Melinda Gates, an American businesswoman and philanthropist, is best known as the famous Bill Gates’s other half. Some may even say she's his better half. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was founded in 2000 when it merged with the Gates Learning Foundation. This came after Bill and Melinda read an article about children in third world countries dying from diseases no longer an issue in the United States. They read this article in 1997. The Gates Foundation operates off of endowments and donations, but does not solicit for donations. An endowment is a collection or fund of money that is donated to a non-profit organization such as The Gates Foundation to support it over a period of time to ensure achievement of their mission. Currently, the total endowment for The Gates Foundation is $42.9 billion. Warren Buffet is a very large supporter via endowment to the Gates Foundation.

With such spending power, the foundation has been able to make great progress, particularly in the areas of global health.
