There are various similarities and differences between Beowulf movie, and Beowulf book. The movie goes into more details than the book. In the movie, you actual get to know who was the father of Grendel and the Golden dragon. The book, doesn’t go into a lot of detail. In the book, Grendel’s mom was never mentioned to be covered in gold as she was displayed in Beowulf the movie. In this essay, you will discover the book version, the movie version, and the similarities/differences between Beowulf movie and the book. In the book, Hrothgar was the king of Danes, and he was troubled by a monster named Grendel. Beowulf and 14 men sailed over the sea to the land of Danes to offer help to Hrothgar. They were escorted by a Danish guard to Herot, where Wulfgar, one of Hrothgar’s solders, tells the king of their arrival. Hrothgar knows of Beowulf and is ready to welcome the young prince and his men. Beowulf states “That I, alone and with the help of my men, may purge all evil from this hall. I have heard, too, that the monster’s scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and …show more content…
Beowulf takes the arm of Grendel and his mother comes back for revenge. The differences between Beowulf the movie and the book is that in the movie your given more details. In the movie, King Hrothgar is the father of the monster Grendel, the descendant of Cain. Beowulf is the father of the golden dragon. Beowulf killed the golden dragon by pulling out his heart. That lead to the death of the dragon and Beowulf very own self. Beowulf died being an epic hero. Also, in the movie King Hrothgar is portrayed to have a wife and many mistresses on the side. When Beowulf became king he also began to have mistresses. In the book both men are portrayed to be faithful and loyal men. In the book, Beowulf killed Grendel’s mother, but in the movie, he did not. The book didn’t give much detail like movie
In the book as well as the movie Beowulf brings fourteen men to the land of the Danes and defeats Grendel. The first main difference is that in the book Grendel’s mother only kills one Dane, Aeschere. In the movie Grendel’s mother slays all of Beowulf’s men besides Wiglaf. At this time in the book Wiglaf is not present with Beowulf and his men, but only at the final battle against the dragon. In both the book and the movie Beowulf detaches Grendel’s arm and his mother returns to the hall for revenge. In the book Beowulf immediately follows Grendel’s mother to the underwater lair, but contrastingly in the movie Beowulf would have no knowledge of Grendel’s mother unless Hrothgar would not have told him. Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother and returns to Geatland to rule in the book, however in the movie Beowulf lies about killing Grendel’s mother and stays to rule in Denmark. Just as Beowulf brought Grendel’s head back in the book, he also did so in the movie. The book does not mention that Hrothgar was the son of Grendel or that Beowulf was the father of the dragon. In the book as well as the movie Beowulf defeats the dragon and dies as the hero of the epic even though he did it in a different way at a different place. The concluding difference includes Beowulf’s funeral. The book displays his funeral as a burial near the coast of the sea, but conversely in the movie his body is put on a burning ship sent out into the
The plot is where the book and the movie totally differ, they have almost nothing in common. A big plot twist in the movie is when Beowulf goes to kill Grendel’s mother; first of all he did not end up killing her and lies about it. Also in the movie, it shows that Grendel’s mother is just angry about Beowulf killing her son, so she makes him stay and give her a new son by making love to her. Another big plot twist is when Hrothgar kills himself and Beowulf does not return back to his kingdom, and becomes King of Dane Land. But in the book Hrothgar lives and stays king of his land and Wiglaf takes the throne after Beowulf dies; “Take what I leave, Wiglaf, lead my people, help them; my time is
Some parts that the filmmakers changed take place in this next part. In the movie 50 years later after Beowulf first became king a dragon has appeared and flies around the kingdom setting buildings and people on fire. Beowulf goes to find him in grendels mothers cave. He was successful and there was a long scene with Beowulf flying around on his back trying to stab the dragon. Beowulf is hanging on a chain that is wrapped around the dragon. He tries to swing back and for to stab the dragon in the heart. He can't quite reach so hi cuts his arm off that
Both of the pieces of literature, Grendel and Beowulf, contain the same story; it is just told from different viewpoints. Beowulf is an epic oratorical poem depicting the heroic Beowulf defeating the hideous creature that haunts the halls of Herot. Grendel, however, allows the reader to be able to experience the story from Grendel’s point of view. Though the books depict the same creature who possesses the same qualities, within Grendel, he is given more human characteristics and this makes the reader feel as though they are reading about a different being.
Throughout “Beowulf”, Beowulf decides to go on an adventure to the Danish islands and help out the Danes in a battle of good versus evil. The reason of Beowulf’s journey was to end the reign of terror of Grendel, a monster who lives under Herot and massacres individuals. In the poem Beowulf states to King Hrothgar, “‘…Now Grendel and are called/ Together, and I have come…That I, alone and with the help of my men,/ May purge all evil from this hall,” (Beowulf 254-261). This quotation explains that Beowulf wants to rid the world of evil and help the Danes defeat what has been preying on their men and inflicting terror upon a civilization. Also, Beowulf
Both the epic poem Beowulf and the novel Grendel depict the same storyline, but from different point of views. Grendel’s personality tends to be much more evil than he himself depicts in the novel. Since Grendel is the narrator of the novel, the audience only gets to know what the story is like from his point of view, which he stretches the truth on numerous occasions. But, in Beowulf, the poem has a narrator and is in the third person omniscient, this means the audience knows how all the characters and feeling, thinking, or saying. Also, the theme nature vs. nurture appears a lot in Grendel which means his viewpoints on certain things are either
Beowulf, a hero, which is a savior figure. He stands up for a cause and belief against great odds. When Beowulf was composed, England was changing from a pagan to a Christian culture. Beowulf reflects both pagan and Christian traditions. In this essay, I will compare the 2007 British American 3D motion film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Neil Gaines And Roger Avary, and also the book version mentioning the personality of Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s mom and the battle with the dragon. In the movie and poem Beowulf’s personality is shown differently and expressed in a different form. In the movie and poem Beowulf there was many differences and similarities that were noticeable such as the portrayal of Grendel’s mother, Grendel being the son of Hrothgar, and Beowulf’s battle with the dragon.
Beowulf is one hell of an adventure. Slaying demons and dragons and even evil dark queens. But the movie compared to the epic is very different. In the movie, instead of Grendel attacking at night, he attacked while people had been awake just to add more adventure in the movie, but also, Beowulf is not entirely honest in the movie like he is in the epic. An example of this shows when he is slaying Grendel, he takes off all of his armor and clothes to give this naked, weaponless demon a fighting chance. Yes, Beowulf put up an intense fight with his demon to kill him, but Beowulf ended up killing him with the door of the room and taking the demon’s arm off with it. This is considered using a weapon, but making Beowulf kill the demon with the door gave him a chance to add more of the adventure to the story when he gives his “I am Beowulf” speech to the demon while the demon’s arm is in the door, defenseless. Also, in the movie they add pathos to the story line by showing after Beowulf left the island to go back to Geatsland, Hrothgar kills himself instead of just
One aspect of Grendel that is alike in both stories is the way he acts. In Grendel the monster kills many people. He does it very brutally too. "Enough of that! A night for tearing heads off, bathing in blood. Except, alas, h has killed his quota for the season. Care, take care of the gold-egg-laying goose! There is no limit to desire but desire's needs." This was Grendel's law. He does not take pity on any human. From his point of view, the humans deserved this and they were going to get it. These actions are the same in Beowulf
The beginning of the movie, we see that the king Hrothgar is having a feast and/or celebration. We start to identify that King Hrothgar is a man who laid with other women and don’t have too much respect for anyone. This man was in no way set for being a king and it made us, the audience wonder on how he could have became a king over a few many people. In the book of Beowulf, King Hrothgar was fit to be one, but wasn’t young and couldn’t defeat Grendel. In this paper, we’ll be focusing on the differences of Beowulf the film, and book and see and compare each of the books.
He succumbs to Grendel’s mother and fornicates with her as she, in return, gains control of the magical cup and creates another monster, a dragon. Another crucial difference is that in the book Beowulf becomes king of the Geats and in the movie, he becomes king of the Danes. Beowulf has different values in the book as opposed to the movie. The movie version of Beowulf represents a very modern and American style hero because, in modern culture, the audience is more gravitated toward a flawed character they can relate to.
To begin, one of the many ways that Beowulf was different than Grendel is that Beowulf was brave. Every night Grendel snuck into Herot Hall to destroy King Hrothgar’s men. He did this while hiding in the shadows, sneaking around in the dead of night, and attacking while the men we asleep and at there most vulnerable. These are not the characteristics the brave, these are the characteristics of a foul, loathsome, cowardly beast. Mean while, Beowulf liked to meet a problem head on, in this case the problem was Grendel himself. Determined Beowulf sailed to Denmark to defeat Grendel, telling Hrothgar that he will take Grendel’s life with his bare hands. As told in the story, “ That mighty protector of men/ Meant to hold the monster till it’s life/ leaped out” (Raffel, 1963, l. 366-368). And when Beowulf got the chance to do just that, Grendel took the cowards road, “Grendel’s one thought
This also relates to the contrasting appearances when comparing Grendel’s mother in both formats of the story. Throughout the poem she was described as being a heinous monster that was absolutely unappealing and horrifying. But in the movie adaptation she is shown as being a beautiful, mysterious looking woman who manages to seduce everyone she comes in contact with. Along with the dissimilar images of the characters is also how a few of them had differing personalities, changing the plot of the story. The poem showed Beowulf coming to Denmark for the sole purpose of slaying Grendel and helping Hrothgar because of his relationship with his late father. In the movie version Beowulf is more concerned with glory for himself and becoming wealthy and powerful. When offered by Grendel’s mother the ability to become a great king he chooses that over trying to fight and defeat her. This shows Beowulf's character shift between the poem and the film in which his priorities and allegiance shifts from the benefits of others to benefits for himself.
Starting off with the big main character, Beowulf. In the epic, Beowulf is portrayed as a hero and a warrior. Beowulf is noble to Hrothgar, the king, but also he was courageous and stood by his word. He is also brave when he stands up and offers to kill Grendel. In the 2007 film, Beowulf is portrayed as the complete opposite. He was a lying and dishonest, craven in the Hollywood creation. Yes, Beowulf did have his flaws, it’s understandable everyone is not perfect but what Hollywood made wasn’t just imperfections. When Hrothgar decides to take his own life, Beowulf was named king, he had cheated on Wealhtheow. Beowulf had accompanied a younger mistress. Thus in conclusion, the Beowulf in the epic poem was far more
In the epic poem Beowulf is made to be seen as completely honest but in the movie they show him as a dishonest and corrupt man. There are several incidents in the movie where Beowulf shows his dishonesty, for example when Beowulf comes to Denmark and tells the story of him fighting the sea monsters he remembers when he was seduced by a mermaid, but he fails to actually tell the people about this incident. In the movie Beowulf has several incidents with affairs, when he first comes to Denmark he messes around with the queen and after he takes the throne he has an affair with a younger maiden, this is different from the poem because in the poem it doesn’t mention anything about Beowulf having any dishonesty. Another major difference between the poem and the movie is the fact that Grendel’s mother is never slain in the
