Big Four Tenets Of Masculinity

Men’s desire for power is quite overt. American society has always been and continues to be a patriarchal society, with men dominating positions of power from politics all the way down to family units. Though in recent years the extent to which society enforces traditional roles of masculinity, the ideas that men must hold power, be masters of their own fates, and have status still are upheld. As enforcing these norms can be detrimental to men’s health, society should abandon these norms and instead uphold everyone to the same degendered standards to avoid these negative effects. The principle that men should be ‘big wheels’ causes some men to be driven individuals but can also cause others to be aggressive towards others in attempts to wield their power. Some men become big wheels by having high power positions at work or being leaders in social situations. Others, though, don’t have the opportunity to hold these positions of power and seek to manufacture situations where they are dominant over others. The principle of ‘give’em hell’ relates to the wielding of the power as it basically says men should not be complaisant and have control always. The combination of these two principles causes men to need to show they are more of a man by aggressively exhibiting their power. As discussed in Michael Kimmel’s Guyland, many fraternity hazing rituals include the older brothers to belittle pledges. These rituals, which often have the pledges being forced to do humiliating tasks in order to join the brotherhood, are a chance for the brothers to show they have power over the younger pledges.2 One such act that Kimmel depicts istying ropes to pledges genitalia and pretending to throw a cinderblock off a balcony, which the pledges believe is attached to the rope.2 By forcing them to do this, the brothers are making themselves feel more masculine while diminishing the masculinity of the pledges.
