Heroes. We all know them when we see them. So, the real question is what makes someone a hero? Characteristics of a hero are shown in the story, Beowulf. The story tells us how one man, Beowulf, comes to King Hrothgar and the people of Spear-Danes’ rescue in a successful attempt to save them from a terrible beast that is threatening them. Beowulf is the simplest kind of epic there is. It's about the conflict between a brave, loyal, and generous warrior and the beasts and dragon of Spear-Danes and Geatland. Beowulf most definitely shows characteristics of an epic hero through bravery, loyalty, and generosity and friendship. First, Beowulf showcases his heroic nature through his bravery throughout his quest. When Beowulf comes to Heorot, he is “the mightiest man on earth, / highborn and powerful. He announced his plan” (197-199). Beowulf is the head man for the Geats …show more content…
Nobody tried to stop him, which clearly shows that nobody would dare challenge him, as he is mightier than anybody else. He also shows bravery when deciding to help Hrothgar by “like the leader he was, enlisting men, / the best he could find; with fourteen others / the warrior boarded the boat as captain,” (206-208). By choosing the mightiest and bravest men, Beowulf reflects himself as a brave man to lead his noble people. Beowulf was very persistent in choosing the brave men he did, which not only proved how much braver he was, but proved that he was an epic hero. Before Beowulf faced Grendel, “He began to remove his iron breast-mail, / took off the helmet and handed his attendant / the patterned sword,” (671-673). In doing this action, Beowulf decided that using a weapon or protection of any kind would make the battle too easy. After this action of bravery, he boasts, “When it comes to fighting, I count myself / as dangerous any day as Grendel” (677-678). Beowulf appears to be more daring and heroic after these reckless and impressive
True heroes are brave and bold. They often sacrifice themselves in order to save many others. In a multitude of works of literature, heroes are common and often symbolize the good of humanity and the strength of self. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the character Beowulf, the defender of Geat and Herot, clearly exemplifies the traits that mark an ideal hero. Beowulf’s strength, quest for glory, and egocentric personality characterize him as a true hero.
A true Hero risks his life to fight for a noble cause. He does not run away in the face of danger, but faces it with courage to help people live better lives. Beowulf is an epic poem that tells a story of a legendary hero who fights for the greater good for all people. Heroes all exhibit bravery, courage, loyalty, honor, and leadership when faced danger. Beowulf displays all the qualities and characteristics needed to be an epic hero throughout the epic.
He showed courage by risking his own life to help Hrothgar and the people of Herot by volunteering to fight Grendel. Beowulf states “That I alone, and with the help of my men, may purge all the evil from this hall” (pg.48). He also showed courage by fighting the dragon, even though he was getting too old, he still wanted to help and fight the dragon. He stated “I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me” (pg.56-57). Beowulf exemplified having courage by putting down his weapons and armor in the battle between him and Grendel, he wanted to fight him equally considering Grendel had no weapons. He made it a battle of strength and he displayed courage by believing in himself and taking a risk in fighting against Grendel. Beowulf was very full of courage, which he proved by fighting in his battles and risking his life for the sake of others.
A way Beowulf demonstrates his heroism is the way he stays true to the Geats by honoring them. Before
Beowulf, like other epic heroes, possesses the following heroic qualities: epic heroes are superhuman types of beings. They show great bravery, intelligence, strength and resourcefulness. They have a strong admiration for the values of their society. They are dominant male figures and suffer severe pain, but in the end, they
Every epic hero possesses certain heroic characteristics. The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. Beowulf is the hero. He shows that he is a great man by always putting other things before his own needs. He is important and needed by his people and is known by many as a strong, courageous and a helpful person. He shows all of the qualities and traits that a true hero possesses.
Christopher Reeve once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Hero’s are around us in our everyday lives such as firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect people and their property. Other hero’s can be found in literature. These hero’s, also know as an epic hero, exhibit superhuman qualities to help fight and protect others while on their quest. Being a hero means taking on enormous responsibilities. With these responsibilities comes great praise from others which both Beowulf and everyday firefighter receive for their extraordinary work.
We have all had someone whom we have considered our hero. We call them our hero because they have exhibited certain characteristics that make us feel safe or protected in harmful situations. A few books demonstrate heroic characteristics masterfully through their characters. Beowulf portrays a strong, self-sacrificing hero. Canterbury Tales shows us a wise and caring hero. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight displays a flawed, loyal hero. These three men give us some of the attributes it takes to be considered a hero. These books tell us that to be a hero, you have to sacrifice, have wisdom, and loyalty.
Monsters, their mothers, and dragons! The epic poem Beowulf, author unknown, includes all these mystical creatures and an impervious protagonist after which the poem is named. As the main character in the poem, Beowulf exemplifies the heroic archetype physically, spiritually, and ethically.
In the movie Spider-Man, the hero has a rivalry with the Green Goblin. The Green Goblin taunted Spiderman for a very long time until the alter ego of Peter Parker had enough of the Goblin. Every encounter between Spiderman and Green Goblin always turn into a retreat of the Goblin but at the very end of the movie, Spiderman turns out to be victorious. Spiderman is considered to be a modern day hero. An Anglo-Saxon hero is a hero from the Medieval years and fights with swords, not spider webs. Just like Beowulf, he wins a lot of his battles. Each hero has his own special characteristics that make him unique. In the poem Beowulf, the hero clearly demonstrates bravery, boastfulness and super strength within his fights.
The story of Beowulf is an epic poem. This epic poem includes Anglo-Saxon that are exiled by heroes, elegy, scops, and a cross of Christianity and pagan religions. The heroes in this story are known as epic heroes. The long dangerous journeys they endure are called quest. On these quest the heroes complete many valorous deeds. Along the way these heroes almost always receive a divine intervention, where they receive help from a god in their battle. The divine intervention gives them strength to win the battle and indulge in the heroism they receive thereafter. One of these heroes was Wiglaf.
In Anglo Saxon culture and literature, to be a hero was to be a warrior. The narrative epic poem, Beowulf, vastly exhibits and puts into action brilliantly the Germanic gallant code, honoring valor, strength, and devotion to warriors; cordiality, political strong suit in kings, bounteousness, ceremoniousness in women, and good reputation in all people.
Beowulf is always seeking to help his enrich his image. This flaw in his character, as well as his feeling of invincibility leads to his downfall later in life. “Again and again the angry monsters made fierce attacks, I served them well with my noble blade, as was only fitting. Small pleasure they had in such a sword-feast, dark things in the sea that meant to eat me, …I had chanced to kill some nine sea-beasts. I never have heard of a harder night-fight under heaven’s vault, or a man more oppressed on the ocean streams.”(Beowulf p83) It is very apparent here that Beowulf is extremely proud of what he had accomplished, and was not going to let some other person who had done no major heroic deed try to put him down. In fact, he goes on to say that no one in the world has fought such a hard fight as he did that night.
There are stories told all over the world handed down from generation to generation. Some remember these stories by memory, but are lost in time, and some write them down to be remembered forever as a part of history. Beowulf is one such story that has been mysteriously remembered for many centuries. I’ve very much enjoyed reading Beowulf. However, since this story has been around for so long many people have added, reduced, or omitted bits and pieces of the story. In other words, it has become an almost epic legend, never knowing if it was real or if it is rumor. And like any rumor being told to others, the story gets better and better over time like a fine wine. Since this poem has been around for many centuries, it is clear in much of
Courage is a major component of the hero’s artillery. Up to his death, Beowulf’s courage was boundless. He competed with Breca in a swimming match on the open seas; he fought Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and finally, the dragon that caused his death. In each situation, Beowulf displayed strength, wisdom, and faith. In all of his expeditions, he never really showed resistance. It can be argued that he was reluctant in the last battle with the dragon but this is to be expected since he was considerably older. In the fight with Grendel, Beowulf used his arm strength to accomplish his task. He was able to rip off Grendel’s shoulder and arm:
