Beowulf is one of the oldest epic poems from the 6th century from Scandinavia. Beowulf’s story was originally told in old English during the years of 500 to 1100. Beowulf’s legacy lives on by being retold and read about all his greatest battles. All of his battles where great and he fought all these with confidence and truth. The first battle was between Grendel and Beowulf. It took place in hrothgar. With all the strength he had he was able to finally get a good hold on Grendel as he was able to rip Grendel’s arm off. After Grendel got away Beowulf took Grendel’s arm and hung it up as a trophy. The second battle was between Beowulf and Grendel’s mother. It took place next to harot in the monsters lair underwater.
What are the challenges of the Anglo-Saxon life, that Beowulf faces? The strongest competitors Beowulf faced were Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon.
The first battle takes place in the same spot in the movie and in the poem. Beowulf is called Buliwyf in the movie. Both groups of people, Beowulf and Buliwyf went to help Hrothgar 's people and to protect the people at Mead Hall. In the epic poem of Beowulf and the movie, The 13th Warrior, the second and third battle took place underground in caves where they had to fight an evil woman. In the book I am assuming this is Grendel’s mother, the evil woman who is mad that they killed her only son.
Once his mother tries getting the revenge on him that he did on her son by getting him to the point where he can’t handle her strong grip, the “holy God decided the victory (1553-1554).” He returned back on his feet getting a good grip of the heavy sword swings it and results in him cutting through her neck. Accomplishing another big victory, Beowulf and the guards return to land with Grendel’s head and the melted sword surprising everybody by their return. Beowulf stated, “if God had not helped me, the outcome would have been quick and fatal (1657-1658),” allowing the people to know that he almost did not return. Proud of Beowulf, Hrothgar speaks highly of him after being presented with the remains of the sword informing him of the powers and responsibility he has. As he gets older, he begins to realize his responsibilities and that he can no longer fight and protect the people like he used to when the dragon arrives and he refused it, but then states that, “I shall pursue this fight for the glory of winning, if the evil one will only abandon his earth-fort and face me in the open (2513-2515).” Once again going through the tough time, “he could not hold back: one hand brandished the yellow-timbered shield, the other drew his sword (2609-2910),” and with the help of Wiglaf, they defeat
Beowulf is an epic poem whose earliest surviving copy was written in 1000 A.D. The story consists of three thousand one hundred and eighty two lines that follow the life of the title character. The original author of the epic poem is unknown mainly because it started as a verbal tale passed down orally through the ages. Finally someone wrote it down in a document now called the Nowell Codex. The epic tale is centered on Beowulf and his actions in an adventure to repay a debt owed by his father to Hrothgar, a Danish king. A gargantuan monster that is terrorizing Hrothgar’s mead hall is Beowulf’s target and Beowulf sails across the sea to aid his father’s
Beowulf is the earliest surviving epic poem written in a modern European language. It was written in Old English sometime before the tenth century A.D. The poem describes the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century. Beowulf is described as a perfect hero who fights for his people and gets rid of
Beowulf himself faces two main obstacles or battles that are considered “tests” to prove his fierceness and strength as a warrior. First, Beowulf faces Grendel, who has proved himself to be fierce after killing both Hrothgar and some of Beowulf’s men. Beowulf struggles to defeat Grendel, however halfway through the battle Beowulf gains the upper hand. Grendel realizes this, and “Knew at once that nowhere on earth/ Had he met a man whose hands were harder” (Beowulf 402-405). Beowulf kills Grendel, and “The Battle was over, Beowulf/Had been granted new glory” (Beowulf 470-471). This test helps Beowulf reaffirm his position as one of the strongest warriors alive, while also helping Hrothgar win back his kingdom. However, this glory does not last. Soon after this test, Beowulf faces another battle, which is considered harder to win than his conflict with Grendel. Grendel’s mother, a sea hag, “comes to avenge her son” (Raffel 27). After Beowulf dives into a lake to look for her it “takes him hours to touch bottom, but finally he encounters the sea hag.” (Raffel. 27). This battle is harder to win than his victory with Grendel, but “At last he overcomes her, and, spying a magic sword, he clutches it and with one violent stroke cuts off her head.” (Raffel 27). The trials and tribulations that
The first monster that Beowulf kills is Grendel. King Hrothgar calls for Beowulf and he comes with fourteen of his best men to meet the King about a monster named Grendel. Hrothgar explains to Beowulf that he needed help slaying this monster that had killed thirty of his men. He tells Beowulf that his men were only celebrating in Heorot, a luxurious building. Beowulf then knows that by singing he will get Grendel to come back to Heorot and so they begin to sing. Grendel then comes back when he hears the singing. He comes directly to kill whoever he sees, but Beowulf charges at the monster first and tears its shoulder off. Grendel then runs away and eventually
They were fighting in Grendel’s mother’s swamp where his sword could not damage her. They were fighting because Grendel’s mother went to retrieve her son’s arm. During this battle “anger doubled Beowulf’s strength.” This battle showed anger because, with his angry emotions,
One of the major fights that make Beowulf an epic hero is the fight with Grendel. Grendel is a monster spawned out of slime. He terrorizes and kills the Danes every night for 12 years with their attempt of fighting back. Beowulf hears about Grendel and decides to take matters in his own hand. He chose fifteen warriors to go and battle with him. On the way he meets a king named Hrothgar. Beowulf introduces himself and they go to the hall to meet the other warriors. During the night, Beowulf stays up and waits for Grendel to come out. Grendel comes out and kills a male then Beowulf wrestles him and puts up a good fight. Grendel notices Beowulf strength and starts to panic. “Grendel knew at once that nowhere on earth Had he met a man whose hands were harder; His mind was flooded with fear- but nothing could take his talons and himself from that tight Hard grip.” ("Beowulf." : A
Beowulf is an epic poem that was originally told between the eighth and eleventh centuries. It is the first surviving epic to be written in the English language. The single existing copy dates from around the tenth century, but some scholars believe its dates from the early eleventh century. It was found in a large volume that contained stories about mythical creatures and people. It is said that two different scribes copied the poem, most likely using an existing copy (Heaney 6). During the period of 1066 and the reformation the volume
Beowulf’s first battle that portrayed his supernatural ability was with Grendel, a monster who has been plaguing Hrothgar’s kingdom. He comes at night and wreaks havoc upon the kingdom, killing the men who dare destroy him. Beowulf hears of the stories about Grendel and decides to take a journey to Heorot, to free Hrothgar of the monster. Hrothgar let him in with open arms because he knew of his ancestry and he settled the debts that his father left behind, “he knows your ancestry; also that he welcomes you here to Heorot,” (lines 392-3). That night after Beowulf arrived, he stripped off his armor because he did want to face this battle with Grendel having armor and weapons. He decided that he would fight him bare handed, “And the Geat placed complete
Beowulf came to the Kingdom of King Hrothgar by ship. He was accompanied by fourteen brave Geats. He went fourth to the King and told him that he was there to slay his Monster. (Page 47, Line 238 & 239) “Now Grendels‘, Name has echoed in our land:.” The night that they arrived Beowulf and the other brave soldiers’ stayed in the Herot Hall waiting for Grendel to come and try to kill them. (Page 48, Line 287 & 288) “Grendel arrived he grabbed a Geat and ripped him apart. (Page 48, Line 314 & 315) “Grendel snatched at the first geat, He came to, ripped him apart.” After they fought him for a while, Beowulf ripped Grendel’s arm off. Then, Grendel escaped Beowulf. (Page 50, Line 393) “Grendel escaped.” The Dane’s celebrated the victory of Beowulf. But Beowulf wasn’t finished killing monsters. He slayed Grendels mother and a dragon.
The first major battle that Beowulf fights in is against Grendel. Beowulf’s motive for this particular fight is to get revenge for what Grendel did to the Danes. Grendel raided the Danes for a total of twelve years. As we learned throughout the book Beowulf was very selfless and was always willing to help out other people. When Grendel comes to Heorot, he devours and kills a Geatish warrior all while Beowulf watches very closely. After this, Grendel tries to reach out and get Beowulf, but is surprised to find his arm gripped with the great strength of Beowulf. Grendel tries to run back to his home in the swamplands because he knows that he will not be able to compete with the mighty Beowulf. At the end of the battle Beowulf summons great strength and rips Grendel’s arm off his body. Grendel, now fatally wounded, goes back to his home and eventually dies. Beowulf holds up the bloody arm of Grendel like a trophy and hangs it on the wall in Heorot as proof that he defeated Grendel. Around the
Beowulf is an epic poem that was written sometime around the 7th century. The original text was composed in Old English. The story takes place somewhere around what is modernly known as Scandinavia, despite being composed somewhere in England (x). This story is one of monsters and warriors that gives us an insight into the ideal standards of these civilizations and a potential model of what citizens could have aimed to be- a strong leader with loyal followers.
The poem Beowulf includes three battles where Beowulf has to defeat the monsters known as Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. Although he is successful in defeating the three monsters, his preparation for fighting them, his motivation for going into battle, and the conclusions of the battles demonstrate similarities and differences.
