A thirteen year old girl named Bethany Hamilton was an up and coming surfing champion. On Halloween of 2003, all of that could have changed. That day, Bethany was surfing with her best friend, Alana, Alana’s brother, Byron, and Alana’s father, Holt. While Bethany was patiently waiting for the perfect wave, she was attacked by a fifteen foot tiger shark. The shark, attracted to her watch, came up from under her board and bit off her arm. Due to the fast reaction of her best friend’s father, Bethany survived the attack. But, because of her strength to overcome adversity, her courage, and her determination, Bethany Hamilton is the perfect example of resilience. The first reason Bethany is an example of resilience can be seen in her ability to overcome adversity. When Bethany awoke in the hospital, she could see the concern in everyone’s eyes. She suddenly glanced at her stump before examining her family’s reactions to the tragedy. She realized immediately that they saw her differently. She could tell that they were afraid of how she would handle the situation. It was obvious they wanted the “old” Bethany; the surfer girl with both of her arms. Bethany did not see the attack as the “end of the world.” She knew she could overcome the loss of her limb. She would not let this tragedy ruin her life. She would learn to do everything she had done before the attack like, styling her hair, tying her shoes, and brushing her teeth. She would even surf …show more content…

Everyone encounters obstacles in life that they feel like they can't overcome. People that have 'resilience' can take these challenges head on, stay calm in any situation, and use their problem-solving skills to take advantage of the situation and get themselves out of it. In a section of "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, a biography of war hero Louie Zamperini, Zamperini is adrift at sea after his bomber crashed in the ocean. He is left with just the remains of the plane and two others, Phil and Mac. Louie Zamperini's key characteristics of resilience and the differences between all three men allow them to overcome adversity, and Louie and Phil make it out alive.
The memoir The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, takes the reader on her life journey as a child and how her family represents resilience. But, what exactly does it mean to be resilient? Resilience is the capability of a person to bounce back from a hard time, to get back on their feet after stumbling, to understand that there is no end and you can always become better. This essay will model the explanation of resilience in my words, the explanation of resilience from both what was seen in the memoir and Elizabeth Edwards, and how these three tie together to model the same title; resilience.
This summer I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and it was amazing. I really loved every page of Jeannette Wall’s novel, and it just seemed to get better and better as I kept reading. Wall’s novel is recognized as “a remarkable memoir of redemption and resilience.” But what is resilience? To be honest I couldn’t really truly comprehend what resilience was. I had a very vague definition of it, but, not anything I could explain with certainty. In this paper I will find my own definition of resilience, which’ll not only help me finish a summer assignment but also help me to fully understand resilience.
