The name of the book I read is The Rivalry and it was wrote by John Feinstein. First, the book was about the big rivalry between Army and Navy. It was about how and what they did for their rivalry. A day before the game, it said that they had a lunch together and that whoever won the game would sing their fight song in front of the Cadets and then they would go to the losing team’s Cadets and would then sing their fight song. It was a big rivalry, but when not playing they got along better than what you would think a rivalry team would. The setting in this book is mainly in the Army Campus area, but if they have an away game against another team it will change to that stadium. Then, they would come back home and it would be at Army again. …show more content…
I especially like when they are playing a game and it’s a really close one. Secondly, the author at times might explain a little about the characters, but he doesn’t usually explain much about them unless it’s during a game when they give a little bit of background knowledge about them. The plot moves fast and slow. When there are games it feels like it goes a little bit faster than it does when there isn’t a game and they are just visiting or talking about the games. The imagery in this book did keep me interested because I could relate to several different circumstances that the players, fans, or coaches were going through. One example was when one of the Navy players had intercepted the football and then it was called back on a penalty. The coach, players and the fans were irradiated and the coach even said to the ref, “Is it written into your contract that you have to make sure Notre Dame wins?” I could just see that coach saying that because as a fan, I have been in that same position even though I’m not a coach. Finally, the tone of the author sometimes changes in this book. Sometimes it might be that the author shows frustration or the author might show excitement. One example of frustration was when one of Navy’s players intercepted the ball and scored. One example when the author showed excitement was after Navy had won a game and they were in the locker room. The author
In Rick Bragg’s article, “Down Here,” he portrays the importance of football in the South through his use of the rhetoric triangle. He establishes ethos through his stories of growing up in the South and giving various examples of Southerners that held football in such a bright light. He gives a logical reason for why the South is so dominant in the sport, establishing logos. Finally, Bragg uses the hardships of the South to create an overwhelming sense of pathos. Bragg is able to combine all three of these elements, ethos, logos, and pathos, to create a story that draws in the readers attention and has them hanging on to every word.
This question is honestly the most difficult to answer. The entire book was intriguing from start to finish. I would say that what I liked the most about this book is all the pictures he placed on there. He captured every image with so much meaning. It is as it’s said, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” I got to see the faces of the fellow heroes in Fallujah.
Characters: Stevie and Susan Carol are the two main characters of the book. It also had many minor characters.
In Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger uses powerful examples of the harms, dangers, and unethical behavior in football in order to evoke an emotional response from his readers and change their opinions about high school sports, specifically football. Bissinger explores the obsession of the Texas town of Odessa with football, showing the side effects of this culture. In America, the benefits of high school sports are heavily touted, but the dangers are often not discussed. Bissinger offers a counter argument in this often one sided debate in order to challenge the domination of sports in high school environments. By appealing to the emotions of his readers, Bissinger is able to make an effective argument against the influence and excessive love of high school sports in America.
Football isn’t just about going on the field and playing 4 quarters against another team every week. It’s not just those Friday nights going to watch your high school team play. Football is a brotherhood, it’s your second family. It’s making memories that you will have with you for the rest of your life. It’s the hours of preparation, sweat, tears, blood, bumps and bruises and going back out everyday just to give it your all. Football isn’t just a game that i’ve played it’s something that has shaped me into the person I am today.
I especially enjoyed the usage of colloquial language and slang words. As someone who has family connections to the Appalachian region, I appreciated seeing it used within the text of a novel. I do wish that during the presentation, the images drawn in the book could have been displayed somehow. Especially with the emphasis on the importance of the graphics in the story, I wish that I had could have seen them when paired with the reading to understand what they contributed to Dawn’s narrative. Gipe was a very engaging reader because of the tone that he used to read from Dawn’s perspective. With his sarcasm and emphasis on the parts that were meant to be humorous, I felt like I could better understand Dawn’s character and her perspective on the world. I enjoyed this reading of Trampoline and the opportunity to learn more about Appalachian
For example, when Alexandra finally admitted that she was lonely made me finally realize how strong she was. It takes a lot of guts and bravery to admit your true feelings. Another example is when Emil came back from Mexico and out of nowhere kissed Marie on the lips even though she was married! I never would’ve thought that was gonna happen. I was super happy when it did happen though. Even though they didn’t end up together, i’ve always liked the thought of them being a couple even though she was married. Emil seemed like a better fit for her. Frank seemed like a jerk to Marie. Emil on the other hand, seemed like the man who would take amazing care of Marie and keep her happy. He seemed like the man who would love to have a family with her. He has kept his feelings for her to himself until that very moment where it seemed perfect. He leaned over and kissed her. His love was so very strong that he couldn’t even hold it in anymore. This book is filled with many thrills and ups and downs. It helps you relate and connect with the plot and the characters and makes you understand the whole concept of knowing that being human isn’t all perfect all the time. It shows that you're going to cry sometimes. It shows how there is despair and agony in life. It helps you understand what it truly means to be
Tim Green, the author of “Football Hero,” has had a life full of playing the sport he loved, football. Because of a great high school career, he was able to play as defensive line at Syracuse University. With this in mind, he was able to put the lessons learned while playing a sport into his books. With his experience, in books he gives interesting background about the game and what it takes to be a “football hero”.
But, the way the author used symbolism, foreshadowing, and relatable quotes stood out to me the most. When I was reading and even after, I found myself making connections and thinking deeper into the books
Woods class was called winning in the trenches a book about the Green Bay Packers team in the very beginning of the NFL. it is narrated by hey offensive tackle named Forrest Gregg he gives such a vivid depictions of every single game every single practice and every single person he is with on the team as though I can see it from the comfort of my bedroom . Nick because you both play football I feel like this book will be fantastic for you I know you like the Steelers had to shame but that does not change the fact that this book is one of the best that I've ever read The Way Forest pics it and during certain games I feel like this could be a candidate for the Great American novel but it's not just I feel one book that can create a great American novel it has to be a multitude of ideas compiled together to create something that is allowed to be labeled the great American novel. but I digress. I feel like this would be fantastic for you the way the forest describes his playing time with Coach Vince it feels like I was alive and playing during the time he was the book and all is so fantastic and I would recommend it to every single person in our classroom if I could. It is such a phenomenal book and you just many literary devices and quotes from actual incidents that I feel like you would be an English teacher is dream in the one instance Forrest Gregg describes the second Super Bowl versus the Dallas Cowboys it was called The Ice Bowl he described the field in the way that makes me feel like I'm standing on it and how when they try to run a go and play the field is so wet and sticky that's a good couldn't find their feet to turn and run we've had that problem little bit 2 in our own teams. change this is one of the best books ever written and as you know that's my favorite team along with Miss Woods. Maybe because it's about the Packers I will get a couple of credit points do you
Odessa’s small size makes it complicated for people to lead lives separate from football. Most everyone can say that they have taken part in the football phenomenon, the Permian Panthers. Jim Lewallen may not be a parent, but football is what he lives for. Being a retiree, Lewallen has been long removed from the highschool scene and yet he still relies on football as a pastime. He takes satisfaction in the players accomplishments as if they are his own children. It is what he looks forward to and what keeps his life interesting and prides himself in knowing all the plays. While anxiously awaiting the beginning of the season Jim explains to Bissinger, “That football is just something that keeps me going’. You know the kids’ moves, you know ‘em personally. It’s just like your own kids”(41). The indirect characterization of Lewallen in this scene leaves us to infer what he is like on a deeper level, leading the reader to conclude that Permian football is the focal point of Lewallen’s life. It presents him as protective, almost fatherly. The intensity he feels is proven when readers are informed that the players are like his
Sports are a large part of America’s culture as well as Odessa’s. In Friday Night Lights, the players spend their entire lives training to be successful because sports are all they have to look forward to. During the final game of the season to make it to state, Ronnie Beavers told his team, “This is the last minute of your life” (326). Beavers quote shows the importance of the moment. If Permian does not win the game, they have nothing to look forward to in their future. This semi-final game is “much more than a game” for Permian. What Beaver is saying is ridiculous, the Permian players act like Football will determine their future. By following the players and the town, Bissinger is able to show readers how important sports are in Odessa. Bissinger notes how it was “obvious” that the students of Permian hold the town on their shoulders (XIV). By following the story of the American small town, including many personal anecdotes, Bissinger shows the effect that sports have in Odessa. Friday Night Lights supports Lapham’s claim that games represent much more than a game. It is not merely a game but a way of life. Permian players eat, breathe, and live football. Their lives are centralized around one thing: Football. Bissinger describes the town when he states, “If you went to their homes, you might find black toilet seats, or black seat cushions, or black phone book covers, or black paper plates, or black clocks, or black felt on their pool tables” (39). Bissinger throughout the book displays how the town revolves around sports. Everything that Odessa does is centered around the football team. The players train everyday to work to improving their record and that is all that matters to
Sports are a significant part of society and spectators enjoy particular events regardless of the type. However, there are many players who develop special working and social relationships with whom they are participating regardless of the type of sport. The relationship and how people interact with one another can be the determination of how successful a team can be. The particular film based on a true story that I chose is titled When the Game Stands Tall. This film consists of a high performing football team of De La Salle High School in the state of California. Jim Caviezel portrays the head coach (Bob Ladouceur) as a man with such vision and passion that goes beyond the fundamental principles of coaching the game of football. The football team had won 151 games without being defeated which is the highest winning record a team has had in the game of football. The film shows the internal struggles of the players in their lives as people, and how they perform on the field. It also shows the external tragic difficulties that they face while they attend and play for De Le Salle High School. In the movie, the head coach helps the students/players by not only coaching them but also showing them how to live a flourishing life by committing to endure difficult life situations and the way to overcome them. He helps teach the principles of brotherhood and companionship with the team that they build. In the movie, the head coach and the staff had taught the players
Another aspect that attracted me to novel was they way it was written. Although the book did have separate chapters, the way that it is written make the novel flow as if it was one big paragraph. There are moments in the story where characters converse but speech is not noted by quotation marks or paragraph breaks. This is a type of writing that even the most experience authors fail to accomplish, but Cole made it seem so effortless. Such a style of literature is bound to keep readers interested. If felt as if the reader was reading a diary versus a novel. Included in the novel includes forms of
You can really feel the despair and grief that the families and friends have cope with, and suddenly you become attached to the memories that are shared. The memories are the most golden parts of the book because they are like the clay that is being built up and once it’s sculpted, you can really see how beautiful the characters were and that sculpture is the preserved reminiscence of the three of them. The author makes it seem like the characters in the story are so real and you feel how they feel in the moment.
