I have at least heard of eight out of the top ten. I have actually watched four of them (The Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, NCIS, and X-Files). I am interested in at least three more (Designated Survivor, Bull & Blacklist).
There are at least two prevailing themes present in these shows. There is the theme of the supernatural, present in The Walking Dead and X-Files. There is also the theme of crime, present in NCIS, Bull, and Blacklist. Crime is also at least alluded to in Designated Survivor and Empire. I personally have not seen either of these two shows, so I do not know the extent to which violence may be a theme.
I think that the themes that are present in these shows show that we, as Americans, are interested in "Justice" right now. Many of the shows in the top ten give us "Justice" (Game of Thrones, NCIS, & Bull, at the least). Big Bang Theory

And I didn't even start watching that until this past summer. Needless to say, I binge watched all six seasons and am anxiously awaiting season seven. That being said, I can only conscientiously choose that as my choice of show. Of the emotions that Zalaznick mentions, I think Game of Thrones fits best with the "Justice", "Moral Ambiguity", and "Fantasy" emotional states. My personal opinion on how this fits our current events, is that it closely resembles the Presidential Election. This past election was chaotic, to say the least. Much like most of Game of Thrones. In Game of Thrones, the premise is basically everyone is fighting each other over who will be the ruler of the seven kingdoms. Is that not in a way like our Presidential Election system, just not as bloody? Ok, maybe it is bloody in a metaphorical sense. I mean, have you seen how much mudslinging goes on in a typical election? And as for the winner of the election, he reminds me of King Joffrey Baratheon. He is a fool who does not know how to run a country without bloodshed and
* According to the National Television Violence Study, the context in which violence is portrayed is as important to its impact as the amount of violence. The study concluded that 66% of children's programming had violence. Of the shows with violent content three-quarters demonstrated unpunished violence and when violence occurred 58% of the time, victims were not shown experiencing pain. (14)
Ultimately, justice is what we are seeking in these entertainment driven TV series and movies. When criminals are held accountable for their misdeeds we as society are able to accept the misdeeds of others who are responsible for bringing the dangerous criminals to justice. A sense of peace and restoration of order is established in our hearts providing a sense of harmony in our
One popular theory suggests that many murderers are the product of our violent society. Our culture tends to approve of violence and find it acceptable, even preferable, in many circumstances (Holmes and DeBurger 27): According to research done in 1970, one out of every four men and one out of every six women believed that it was appropriate for a husband to hit his wife under certain conditions (Holmes and DeBurger 33). This emphasis on violence is especially prevalent in television programs. Violence occurs in 80 percent of all prime-time shows, while cartoons,
With producing reality shows comes producing inaccuracies in portrayals in order to reach as many viewers and gain as high ratings as possible every week with each new episode. Every day life is boring, yet people tend to be attracted to the relatable shows that portray real life in eccentric ways – ways that they believe could be imitated by the average person. In many cases, these shows could remain harmless, as it is entertainment. No matter how crude or erroneous, it is just television. However, what happens when these sources of amusement actually start being damaging? Research has shown that crime shows like the ever popular CSI: Crime Scene Investigation have started becoming significantly detrimental to criminal
The overall theme of this series is violence and survival. In the one hour and twenty minutes, there was a total of 43 violent scenes. There was a violent or gruesome scene about every 2 minutes. These scenes included the use of guns, knives and shovels to kill zombies. There were many scenes where it shows when the actors would shoot zombies on the forehead and fights among the survivors. Overall each scene was bloody and extremely graphic. By watching these television shows children are more likely to develop an aggressive behavior and play in a harmful way. Psychologically, it affects the child to the extent that they might want to imitate the behavior and become accustomed to seeing these shows daily. If they have repeatedly watched a violent show children are becoming less sensitive towards human suffering, and are growing up with a mentality that violent acts are permitted and
First of all, television has corrupted American culture by influencing our values. This is most prominently seen with the portrayal of gender roles in television programs, especially where women are objectified sexually. Such an environment is extremely dangerous
There is no question that television and films these days are filled with violence and antisocial behavior. Virtually every show, movie or news story nowadays has some sort of violent theme. Studies have shown that for every hour of television, there are 6 violent exchanges shown, and this number increases to 14 exchanges an hour
the law has allowed for shows like CSI and Criminal Minds to dominate the primetime television
When there is a mass communication takes in, it is easily connecting to few ethical theories used while the discussion heats. Part of people from the argument uses deontological views that one show is better than the other or vise verse. It tends to seem as this particular groups use of theory as in obligation towards the favorite show as somewhat of defendant position and
The TV series Friends and The Big Bang Theory are two of my favorites series. The television show Friends exhibits six main characters, consisting of three males (Ross, Chandler, and Joey) and three females (Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe). Ross’ role is based on his scientific knowledge and the importance of his values and his passion for his work. However, every time someone does not agree with him or believes in something else than science, he feels that not only his career but also his personal identity is challenged. He is stubborn and has a hard time admitting that people have different points of view.
Violence in literature, according to Foster, has cultural and societal implications, though in real life, an act of violence may not contain any meaning beyond sheer aggression. Foster makes the distinction that in mystery novels, violence lacks the extra layer of meaning, because the author writes it in for a different purpose entirely. After having watched several detective shows, I can confirm that the violent act merely serves as a means of creating a plot at the beginning, while the emphasis of the plot is more focused on how the mystery is solved, rather than the reason for the act of violence in the first place. However, in most other genres, violence contains another
Since the start of the 21st century new TV shows and social media have been on the rise. For example Steven Johnson brings up the hit drama 24 that used to come on Fox, the show focused on terrorism and it also was known for its violent torture scenes to extract information from the terrorists. Some articles are saying that those torture scenes in the hit series 24 influenced the abuse of prisoners by American military in Iraq and Guantanamo. I think that is totally wrong to say that a TV show influenced that violence its common sense that if you’re trying to get information out of someone you hate and on top of that they’re a prisoner/ linked to terrorism, and they wont give it to you, of course your next resort will be to use violence. Also hasn’t TV shows and movies especially military’s ones been based off real life situations not the other way around. Another reason why
The novel, A Game of Thrones, begins with an encounter with supernatural beings; this may give a false impression as to what will come. As the story begins to unfold, the theme moves strongly into the area of political intrigue and this forthcoming war that will happen as a result. The fantasy element, while always there plays only a minor role in the majority of the rest of the book. A Game of Thrones in not your usual fare, it is hard-hitting and bad things do happen to the good people. Two families take centre stage in a battle for the Throne the Starks and the Lannisters. The Stark family live in the cold hard
Thirdly, the American entertainment industry is the most vital and vivacious in the world. Growing largely out of the enormously successful and widely applauded American film industry, television programs and stars have found easy acceptance everywhere. American television has from the beginning, and until the advent of the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) in the late 1960’s, been conceived as a commercial medium whose major role is to deliver audiences to advertisers. The content has therefore been designed to appeal to the largest possible audiences. The format and the type of drama originated by the American entertainment industry have in the most recent era created new
In our study, we chose to watch an adult drama, The Walking Dead, which airs on the television network KCOP, on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and follows a group of survivors during the age of the zombie apocalypse. The second show we chose was a children’s cartoon, the Powerpuff Girls, which airs on the television network Boomerang, on weekdays at 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM, and features 3 girls with supernatural powers who are always called up by the mayor to defend the town. Goals of this study include quantifying instances of violence in these selected shows and comparing types of violence that occur in both types of shows based on how graphically detailed the violence acts were, if the perpetrators were successful, and how diverse the perpetrators and victims were.
