Our energy stores are shrinking as the demand increases by the day, and the fuels we use are not unlimited, we can only produce what we can extract from the earth. The countries with the highest demand in a petroleum energy are not the richest in these natural resources.
Petroleum is not limitless
Although scientists have not been able to estimate exactly how long the earths petroleum stores will last, they do know it will become harder and harder to find as time goes on. “It’s not a matter of how much is left, it’s a matter of how much you want to spend to extract the petroleum”. (A Scientist's Guide to Energy Independence: Oil. 2010)
Examples of this are all around us, the nationwide average for a gallon of gas has increased almost 400 percent in the last twelve years. This price hike affects almost every industry directly. This is an exponential growth, with no limit as to how high the prices could go, and no way of forecasting future prices accurately. Every seemingly small change in supply creates a drastic change in price at the pump, the demand for fuel is inelastic.
The extraction of oil from the earth has a profound environmental impact. There is much room for error when drilling and transporting the oil, pipelines sometimes break and contaminate the surrounding areas, drilling can contaminate the surrounding areas, and burning natural gas causes…
