Most unethical decisions are intentional done with some type of motive behind a corporation or persons actions. However, this article discussions for unintentional ways that unethical situations present themselves, which are concerned with four different types of bias. The first of these biases involves a person’s unconscious actions. One good analogy to reference is driving a car. In Dr. Aukers Consumer Behavior class we watched a video about people that drive their cars and get lost in a train of thought, arrive a location, and completely forget how they got to their destination. This is because that person has made that giving drive countless times and unconsciously remembers the exact route even if their mind begins to wander. These unconscious thoughts can also relate to associations or serotypes. The IAT test that is referenced in the article, is similar to the name game. Where someone says a word or phrase and you are supposed to react with the first thing to come to mind. The IAT test takes into consideration your time to associate a word or picture into a …show more content…
This has been a high topic of controversy in recent time regarding the practice of work place hiring’s. One topic that comes to mind involves the hiring coaches in sports. The NFL had to implement the Rooney Rule to give a fair chance for minority coaches to have a chance to be hired. This rule makes teams interview at least one minority person in their hiring process. This also relates to college and high school with the good-old-boys network. This network occurs when coaches are continually rehired by different schools of referrals or personal relationships and not based off skills or experience. This bias can cause companies to form bad habits in corporations by limiting the amount of people a company will look at during the hiring process. This would result in them missing out on opportunities to find hidden gems in a field of
A multitude of factors influence unethical decision making and behaviors such as employment, dissatisfaction with wages and benefits, etc. In the case of Crestview, it is the organizational culture of getting the job done at any cost, which encourages disregard for ethical considerations in the interest of achieving outcomes (Holzer & Schwester, 2011).
The Implicit Association Test or IAT is a valuable tool that those in the criminal justice system use; often times during the hiring process candidates will be required to complete the IAT so that hiring officials can see if they have any unconscious bias. The IAT is still relatively new in terms of psychological research only being created in the 1990’s by psychologist Anthony Greenwald (Kaufman, 2011). Individuals who take the race portion of the test are shown pictures of Caucasian and African-American males or females, then are given positive or negative words that they associate with each race as fast as possible. After taking the test it measures the unconscious bias that everyone has deep down (Kaufman, 2011).
Stereotypes are different thoughts that a variation of people hold about people who are different from them. A stereotype can be associated with a single word or slogan; such as nerd, or jock. Stereotypes can be expressed in either a negative or positive way. Most people apply stereotypes in a negative way to make them feel more superior over others. The category that most people would place me under would be the classification of an athlete or jock. The jock title that I have been placed under has been with me pretty much my entire life. I have played sports since I was four years old when I first started playing soccer and tee ball. From that moment on I
The study of sports analytics is a common strategy and performance tool for players and fans. Many professional athletes will study analytics to help improve their game. Not only do professional athletes use this to their advantage but fans and workers in the sports world can use it to study the game and make wise predictions. Sports analytics also provides an in-depth evaluation of how numbers can track a particular sport and helps us follow along to a closer degree. Sports analytics provides a strategy for studying player’s habits and the selected sport as well as digging deep into the root of the game and understanding it from an analytic point of view.
The use of computerized statistical analysis has developed into a vital tool in the world of sports. Using data analytics to project player abilities, indicative of their potential future performance, is now an important part of team decision-making. This analysis can provide information that makes the difference between adding a quality player, as opposed to one who does not perform up to expectations.
Racism is a belief that people of different races have different qualities and abilities, and that some races are inherently superior or in inferior. Racism in the form of discrimination persists in society. Racism in sports occurs in both team and individual sports around the world. Sports itself does not induce racism. Sports are meant to be a colorblind activity that adheres to the notion of fair play. Racism in sports is a problem which manifest around the world. It led to a wide range of controversial incidents. Racism in sports is only a big problem because the media is choosing to make it one.
The topic of minorities in the workforce and how the struggle to accomplish equal treatment in today’s workforce is nothing new to our society. For centuries we have been concerned that by bringing together our different backgrounds, skills, and experiences, as well as the many businesses of this great
Sports become stereotyped as gender-neutral, feminine, or masculine based on conceptions regarding gender, gender differences, and beliefs about the appropriateness of participation due to gender (Colley et al., 1987; Csizma, Wittig, & Schurr, 1988; Koivula, 1995; Matteo, 1986). Sports labeled as feminine seem to be those that allow women participants to act in accordance with the stereotyped expectations of femininity (such as being graceful and nonagressive) and that provide for beauty and aesthetic pleasure (based on largely male standards). A sport is labeled as masculine if it involves the following: 1) attempts to physically overpower the opponent(s) by bodily contact; 2) a direct use of bodily force to a heavy object; 3) a
In high school many kids often choose not to participate in extra curricular activities saying that there pointless or that only a certain type of person would do something like play football, or join the chess club. While this type of thinking may get some people through school and through life, can it really be looked at as being a healthy lifestyle? Today sports have proven to be a healthy outlet for students, in dealing with stress in the classroom at home and among their peers.
Prejudice attitudes have existed in corporate America prior to and ever since the first corporation began. As businesses develop with an increase in diversity, bigotry continues to evolve with older professionals who don’t see minorities as equals. Several significant events in history such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Act suggest a decrease in overt racism in the workplace. However, it is still prevalent in many parts of the country especially in the corporate world. In today’s society, prejudice attitudes and racism is often seen in company’s lack of representation of minority men and women. In other words, it is still difficult for minorities such as African Americans to escape the unfortunate reality that bias exist against them
There are many reasons why the number of minorities that participate is sports vary from sport to sport. Race plays a big part in sports as well as in our society. Why is it that a group of people can harass and abuse a young black male for raping a white female, but on the next Saturday at the big football game cheer him on and hope that he has a great game. Over the years there have been some great black sports players, in almost all sports. Michael Jordan, OJ Simpson, Mohamed Ali, Bo Jackson, just to name a few. When players like these come along that are black and sort of take over a sport, many white male sports fans say stuff like, "He's black, he's faster than the white players." This tends to be true, blacks dominate the speed
For my career research paper I have chosen to delve into the world of the sportswriter, and take a closer look at what that occupation may hold for myself. I have chosen to research this form of journalism because I consider myself to be a sports fanatic, and would very much enjoy spending the rest of my working days writing about the conditions in the world of sports. During the last year or so I have taken a period of time everyday to relax and read over sports articles from baseball and football at some of my favorite websites, such as espn.com or nesn.com, or to sit down and watch Sports Center on ESPN. I also seem to have an ability to remember statistics and rosters of players and
Ethics in Sports My name is john doe and I am the sports and recreation advisor for Stevenage. I am writing to every head of PE to express my feelings and opinions towards ethics and values in schools. My personal view of values in sport is that it comes down to the player’s beliefs in the sport and the standard he or she sets.
The world of sports has grown larger than life over the past century, especially in college. Being a collegiate athlete is, without question, the hardest athletic profession in the world. Not only are students devoted to their sport, which requires an obscene amount of time of preparation, but they are also devoted to their school work. And the award they receive for their hard work? Of course there are the great memories, friendships made, “free education”, or national championships, but are theses students receiving their fair share? Should college athletes be paid? It is a question that has been asked, but never truly answered. College athletes should be paid for their work. I even have the perfect system to see
A company must administer Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO) to those who apply, which means in no way should an employer base a candidates skill on their ethnic background, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or age. During the recruitment process, affirmative action policies make it a requirement that employers show initiative in hiring a diverse pool of applicants to fill positions available. We have a diverse pool of applicants that come and apply with my company. Most of the applicants will get hired regardless of their race, nationality or age, the best factor that prohibits one from getting hired on is language barrier.
