It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. The Jews took Jesus to the Roman headquarter where is the Roman court early morning and did not enter to the gentile house during the Passover celebration for the fear of being ceremonially defiled. Which that was the day before the Passover. -St John Bible is talking about preparation of the Passover.
