Biological Factors In The Development Of Homosexuality

Decent Essays
There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation. Although much research has be done. Researchers have hypotheses that homosexuality is caused by genetics, hormones, development, social and cultural influences on sexual. No findings have emerged that conclude these hypotheses that sexual orientation is determined by any of these particular factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles, however, most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation. It is just something you can tell from an early age (American Psychological Association, 2015).
Some of the factors that researchers have considered are biological origins, parenting styles, genetics, childhood sexual experiences, hormonal origins, anatomical differences and human nature in general. All developing embryos are equally capable of developing as either male or female. The deciding factor is the Y chromosome. Male homosexuality has long been hypothesized to result from some sort of prenatal testosterone deficiency. While the cause of such a deficiency is unclear, some have investigated maternal stress during gestation as a possibility. There is evidence from the animal literature to suggest maternal stress during pregnancy demasculinizes and feminizes male sexual behavior and brain morphology. This demasculinization may be due to a delay in a surge of testosterone necessary for sexual differentiation of the brain (Jenkins,
