more differences from the book and movie but just to show how Hollywood changed it up alittle to make more of a dramatic film for the
For instance, Flora made the book feel sweet and nice as you read it but in the movie Crow played that part in the movie. But since there wasn’t as many characters the pairs were also switched up. For me, it made things more confusing at the beginning to understand the plot but as the movie went on eventually I figured out that the characters who I know and love were not there.
One major difference between the text and the movie is the characters. One of the characters that seem to differ quite a bit between the movie and the book is Beowulf. Everyone think of him as the hero that killed the monsters they were terrified of and probably would never think of a “hero” as a liar. In the book it never says anything about him lying about killing Grendel’s mother as it shows in the movie; according to the text “struck it with all the strength he had left, caught her in the neck and cut it through, broke bones and all. Her body fell to the floor…”(521). Another character in Beowulf that differs is Grendel, in the movie Grendel seemed to be able to communicate with the other
The first difference I notice is in the book women are very disrespected with not having very many rights, while in the movie women are in the Mead Hall with the men partying not much in the kitchen like the book portrayed, that’s the very first thing I see. Also now in the book Beowulf rips Grendle’s arm off for his death but in the movie Beowulf grapples Grendel, who has a chain wrapped around his arm, pulling it loose. As Grendel is trying to flee Heorot, Beowulf slams the door on his arm, severing it. Also in the book Grendle’s mother goes to avenge them but in the movie his mother visits Beowulf as he is asleep with all the other villagers and she visits him in his dreams and awakens to see she has killed many men of the Herot. Also in the book the mother’s lair is guarded in the movie it’s deserted. After slaying Grendel's mother, Beowulf brings Hrunting, Grendel's head and the hilt from the giant's sword back to Heorot in the book where in the movie she brings the head to
Even though there are a lot of differences they also had a few similarities. One of them was the point that in the poem and movie Beowulf or Buliwulf died and they died as a king. They were similar to some of the characters, battles, events, and the terminations. The battle events of Beowulf and 13th Warrior are comparable. In both Beowulf and his followers seek for an entrance into the monster’s home to kill the mother and Wendol or Grendol seek for Buliwylf location as well. They both ended with Wendol and his mother dyeing. In conclusion Buliwylf or Beowulf died as a king.
In the beginning of the story the plot stays the same for the most part... other than Beowulf being motivated by other things than glory or pride. When Grendel is killed in the movie they introduce his mother, they don't show her face but they hint to her being very seductive by the way she talks. Grendel’s mom doesn't really seek revenge in the movie but Hrothgar asks Beowulf to kill her because of a prior incident (Grendel is actually Hrothgar's son) with Grendel’s mom. Beowulf obliges and goes to kill G’s mom but when he enter her den he is almost instantly taken away by her beauty, this causes Beowulf to have a lapse in judgement and impregnate G’s mom. This is very different from the book because in the book he kills G’s mom in a battle to the death then cuts the head off of Grendel’s dead body as illustrated “Armless, exactly as that fierce fighter had sent him out from Herot, then struck off His head with a single swift blow”(542). Also after Beowulf was seduced he goes back to Hrothgar and lies to him and the Danes saying that he has killed Grendel’s mother. This is the major plot difference in the movie and the book.
The locations in the epic poem and the movie seem similar but the more that I thought about it and analyze both of the sources they are very different. The biggest difference I noticed is the amount of battles. Beowulf contained three battles,
Comparing the book and the movie of Beowulf, you find mostly differences. The amount of similarities between them are actually very slim. Either ranging from what is said or changing scenes completely altogether, they’re both very different from each other. Having said that, the differences need to be stated and reviewed. We will begin with the first scene in which the king is being merry and Grendel attacks the hall.
The narrative and the film have dissimilarities in terms of their characters. In the story “Beowulf: A
A prolific and boastful hero prince who goes on many breathtaking and daring adventures that would, later on, come back to bite him in the end. This heroic tale was greatly known as “Beowulf”. Which was written around the 8th through the 11th century by an Anglo-Saxon poet. The intended audience for this story were the soldiers that followed Beowulf into battle, to instill confidence and bravery or the soldiers from other countries that were in conflict with or against Beowulf, to instill fear in the soldiers. The Beowulf tale was an oral tradition told by poets or bards before and after battles; while the warriors drank, ate, and sang. Beowulf is about a warrior prince coming to the aid of King Hrothgar of Denmark who is tormented by a demon
Whether you are arguing with your siblings, with a stranger at a baseball game, during a debate, with your parents or children, you are fighting for what you believe is right. You perceive yourself as the “victim” in the situation by trying to justify your reasoning behind the argument. Some people may perceive you as the good or as the evil because they believe that you have done nothing wrong, you were being perverse or fighting for the wrong reason. The epic poem Beowulf, is a super-eminent literary example that represents the good and evil in the characters and what they are fighting for. In this fictional poem, in which the author is unknown, the protagonist Beowulf encounters three major battles with a monster named Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and a dragon. Each character is fighting for a certain reason and believe their reason is more dominant. The two audiences that view the characters as good or evil is the Danes and the narrator. Since the characters in the poem believe they're justified in their actions, they prove to not be all evil or all good. In fact, they should be judged based on the rationale behind their actions to fight.
The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. The hero, Beowulf, is a seemingly invincible person with all the extraordinary traits required of an Anglo Saxon hero. He is able to use his super-human physical strength and courage to put his people before himself. He encounters many monsters and horrible beasts, but he never fears the threat of death. His leadership skills are outstanding and he is even able to boast about all his achievements. Beowulf is the ultimate epic hero who risks his life countless times for glory which to him meant eternal life.
Have you ever been inside a real man’s home? There are no pizza boxes sitting around, there are no undershirts on the floor, and there sure arent any unpaid bills being used as beer coasters. No one can master his professional or personal life if he isn’t already the master of his own home; meaning the term lazy doesn't exist (Am i a man article sec 2 ) . The word can't is one that will never be used. Waiting for the next blessing to be handed to him will never happen because a real man believes in working for everything that he owns or set his mind to own in his near or prolonged future. Being satisfied with just money isn't on his mind because he truly know that it's more to life than just money. If luck is sent his way he will then feel
Beowulf is an epic story that relates well to the time that it was introduced by having the stories of the epic battles and the defeats of the treacherous monsters that kept everyone entertained during this era. Not only does Beowulf represent the era well, but it also has very interesting characters, themes and symbols that help teach us lessons that are very much so needed in today's society.
Even with the written version being superior, both mediums have positives. The movie version depicted Beowulf as more realistic with him having his heroic qualities mixed with faults. This is evident when Beowulf gives into the temptation of laying with Grendel’s mother and thus creating another monster. The written version is more ambiguous with how
