Heather Kearns VanDeusen November 30, 2016 BIO 120-05 Identification of Unknown Introduction: Microbiology is defined as the study of microorganisms, which are found everywhere and measured in micrometers, because they are so microscopic. Bacteria are prokaryotic, which means they have no membrane-base organelles and lack a nucleus. Prokaryotic bacteria reproduce by binary fission. Bacteria can be harmful and helpful to the human body. Harmful bacteria are treated with an arrangement of antibiotics. However, not all bacteria are pathogenic, some are helpful to the human body. Natural bacteria that are helpful to the human body are located in the human intestines, which aid in the digestion of food and production of vitamins. Bacteria that are not found in the human body but are still helpful to the human body are called probiotics and are usually found in dietary foods. In order to understand the basic features of bacteria, it can be cultivated from the environment and brought into the lab to be examined. To understand classifications, like morphology, arrangement, motility, and Gram reaction, bacteria can be aseptically cultivated. These four characteristics are determined by the use of a compound light microscope. Morphology is the shape of the cell. Simple shapes are bacilli, cocci, and spiral. Bacilli are rod shaped, cocci are spherical shaped, and spirals are spiral/bent shaped1. Arrangement is the pattern, in which the bacterium lie. Bacilli are found in a diplo pair,
