All, of the dancers in this music video are African-American, and it is very clear. None of their hair is straightened, they are all in Black Panther-esque outfits, and they are “unapologetically black.” The concept of this video is head-on addressing systemic racism. An obvious example is the dancers but there are also many more. For one, the opening scene, as referenced earlier, includes Beyoncé herself standing on a police car flooded in water while a clip saying “What happened in the New Orleans?” plays in the background. It portrays a message of comparing gender roles by a woman kvetching how men can easily get away with treating women as inferiors without as much as a scold. She puts her male companion in the shoes of a female to see if it would too trouble him in the same manner. For example, Ciara states, “sometimes I wish I could act like a boy”, this lyric alone can speak the stories of many women in today’s society. In addition, Like a Boy proves how active inequality between sexes still exists today. This also can lead to questioning of how successful all of the women’s movements and revelations truly were if
There are many artists that may contribute to the history that has lead to the development of the present day. Each different artist shows their gratitude and appreciation for the history that has lived on for many years by the style of music. For example, Beyonce’s album Lemonade illustrates the different struggles that black women had to face throughout their lifetime. However, when Beyonce’s husband Jay Z cheated on her, the album got much more personal than anybody else would think. Beyoncé's "If I Were A Boy" is a song about gender stereotypes, expectations, and their consequences. The music video for "If I Were A Boy" follows Beyoncé's character as a cop who treats her husband coldly; opening the videoshe and her husband say a few words like "honesty," and "commitment," then she wakes up to a fresh breakfast made by her husband, only taking a bite before sauntering off to work with barely a smile. All throughout her work day she acts flirty with her male co-worker; while her husband picks out a gift, she goes out for drinks and ignores his phone calls; when Beyoncé and her husband go out to a party he gives her the gift and for a moment they seem happy, but once they get there she ignores him and dances with her work
