The connection between how the brain works and how we learn is amazing, but should not be surprising. The article on the biology of learning describes education as "brain training" and gives a lot of scientific information about how the brain works when challenged with learning exercises. The Learning Style site gives more specific personal information about how best each of us studies. The resources on the brain and on sleep add additional interesting information about both these subjects and how scientists work. Knowing more about all of these will help students do well in college.
The article on the biology of learning starts out with the observation that definitions are important and that learning is the process of turning information

On the second reading I take some notes and compare them with the lecture notes. But I am definitely a "crammer" and study up to the last minute. I have noticed that I quickly forget a lot of what I learn for a test and that especially hurts when I have to re-study a lot for a final exam. I will try to read my text and take notes before the lectures and use time between classes instead of just in big chunks at night. This may save me time, be more efficient and help with understanding lectures. I have also noticed that it is easier to learn subjects I am interested in and unfortunately science is not on the list, at least not …show more content…
There are three learning styles: auditory, Visual, and Tactile.l. I tested out as a Visual style learner so they say I should write out the information I want to learn, use flash cards for memorization and explain diagrams and concepts in writing. I do some of this now but I plan to do this in a more organized and deliberate way and start with my first reading of the text. The article on learning also suggests that we verbilize and work with other students. I have not done this much before but I will try it this semester. I could be more efficient with my time and be more dedicated to education. I seem to be very busy, so I will have to re-think my approach to some
The first step to successfully study for any type of material is to keep the material organized and make sure the information is correct. A good routine would be to check notes periodically
“Just as students have different personalities, they also have different ways of learing (Slavin, 107).” Learning styles are another important factor to incorporate when implementing the best learning environment. Learning styles are defined as an individual's mode of gaining knowledge. The most common learning styles addressed are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory leaners understand information through hearing. Visual learners need more visual aids in the learning process, such as diagrams, webs, or pictures. Kinesthetic learners learn better by using manipulatives or by being physically involved in the learning process. Learning styles is a piece of the “backbone” of differentiated learning. Both are used to individualize instruction to help students achieve the most success.
This student’s preferred learning strategy compared to the learning strategy provided by V.A.R.K. is almost identical. The learning strategies that have been used throughout her education have always netted good results, which is evident by her grades. In the past other students have commented about her learning style and the amount of time spent on note taking, outlines, and writing out note cards, but she has perfected this process for her learning style.
I have learned while in college that the best ways for me to learn are by being able to see or write down something because it is something that I can review and still be able to grasp the concept when it is needed for a test. This strategy was helpful when I was in my English and math class. The second thing that also helps is viewing models because there is something that is tangible which makes it so much easier for me to be able to learn this is the strategy that I used while in my biology. The help of peers has also helped me with my learning process as well because there is not as much pressure when going up and talking to the teacher about what is wrong.
According to VARK, my learning style is Kinesthetic. As a matter of fact, Kinesthetic learning style is a learning style in which I learn best with direct involvement. Furthermore, VARK states that my preferred learning style uses experiences and things that are real. Additionally, I would learn better using my senses, as in field trips, real life examples, or trial and error. Not to mention, one Houston College article states that I should make things with my studies for recall. Another suggestion, is that I write my answers down or prepare index cards.
There are three main learning styles which are Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. The three of these are different ways of how you prefer to learn, and how you consume information efficiently.
Reviewing notes and readings just before class seems to be helpful, as before I used to only do the readings assigned as homework and would never review notes. I’ve tried it, and actually retained a lot more of the information. One thing that I might actually try is to get a visual calendar and have things due one day before they are actually due, so that I will not have any late assignments, and the work will be of an “A” quality.
From doing the Learning Style Inventory, I learned that I learn better when I write things down and when I have a visual of the information I am learning. For my writing style way of learning, I found I should take notes. When the professors give us notes I should write them in my hand writing. I just need to be able to read my notes because I write so fast some times.
I am a mixed learner and surprised about it too, my scores on the test were 50% auditory, 10% visual, and 40% tactile. To be an auditory learner I use sounds and have a hard time remembering things if they were not spoken aloud in some way. I am a talker that sings and hums to myself when I get bored or nervous, though I am paying attention or understanding what is being said, it does not seems as I am. There are many ways in helping bring out my learning style. These include sitting where I can hear, read out loud and have things read out loud to me such as tests and questions I do not understand or use flashcards to practice new words or the questions, also being read aloud. Being
Based on my personal inventory evaluation check list I have a combination of learning styles. I am a visual and kinesthetic learner. I definitely learn best when I am taught new information with some type of picture or visual. Also, having the hands on experience I feel helps me to retain information better. I tend to watch a lot of educational videos online because I feel it helps me to process the information and prepare for exams better. During exams I try visualize the
The final way of learning is the read and write style. This method could be efficient in some places. Although, sometimes you will not have time to write things down. A professor will be speaking and take no breaks and you will miss some information. You might be in a lab experimenting, and you will not even be near a notebook to write. The problem with reading is that sometimes you are giving more than you actually can read. You won’t always have the time to work in reading with your schedule. It would just be too
There are four main types of learning styles: auditory, kinaesthetic, reading and writing, and visual. Each of these theories describes how learning occurs and has its own terminology, perceptions on learning and generalities about teaching and learning. My personal learning style uses a combination of visual, reading, writing and auditory. I prefer using pictures,
Learning can be defined as a relatively permanent change in behaviour and/or knowledge that occurs as
Learning has been described by Howe (1980) as ‘cumulative’ i.e. whatever we learn at any time is influenced by previous learning. It is also clear that developmental processes and learning processes are closely interlinked. Whilst psychologists agree that learning is affected by past experience and is relatively permanent there are differing theories about exactly what changes when learning takes place and what mechanisms are involved. An important issue is whether the focus is on overt behavioural changes (that which can be seen) or covert, cognitive changes (the unseen change in thoughts). The concept of learning is broad and there are different psychological theories as to what is involved in that learning process.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
