The actions of our present day are often impacted by past events and ways of living. As many people reflect on the past, it is easy to see how it has simple cultural experiences are still a part of daily living. History is apparent Anglo- Saxon culture influences the plot of “Beowulf” because many events and actions that occur correlate with those that took place in history and past culture. It is apparent that when Beowulf is brought to Herot to Grendel it is directly associated with Anglo- Saxon history. In historic times, it had been said that a “lord led warriors; warriors fought for his lord.” Beowulf is essentially a warrior and Hrothgar is his lord. Even though Beowulf is from another land, he still had to be granted permission from Hrothgar in order to kill Grendel. Beowulf states, “grant me, then, lord and protector of this noble place, A single request!”(160). With the permission from Hrothgar, Beowulf follows forward with killing Grendel. It is evident that the mead-hall shares the same premise as a hearth- hall would in the past. During the Anglo- Saxon time period, the hearth- hall served as a building block. The lord wanted to protect his land, and he would sometimes need a warrior to provide the security for him. The lord would bring in men and have them stay in the hearth- hall. This appears in “Beowulf” as King Hrothgar’s land needs to be protected from Grendel. The desperation for his land to be under protection is apparent as he states “a mighty prince mourning The fate of his lost friends and companions, Knowing by its tracks that some demon had torn His followers apar. He wept, fearing The beginning might not be the end” (45). When Beowulf and his men stay in the mead-hall to wait for Grendel to arrive to kill him it is the same as the Anglo- Saxon’s would in their
