Birth- Andrei was born in October 1936 to Anna and Roman Chikatilo, who were of Ukrainian descent. Puberty- Andrei most likely went through puberty later than normal, around age 16-17. This is assumed because his only sexual experience as an adolescent was at 18. He may have had lower levels of testosterone as seen from his smaller size, however that also may have been due to environmental factors. During puberty, he realized that he could not achieve an orgasm, which caused Andrei to have a low self-esteem. Temperament: Andrei falls under Kagan’s category of a shy child. He was very isolated and was bullied as a child, so he spent a lot of his time reading and memorizing books and notes alone. His mother, Anna Chikatilo, was an authoritarian parent. She was described as brutal and oppressive and was said to be abrasive and would beat Andrei for wetting the bed as a child. This may be a cause of Andrei’s aggressive behavior later in life, explain his shy, or fearful, demeanor around other people, as well as his social incompetence. His father, Roman Chikatilo, was uninvolved in Andrei’s life. Roman had to leave to serve in WWII for a most of Andrei’s childhood and was later taken prisoner and thought to be a traitor. This may have contributed to Andrei’s lack of social knowledge and why Andrei was emotionally withdrawn. As for self-control, the authoritarian parenting that Andrei experienced could have lead to a lack of self-motivation and self-control, instead receiving feedback on behaviors simply by being punished. Later in life, this could have caused Andrei’s impulsive behavior regarding his murders and
