More specifically, “leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.” Leaders take on great responsibility, they are open-minded, organized, and take initiative. Nelson Mandela embodied numerous characteristics of an effective leader. He is known as a global icon, and his leadership belongs to the world. Nelson Mandela was one of the most influential political leaders. Mandela has an impressive background which has shaped his leadership philosophy. In 1918, Rolihlahla (Nelson) Mandela was born into a family with a background of political influence. His father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, was the principal counselor to the Acting King of the Thembu people. His father passed away when he was only twelve years old, but he had instilled enough knowledge and influence for Nelson to know that he wanted to make a contribution to the freedom struggle of his people.
