The Comparison of “Beowulf” and “13th Warrior” Beowulf is an epic poem written a long time ago. The 13th Warrior is pretty much a movie based on Beowulf but not exactly. The two pieces of literature both shared a lot of differences and similarities as well. The 13th Warrior offered a more realistic, believable, and more understanding of the epic tale of Beowulf. It’s a short story covering the bases of a triumphant hero battling three supernatural monsters. But there had a lot of theatrical remake of the original story; it provides us with the barbaric cannibalistic tribe of the Wendols, which were creatures of the mist. Both the epic Beowulf and the movie the 13th Warrior shared similarities and differences in the struggle of good …show more content…
Even though there are a lot of differences they also had a few similarities. One of them was the point that in the poem and movie Beowulf or Buliwulf died and they died as a king. They were similar to some of the characters, battles, events, and the terminations. The battle events of Beowulf and 13th Warrior are comparable. In both Beowulf and his followers seek for an entrance into the monster’s home to kill the mother and Wendol or Grendol seek for Buliwylf location as well. They both ended with Wendol and his mother dyeing. In conclusion Buliwylf or Beowulf died as a king. In my opinion, I had the thought of Beowulf being a very boring literature story that I was forced to read because I’m a senior. But overall I enjoyed the poem. Yes it was kind of hard to read and comprehend due to the Anglo-Saxon literature. As far as the movie ‘13th Warrior” I really enjoyed because I’m such a visual learner. Even though the movie was somewhat different in names and kind of out of order I was still able to understand and point out the different events from the poem. So due to this watching this movie really enhanced my knowledge about
Beowulf is about a warrior who fights a huge monster to show his loyalty to a king that was not even his. It was written in the Anglo-Saxon time period and this greatly affects the way the story is written. Grendel is written from the monster's point of view and this was written many years later.
There are a few scenes in “The 13th Warrior” that are comparable to scenes in Beowulf. When Ahmed and his men were attacked by the bear men in the small hut, they fought for a while and the bear men fled back into the night to their cave. This scene is correspondent to when Beowulf defeated Grendel in the mead-hall. Grendel fled back into the night, down to his cave under the hellish waters of the lake. After these scenes in Beowulf and “The 13th Warrior” another event takes place that is much like each other. Beowulf is asked to find Grendel’s mother and slay her as well. He searches for hours in the lake until he is snatched by her and is carried to her cave. Beowulf slaughters her here. In “The 13th Warrior” Ahmed and his comrades murdered the bear men’s mother, just as
The plot of the epic poem Beowulf and the film The 13th Warrior differ greatly from each other. In Beowulf the main character, Beowulf sets sail to the Danes land in order to defeat a monster named Grendel. In the film, the character that represents Beowulf is named Buliwyf, setting out to defeat a race called the Wendols. Also in the poem, Beowulf defeats Grendel in his first attack, however in the 13th Warrior Buliwyf does not defeat all of the Wendols on the first attack. Instead, the Wendols are
Movies and books are never the exact same, sometimes even the whole plot is changed around. In the book Beowulf the plot, characters, and setting are a lot different than they are when the movie was created. If a person watched the movie before they read the book, it may be totally confusing to read. In the book, Beowulf shows up and plans to fight with his men, then leaves to go back to his own kingdom. In the movie Beowulf, Beowulf ends up staying and becoming king of Dane Land.
The epic poem of Beowulf has been around since the 700 ce. It has been passed down by story telling. The poem is a northern european myth. Majority of the action takes place in Denmark, Geatland however, this location is now Southern Sweden. Beowolf is a heroic myth. It is about a hero's journey. The film The 13th Warrior did not do the poem much justice. It had things which were similar and things that were different. The poem is written in third person and the movie in first person. Both have similar names, in the poem the character's name is Beowulf and in the movie it is Buliwyf. In the book there is much symbolism this is made especially with weapons. In the poem it is written they would even sleep with there weapons that is how important
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
The first difference I notice is in the book women are very disrespected with not having very many rights, while in the movie women are in the Mead Hall with the men partying not much in the kitchen like the book portrayed, that’s the very first thing I see. Also now in the book Beowulf rips Grendle’s arm off for his death but in the movie Beowulf grapples Grendel, who has a chain wrapped around his arm, pulling it loose. As Grendel is trying to flee Heorot, Beowulf slams the door on his arm, severing it. Also in the book Grendle’s mother goes to avenge them but in the movie his mother visits Beowulf as he is asleep with all the other villagers and she visits him in his dreams and awakens to see she has killed many men of the Herot. Also in the book the mother’s lair is guarded in the movie it’s deserted. After slaying Grendel's mother, Beowulf brings Hrunting, Grendel's head and the hilt from the giant's sword back to Heorot in the book where in the movie she brings the head to
Beowulf is one of the oldest poems in history, it was originally written in Anglo-Saxon, and it was told orally with many literary devices so it could be remembered throughout generations. It shows what their society was based on back in the Anglo-Saxon era. Although throughout history the poem has been changed to fit our modern day society. For example, having different values and morals and how we look at religion has all changed. In the Beowulf poem and movie there are many similarities and differences in Religion, Characterization, and Morals it highlights the value and beliefs of each society.
The story of Beowulf is one of a great hero. Beowulf is a very generous person who is always willing to help out when people are in need. Over the course of the story, Beowulf ends up in three major battles: the battle with Grendel, with Grendel’s mother, and with the dragon. All of these battles were different in their style and the way Beowulf approached them was different. Beowulf also had different reasons to participate in each of the battles.
In the Epic poem of Beowulf, the theme is good vs. evil. But in the movie Hollywood made everything is different. Beowulf is not honest, women are sexually powerful, and the monsters are Hrothgar and Beowulf’s sons, etc. They added many things that were definitely now in the poem. If you read the poem then watching the movie you would be confused. You would be asking so many questions. But the current audience think good vs. evil is boring.
Religions play various different roles throughout literature, the most common one I think of is Christianity. We will discuss what the role of Religion is in Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney and the role in the movie The 13th Warrior. Christianity, Islam, and Anglo-Saxon Paganism are the various Religions’ that are expressed in both the literature and the movie. Since both works are similar, but written in a different point of view because of different beliefs we will discuss the difference between Beowulf and The 13th warrior throughout the paper. Another thing we will be discussing is how the authors use religion in a unique way in both works to portray their story in their own way. Before we begin our comparison we will begin with some information on Anglo-Saxon Paganism and Islam.
Beowulf was a book composed during the Anglo-Saxon period of the world. It is a fictional about an epic hero know as Beowulf who kills mighty creatures and saves kingdoms from opposing armies and demons. This hero was from part of a tribe of a tribe known as the Gaets. In this story he comes to the aid of the Danes and their king Hrothgar. He battles multiple creatures for the Danish king and his helpless people during his time in the kingdom. He was seen as a hero their and feared throughout the surrounding kingdoms. In this essay i will compare and contrast the Beowulf movie and the book. I will discuss the differences in the setting, theme, and characters between the two. I will also discuss the differences of the fights he had with the
Likewise, the difference was gold. In the book Beowulf was rich. Back in those days when you were pouring with gold you were a good warrior. A good warrior could pay for a good army to win fights. In the book gold was not important, it was about Glory.
In his three major battles, Beowulf fights for many different reasons. His motivation varies, and as he grows older and wiser his attitude toward these battles also changes. Throughout the epic, Beowulf bradoshously beats Grendel, then more methodically murders Grendel’s mother, and with his last breathes humbly hollers for help to slay the dragon. This shows that Beowulf’s early focuses of glory and riches changes as he becomes a weathered warrior acknowledges that he cannot defeat his enemies alone and must utilize the resources provided to him such as armor, magical items, and companions.
The stories of Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales are two that have been compared for centuries. Based in two different time periods, both novels describe religion, loyalty, and distinguish social classes through characters. In the novel Beowulf, the character Beowulf is known as the “hero of all heroes,” strong, courageous, and a warrior who is willing to risk his life for his ideals. In The Canterbury Tales, there are twenty-four tales describing characters from a knight to a monk’s tale. As the stories are written in two different time periods with different themes and voices, they can be compared in many ways. Both novels describe religion through their warriors, Beowulf and the Knight from The Canterbury Tales.
