The sequence of temptation is the lust of the Flesh. The second is the lust of the eye’s, and the third is the pride of life.

The theme of desire has been portrayed in many novels and stories. Perhaps the most well-known depiction of desire can be found in the Bible. In the Book of Genesis, a snake tempts Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge after he convinces them that they will gain God’s knowledge of good and evil and be protected from death. Despite God’s word to not eat of the fruit, Adam and Eve did so anyway. Surely, this story portrays temptation; however, beyond the theme of temptation lays the theme of desire. Knowing it was wrong, Adam and Eve ate the fruit because they had the desire for what the snake promised them. The genre of the short story “Terrible Things” is that of an allegory, which is a story or poem that can be used or interpreted in a certain way to reveal hidden messages or morals. One reason why “Terrible Things” is a good example of an allegory is how throughout the story, animals are used as symbols to represent other things, like countries involved in the Holocaust. This allegory’s purpose, I think, is to try to help the audience, who can actually be people of all ages, to understand the Holocaust and how those horrific events could have been prevented if other countries and people stood up against the Nazis, instead of just looking away while men, women, and children were taken away just for being different.

The Drama of Scripture written by Bartholomew and Goheen takes the reader on a journey through the entire Bible in six short “acts.” The first Act discusses creation and the establishment of God’s Kingdom. In the beginning was complete darkness. Then, God created light and divided the heavens and the earth. He then split the waters and the seas, creating dry ground on which the rest of creation could walk. He proceeded to make plants and flowers and the sun, moon, and stars. He created days and seasons and animals of all shapes and sizes. And then, to add the finishing touch, God created men and women, male and female, He created them. The book states that “the Genesis story is given so that we might have a true understanding of the world in which we live, its divine author, and our own place in it” (Bartholomew, 29). Genesis 1-3, the story of Creation, is prevalent because it introduces the author of creation, humanity, and the creation upon which humanity’s drama unfolds.

In the bible Eve ate the forbidden fruit and tempting Adam to do the same and they took pleasure in the fact they disobeyed God. Similar to how Augustine took pleasure in simply knowing him stealing the pears was wrong. It wasn’t the act of stealing the pears, it was his “sole gratification in them was my own sin, which I was pleased to enjoy.”

Throughout this epic poem, Milton exemplifies how humanity’s free will leads to their downfall. The difficult aspect of free will is not choosing to love God, because that is easy. God created all that is good, including man. Therefore, there must be a hindrance that prevents man from loving God fully and unabashedly. Self-preservation and insatiable human greed are the causes for the fall of humankind. People naturally desire to forward themselves and keep the best possible outcome. The desire to place themselves above all others is truly what casts Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. When Eve first took the apple from the forbidden tree, she ate it because of her greed.

The Bible, one of the world’s most ancient works of literature established into a book several years ago, can be debated to be true or false. However, whether or not it is doesn’t matter because either way it is incredibly fascinating. There are some truths and mysterious secrets embedded within the Bible. I believe the Bible should be taken figuratively rather than literally. To think that a group of writers from the ancient past had integrated stories with important morals and philosophies. The Bible has remained relevant for centuries and unfortunately has been neglected by the ignorance by the generations of today. Believe it or not, languages and popular phrases have been passed from the Bible and they may not even realize it.

In addition, symbolism is a relevant and primary characteristic throughout The Aleph as well. A general theme of determination is evident throughout the story in more ways than one. An allegory is presented in The Aleph to exemplify determination within the characters.
