Bethany Hamilton Resilience

Bethany Hamilton shows resilience in many ways because she did not give up when she got bit by the shark, she showed bravery towards the other amputees, and she was an amputee pro surfer. She is a courageous in what she does. She has other amputees looking up to her in a very special way. Bethany wants other to not let being an amputee push them away from doing what they love. Bethany loves what she does.

Everyone encounters obstacles in life that they feel like they can't overcome. People that have 'resilience' can take these challenges head on, stay calm in any situation, and use their problem-solving skills to take advantage of the situation and get themselves out of it. In a section of "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, a biography of war hero Louie Zamperini, Zamperini is adrift at sea after his bomber crashed in the ocean. He is left with just the remains of the plane and two others, Phil and Mac. Louie Zamperini's key characteristics of resilience and the differences between all three men allow them to overcome adversity, and Louie and Phil make it out alive.

The memoir The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, takes the reader on her life journey as a child and how her family represents resilience. But, what exactly does it mean to be resilient? Resilience is the capability of a person to bounce back from a hard time, to get back on their feet after stumbling, to understand that there is no end and you can always become better. This essay will model the explanation of resilience in my words, the explanation of resilience from both what was seen in the memoir and Elizabeth Edwards, and how these three tie together to model the same title; resilience.

This summer I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and it was amazing. I really loved every page of Jeannette Wall’s novel, and it just seemed to get better and better as I kept reading. Wall’s novel is recognized as “a remarkable memoir of redemption and resilience.” But what is resilience? To be honest I couldn’t really truly comprehend what resilience was. I had a very vague definition of it, but, not anything I could explain with certainty. In this paper I will find my own definition of resilience, which’ll not only help me finish a summer assignment but also help me to fully understand resilience.

On , October 31, 2003, Bethany went out for a morning surf with her best friend and their family. While lying on her surfboard, with her arms dangling in the water, a 14 foot tiger shark attacked her left arm. The attack severed her arm just below the shoulder. Bethany’s friend's family helped to rescue her and bring her back to shore. A tourniquet was made to hold the stomp of her arm from the surfboard

Bethany was winning major amateur surf contests by her 10th birthday. One day she was on her surf board, a 15-foot tiger shark was stalking her. The shark then attacked her. Bethany was calm when it happened. The shark took off her whole arm in one bite. Despite the devastating shark attack, Bethany Hamilton showed great resilience in achieving her surfing dream.

The reason that Bethany Hamilton has so much resilience is because she is a strong person. And she does not give up very easily And if she falls she will come back even stronger than ever. And even this day in time she is one of the best surfers in the world.

''Try it one more time. This will be it.'' Bethany Hamilton father shouted at her. Everybody was traumatized after the attack people had their doubts that she wasn’t going to make it others were worried she wasn’t going to be the same. Don’t many people get attacked by sharks 2 out of 10 people will be attacked by one each year. Luckily she survived the attack by staying calm and not panicking. After the terrifying shark attack, Bethany Hamilton demonstrated resilience by overcoming the tragedy to achieve her surfing dream. She's a hero if you asked me. Although it may not seem like it Bethany helped many people with achieving their dreams and never giving up.

Bethany Hamilton is a competitive surfer and one of the best in the world with only one arm. She said that for her resilience is something she developed over time. It grew much stronger after her accident and now is able to be much more resilient now when she reaches adversity in her life. She does not sweat the small stuff” and has embodied a whole new perspective on life being much for resilient.
