For centuries, the bible has been used as the primary tool to oppress the female gender. In

fact, to the average reader, the bible could be seen as an expression of male supremacy.

However, as we continue to grow in the faith, we must look beyond the obvious to understand

the role of the female gender and its relation to biblical teachings. This paper seeks to discuss the

role of female characters in the bible; referencing specifically the Old Testament and whether the

portrayal is either positive and or negative.

The Old Testament is riddled with references to female gender and their role in society.

By the negative influence of the serpent, Eve partook of the one

thing that God prohibited and in-turn gave it to Adam. It was because Adam trusted his help

mate, he ate of the fruit. It was at that time self-awareness came alive and both understood

nakedness and simultaneously initiated their separation from God and his perfect creation.

The book of Genesis and the associated creation story is only one of many references to

the negatives associated with being women during biblical times. However, this same section of

the bible has numerous references to the positives that the female gender brought to a family and

nation. Abigail, as referenced in 1Samuel 25 and Esther, as referenced in the book Esther;

chapters 1-8, are biblical references to the positives women bring to the table. Both of these

individuals played a pivotal role in saving their family and nation from certain death. It was

because of their love and usages of Godly wisdom we can are able to equate their success.

While some remain consistent in their negative opinions regarding women in the bible,

the Old Testament also gives light to the fact that it was through womb of a virgin that the key
