Bethany Hamilton is an elite surfer from Kauai Hawaii. Even when she was young she won a major amateur surf contest when she was ten. However when she was 13 years old a tiger shark attack her removing her left arm. However she refuses to give up even if she has to start all over making her resilient. Is she resilient? Bethany is resilient because she strong. After the attack even with her arm off she still wasn’t afraid. “I was not afraid.” (Page 8 Shack Attack Survivor) She has to swim thorough the waves, and ride the bored with only one arm. She also has the gut to go to the ocean where shark lives. Bethany never gives up. Since Bethany was amputee, she has to re teach everything she already knows. However the hard part
David’s resilience is viewed both positively and negatively for various reasons. To come to a conclusion Bosworth first clarifies that resiliency is not a trait, but a process that occurs when individuals are interacting in their environments (Bosworth, 703). Also resiliency is not relevant without adversity, and the concept of it is tied to normative judgments. He then describes the difference between resiliency and recovery because many people tend to think the terms are interchangeable. Resiliency in adults, means that they are able to live functional lives despite having experienced a trauma, this does not mean they have emotionally recovered from said event.
Resilience, when asked to define and explain the act of being resilient, can be a hard thing to describe. It is something everyone must be at one point in their lives, and what some people must be every day. There are different levels to it, depending on what the person is going through at the time. However, resilience is commonly described as just staying strong in a tough situation or time in a person’s life. When something goes wrong, or something bad happens, the person affected doesn’t let it break them. They stand strong against whatever is being thrown at them, but they bend when they need to. Someone who is resilient is flexible, making sure they don’t crack under pressure. As Robert Jordan said in The Fires of Heaven, “The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived.”
In this case, becoming a professional surfer. Bethany didn’t even let her arm getting ripped off stop her from success. Bethany Hamilton didn’t have many weaknesses, but she did have one that affected her greatly. All she cared about was surfing. Rather than going to Mexico with her youth group, Bethany chose to stay home and surf. This is when she was attacked by the shark.
Everyone encounters obstacles in life that they feel like they can't overcome. People that have 'resilience' can take these challenges head on, stay calm in any situation, and use their problem-solving skills to take advantage of the situation and get themselves out of it. In a section of "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, a biography of war hero Louie Zamperini, Zamperini is adrift at sea after his bomber crashed in the ocean. He is left with just the remains of the plane and two others, Phil and Mac. Louie Zamperini's key characteristics of resilience and the differences between all three men allow them to overcome adversity, and Louie and Phil make it out alive.
“Life is a lot like surfing…When you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave” (“Soul Surfer”). Bethany Hamilton endured a very traumatic experience in her life, and this is why she is known as the “Soul Surfer.” The difficulties she faced and overcame were truly remarkable.

The memoir The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, takes the reader on her life journey as a child and how her family represents resilience. But, what exactly does it mean to be resilient? Resilience is the capability of a person to bounce back from a hard time, to get back on their feet after stumbling, to understand that there is no end and you can always become better. This essay will model the explanation of resilience in my words, the explanation of resilience from both what was seen in the memoir and Elizabeth Edwards, and how these three tie together to model the same title; resilience.
Resilience is the ability to overcome hard situations, learn from mistakes, and use the past to get over future hardships. Jeanette Walls shows resilience in many ways. Although her family is not too successful and live a much more
Even though Bethany lost her arm, she was still audacious, courageous and especially spirited. After getting attacked by a fierce creature, Bethany still wanted to keep doing what she loved, which was surfing. Bethany wanted to help others that were going through the exact same situation, so she decided to go all around the world and give speeches and advice to everyone she met.
Reportedly, Melanie Thornburg, a South Carolina Sheriff Captain, is in the hot seat after wearing blackface with a Bob Marley Halloween costume. Melanie Thornburg claims that, "I didn't do it out of lack of respect, and I express regret to anyone that took offense. I wouldn't have ever tried to taunt anyone."
(H) Have you ever survived or know of someone who has survived through something? How did they survive? (B) Well, many survivors have qualities that make them survive. In Trapped by Aron Ralston, he survives because he had to brake his arm to get free from the rock that was pinning his arm down.
Forty-one-year-old Oregon medical marijuana patient Kristie Groce of Portland is no stranger to adversity. Kristie has suffered immeasurably with numerous medical illnesses and injuries over the years. She had even been written off as terminal and placed on hospice care at one point. Despite the mortal diagnosis, Kristie is now thriving in ways she had never dared to dream of due, in her mind, to the healing properties of cannabis. Cannabis has not only given Kristie her life back, but now she has learned she is creating a new life, something she was told would never happen.
Whether it is surviving mentally, or physically, one must know it takes change in willpower to go out and fight for what they need. To know what one needs and to know how to get it, is what makes up a survivor. No matter the circumstances they can forget what they thought they knew to grow within their surroundings. Surviving is all about making use of their knowledge they take from their situation so they can thrive off of their circumstances, instead of failing and giving up. Resilience leads to survival because one who is willing to do things they have never done before, will save themselves in any situation because they went to different depths to save their life and maintain what they
Like many other movies, Soul Surfer clings to the same basic story-line of a character who endures a hardship but eventually overcomes it and most viewers might say it is “boring” or it “drags”. Although it could be considered cliché, I believe it offers inspiration to others, especially teenagers that might be going through a similar situation. Even though Bethany only has one arm, gets stared at everywhere she goes and is limited to almost everything she still rises above all of her hurt through
Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who survived a 2003 shark attack in which her left arm was bitten off. On the morning of October 31, 2003, Bethany went out to surf at Tunnels Beach in Ha'ena with her best friend, Alana Blanchard, and Blanchard's father and brother. While lying on her board, she suddenly felt intense pressure on her left arm and was pulled back and forth for a few seconds. Originally feeling no pain, she noticed the water around her had turned red, and her friends realized that her left arm had been bitten off nearly to the shoulder. The process of healing after that was challenging and hard for her, but she overcame it with her faith in God and hard work.
