Bernie Glassman, founder of the Zen Peacemakers Order, grew up in a Jewish family and was working as an aeronautical engineer before beginning to study Buddhism under Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi in 1967. Since becoming a Zen teacher in 1976, Glassman has changed the face of Socially Engaged Buddhism in America through his efforts to increase awareness of social issues by bearing witness to them, and through that, minimizing suffering. The main purpose of the Zen Peacemakers’ Order is the same as the main purpose of Buddhism: to minimize the suffering experienced in the world, both for oneself and for others. The ZPO views social action as a form of spiritual practice. Bernie Glassman and the rest of the American founding teachers of this organization …show more content…
All but the precept banning intoxication are included in ZPO’s modified precepts which include : 1. Non-killing, 2. Non-stealing, 3. Chaste conduct, 4. Non-lying, 5. Not being ignorant, 6. Not talking about others’ errors and faults, 7. Not elevating myself and blaming others, 8. Not being stingy, 9. Not holding onto anger, 10. Not disparaging the Three Treasures. Non-killing includes the refrain from causing any harm, which comes from recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings, including oneself. Non-stealing is connected to the idea of being content with what one has and not desiring anything else. This helps to minimize suffering as desire is identified as one of the main causes of suffering, along with ignorance and hatred. Chaste conduct is the parallel of not committing sexual misconduct, but also includes respect for the diversity of life. Non-lying mirrors the moral precept to not lie and the section of the Eightfold Path of right speech. Like right speech, this precept encourages active listening and mindful speaking to avoid false statements, slander, gossip, cursing, and harsh words. Not being ignorant is another direct alleviation of suffering, as ignorance is identified as one of the three main …show more content…

The literature and material that has arisen because of Steve Bartman’s life does little to tell of who he is. Bartman repeatedly declined to speak, even when it would be lucrative for himself. The infamous Steve Bartman incident occurred on October 14, 2003 with the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. He almost caught a foul ball that controversially might have been caught by outfielder Moisés Alou and turned the tide of the game they lost 8-3. The outpouring of blame and thrown objects forced Bartman, an avid Cubs fan, to leave, and even to sequester himself in his house for protection. This has raised issues related to

In Jim’s early life he was born in Logan County, Kentucky in April of 1796. When Jim was six years old his family moved to Bayou Boeuf, Louisiana in 1802. In Louisiana, he developed the spirit of adventure. His usual hobby was wrestling alligators and just exploring around the areas he lived by. In 1812 he enlisted in the Louisiana militia after the start of the war in 1812 against the British but he was too late to see any action. Soon he was back in the Louisiana selling timber. But with the money that he earned he bought slaves. Jim later met Jean Lafitte, who was a gulf coast pirate who was involved with illegal slave smuggling. Jim’s brothers bought smuggled slaves and said that they found them and kept the money when they were sold at
The builder of this seventeen room Greek revival mansion was Stephen S. Speakman. In the early 1840s, the elderly Speakman fell in love with a much younger woman, Sarah Bush, whose father owned a slave-holding plantation in Kentucky. Upon asking her hand in marriage, his bride-to-be refused to marry him unless he built her a southern plantation-style mansion. In 1845, with the use of his father-in-law’s slaves, Speakman erected his mansion on a five hundred acre plot next to Loughery Creek with every brick baked on site (Historical Marker Project).

There has been much controversy involving racial injustices. From the many killings by police officers of innocent and unarmed African Americans, to well recognized symbolism that may have negative connotations to some such as the Confederate flag. Many of these problems have been brought up a numerous amount of times, but never resolved. It would be a much better world if there was not any division among us. If finding solutions to these issues is a goal that is desired to be achieved, then only talking about the problem must stop, and action needs to take place. The Tillman building was built in 1894 and was formerly known as the Main Building. The name was changed in 1962 after Benjamin Tillman who was a South Carolina governor, a United

Frank Epperson, from San Francisco, California, at only eleven-years-old invented the popsicle in 1905. Frank left a cup with powdered soda, water, and a stirring stick on his front porch. There is no specific reason as to why this invention was created, it says that he forgot the cup with the mixture outside on accident. The president of the United States of America, during the time of this invention in 1905, was Theodore Roosevelt. The popsicle wasn’t its first name, Frank called it Episcle, a blend of the icicle and his name. He started selling the treat around his neighborhood, where later he gained major publicity.
Zen Buddhism is an inspiration which comes from personal experience to perceive the meaning of life. It has often been seen mysterious. In the book, An Introduction of Zen Buddhism, D.T. Suzuki points out that Zen is hard to understand and explain. In addition, he argues that Zen is not a religion, belief, knowledge, dogma, or an idea. It disdains logical thinking. Since Zen had never wasted time and effort to explains, Zen is hard to understand well. In the other word, Zen looks nihilistic because in the world of Zen knowing is unknown, and unknown is knowing; although, it seems contradictory, but it is the true meaning of Zen. In chapter three, Is Zen Nihilistic, D.T. Suzuki explains that Zen have jumped out the normal logical thinking to teach people thinking the fact. Consequently, in Chapter 3 entitled,“Is Zen Nihilistic?” D.T.
