The word “hero” has had many different definitions throughout history, but all of them seem to include something about being courageous and having a desire to help other people. In the epic poem Beowulf, the main character (Beowulf) has many heroic qualities. Beowulf was a hero born in Geatland who sailed out to Denmark to protect the people. This piece of literature displays to the reader what Beowulf is like in his youth and in his old age. Over the course of his life, he shows many heroic qualities, making him a hero. Possibly the most commonly known heroic trait, courage, can easily be seen in Beowulf. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬Having courage is being able to go through dangerous situations with more confidence than fear. Beowulf is also described as the “mightiest man-at-arms” (Beowulf 19) by the coast guard upon their fist encounter. His next victory over Grendel’s mother is a perfect example of his strength and endurance. In this battle, he is pulled underwater to fight his opponent. Originally, his sword caused no harm to Grendel’s mother, “He would have to rely on the might of his arm. So must a man do who intends to gain enduring glory in combat” (Beowulf 107). His willingness to fight with nothing but his own hands helps to prove he has the strength of a hero. Then he took a sword from her armory in the midst of his battle, which helped him overpower the creature (Beowulf 107). This amazing victory combined with his ability to do all of that underwater proves Beowulf’s heroic …show more content…
He is obviously very loyal to the Danes since he agreed to come back and kill Grendel’s mother after already killing Grendel. However, Beowulf’s loyalty is also present in his older age. At this point, he is back in Geatland. After the king of Geatland died, Beowulf was not overcome with the desire for power, so he was respectful of the rightful heir. “The greater right and sway were inherited by the higher born” (Beowulf 149). Eventually a group of swordsmen cut him down from the throne and all power went to Beowulf (Beowulf 151). This showed his loyalty and respect to his land and his people. Loyalty is an extremely important part of being a hero, because without loyalty, it would be easy to go crazy with power and become very
According to Belen Lowrey’s paper, The Hero as a Reflection of Culture, Beowulf shows his strength and bravery “by recounting the swimming match with Brecca as well as by winning the battles with Grendel and Grendel’s mother” (Lowrey). In addition, after Beowulf’s battle with Grendel, the narrator says that his courage was proven and his glory was secure
Beowulf’s strength is exemplified many times in the story. Beowulf was said to have “the strength of thirty men in his mighty handgrip.” He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious from all but his last. In his argument with Unferth, Beowulf explains the reason he lost a swimming match with his opponent Brecca. Not only had Beowulf been swimming for seven nights, he had also stopped to kill nine sea creatures in the depths of the ocean. Beowulf is also strong enough to kill the monster Grendel with his bare hands by ripping off his arm. When Beowulf is fighting Grendel’s mother, he is able to slay her by slashing the monster’s neck with a giant sword that can only be lifted by a person as strong as Beowulf. When he chops off her head, he carries it from the ocean with no difficulty, but it takes four men to lift and carry it back to Heorot. This strength is a key trait of Beowulf’s heroism.
Courage is certainly a trait which every hero must possess, particularly because no one wants a hero who is a coward. Thankfully, Beowulf is no coward. When Beowulf hears of Grendel’s exploits in Denmark, he travels to the “distant” land, without hesitation, to rid the Danes of that “demon…conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God”. Beowulf’s courage is displayed even more when he chooses not to fight with weapons, despite knowing
Every epic hero possesses certain heroic characteristics. The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. Beowulf is the hero. He shows that he is a great man by always putting other things before his own needs. He is important and needed by his people and is known by many as a strong, courageous and a helpful person. He shows all of the qualities and traits that a true hero possesses.
The other leading heroic trait that Beowulf possesses is loyalty. The Anglo-Saxon warriors believe in the idea of comitatus, which are the faithful and unbreakable bonds between his king and his warriors. Throughout the story, Beowulf had shown devotions to both his leader and his followers. As mentioned earlier, Beowulf easily passed all the treasure to his uncle noting that “since every benefit I have ever received I owe to you, my closest and kindest kinsman on earth." (Chapter 31).He shows great gratitude to his king by presenting all of his treasures that he had gained. He was then portrayed to be “loyal and true and loved him dearly,” (Chapter 31). Additionally, not only he is committed to his rulers, Beowulf is also loyal to his followers. As described by Wiglaf, one of his most faithful men, “Our ancient king often gave us---heroes while in hall!---helmets and mailcoats, the finest treasures he could find for his men anywhere on earth, armor like the brilliant well-wrought war-gear you are
An example of heroism is shown in battle one when it says “None/of the wise one’s regretted his going, much/As he was loved by the Geats”(Beowulf 116-118). He was dependable and adored by the Geats. They trusted him and believed in him to fight for them and protect them. Beowulf demonstrates bravery by fighting Grendel and saving the people of Herot.
also demonstrates loyalty to King Hrothgar, who “led / The Danes to such glory that comrades and kinsmen / Swore by his sword” (12-14) even though King Hrothgar is not his king. Beowulf knows that he came onto King Hrothgar’s land, so he should be loyal and respectful to Hrothgar.
In Beowulf the classic epic, Beowulf, the hero of the epic, and other major characters reflect heroic ideals and beliefs of courage, generosity, unquestioning loyalty and devotion. Courage is most evident throughout Beowulf Beowulf does not back down from any challenge that stands in his way whether it be Grendel, Grendel’s mother, or the dragon. His bravery is most evident in his preparation for his fight with Grendel, Beowulf, “took off his shirt of armour, the helmet from his head, handed his embellished sword, best of irons to an attendant,…” He chose to bravely fight his foe, man to beast without weaponery for he knew it would be “cowardly” to defeat Grendel with a sword and armor when Grendel himself had none. Even in his
A final example of heroic qualities shown by Beowulf is his power. The mental and physical strength is mandatory to being a hero. No Dane, before Beowulf’s arrival, is able to defeat Grendel because of fear and
Throughout the story, Beowulf embodies the characteristics of a hero. Beowulf is going to save people from a beast named Grendel using only his bare hands. He is heroic because he has unnatural strength, courage, and selfless. When describing what Beowulf will do to kill the monster the he says, “is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I” (line 168). Beowulf had faught many giants before and he is confidence and asks only one thing, that only him and his men fight the monster.
“If this combat kills me, take care /of my young company, my comrades in arms. /And be sure also, my beloved Hrothgar, /to send Hygelac the treasures I have received.” (lns. 1480-1483) This quote shows that Beowulf thinks first of his people, then of his possessions. The quote starts with Beowulf facing the fact that he may not come back from this fight alive, revealing that although he has superhuman strength, he is still human and can die. The very next thing Beowulf says of Hrothgar is a request to keep the young men that came to fight with him safe should he not survive. This shows Beowulf’s compassion towards his fellow warriors and that they are his main concern. Lastly he makes sure that Hrothgar knows what to do with Beowulf’s earthly possessions. By requesting that his possessions be given to his king Beowulf shows his selflessness and loyalty to his people.
Christopher Reeve once said “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endures in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” In other words, a hero is a normal person who is able to be strong and persevere despite difficult obstacles preventing them. In the book, Beowulf, the the nephew of the king of the land of the geats, helps Hrothgar, another king, kill a series of monsters that threaten his kingdom. He helps Hrothgar kill Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and The Firedrake. Beowulf is a hero because he is just an ordinary person who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite the overwhelming obstacles preventing him from doing so. Beowulf embodies Christopher Reeve’s definition of a hero because he defeated the flesh-eating Grendel, who could not be stopped even by groups of elite soldiers. Beowulf also killed Grendel’s mother, a much eviler being who lived in a cave in an endless pool of blood that led to hell. Finally, he defeated The Firedrake, who swelled up and breathed fire when angry.
A true hero have to be strong and courageous and still be humble. In literature, Beowulf can be a perfect example. Both, the novel and poem Beowulf actions tell us that he is willing to sacrifice all for the peace his people has been waiting and wanting. Beowulf actions are perfect examples of an Anglo-Saxon hero, he demonstrate us that his courage and strengths are set examples for many corrupt called “heroes” during his time of age. Grendel is a brutally cruel beast who lives on an open cave at the bottom of a boiling cave with his mother, he attacks the meadhall for food and an insatiable pleasure for
To begin with, One of Beowulf’s characteristics for being an epic hero would be his strength. Beowulf first killed Grendel, which no one else could defeat because Grendel was too powerful. Then, Beowulf killed Grendel’s Mother who was defeated by Beowulf’s bare hands because his sword wasn’t powerful enough to kill her. Last, Beowulf defeated the Dragon by taking his heart from his body which is something no one else could have done. Beowulf’s dedication and strength set forth to him being able to defeat the dragon. "I’d use no sword, no weapon, if this beast could be killed without it, crushed to death, like Grendel, Gripped in my hands and torn limb from limb." (42). This quote means that when Grendel couldn’t be defeated by any weapons, Beowulf made it simple and said that he was going

These traits and characteristics are more expressed in ancient epics and poems.
