Joanne Rowling, best known as J.K. Rowling, was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. Her pen name, J.K., was incorporated from her grandmother's name, Kathleen, so more men would read her books. As a child, Rowling always had a hobby for writing and would tell fantasy stories to her sister which eventually lead to the wildly successful Harry Potter book series that she thought of on a train ride. Harry Potter became an international hit which led to her writing a six-length series that sold hundreds of millions of copies and was adapted into a blockbuster film franchise. But before that happened, her education started with Wyedean Comprehensive School in Chepstow, England and then studied French at the University of Exeter. After studying in Paris, she went on to work for Amnesty International in London. In 1991, Rowling moved to Portugal, where she taught English for those who didn’t know how to speak it. She married a Portuguese journalist and had a daughter. She then moved to Scotland in 1994 and finished her first Harry Potter book with some trouble along the way. Rowling has received numerous awards and honorary degrees including: The Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, France’s Légion d’Honneur, and the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award. She was also a Commencement Speaker at Harvard University, USA.
