Bildungsroman is defined as: “a novel of formation” or “novel of education.” The subject of this novel is the development of the protagonist’s mind and character, in the passage from childhood through varied experiences and often through a spiritual crisis into maturity, which usually involves recognition of one’s identity and role in the world” (M.H. Abrams, A Glossary of Literary Terms). Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are use this literary device through their main characters, Alice, and Max, as they grow either physically or mentally throughout their journeys. Alice and Max experience change that modifies their perspectives of the worlds they must navigate. Through the constant physical changes Alice encounters with her adventures in Wonderland, she learns to cherish her fleeting childhood and innocence. By undertaking an authority position in the land of the Wild Things, Max experiences mental growth and learns to appreciate the weight of adulthood. Alice begins the novel as a naïve child, who struggles with adjusting to new situations and the nonsense of Wonderland. She struggles with the continuous growth and changes of her body. Alice goes through various physical changes during her time in Wonderland that makes her uncomfortable.
