There are so many types of birth control on the market today, your choices are many. Depending on your health, age, frequency of sexual activity, number of partners, desire to have children in the future, whether contraceptives are a covered cost for your health insurance or how much money you want to spend, some options may be more realistic than others.
The first type and most accessible method of birth control is the barrier method. These come in many forms such as male and female condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, spermicides and sponges. Considered most accessible because most of these you can by over the counter at your local pharmacy with no prescription required.

This includes methods such as contraceptive pills, patches, vaginal rings, implantable rods, injectable birth control and emergency contraceptive pills. All of these methods work with the body’s hormones to either prevent ovulation or, as is the case with the emergency contraceptive pill, to thicken cervical mucus making it more difficult for sperm to find its way to the female ovum. There are some drawbacks to birth control that interfere with the body’s natural hormonal process including weight gain, mood swings or blood clots because of the increase in estrogen delivered to the body. This is a small T shaped device implanted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The copper IUD releases a small amount of copper into the system with the intention of preventing the sperm from reaching and fertilizing the ovum. If fertilization does occur the presence of the copper prevents the fertilized ovum from attaching to the uterus wall, preventing pregnancy. The copper IUD can stay inside the body for up to 12 years but is not recommended for women who are prone to pelvic infection, have had cervical cancer or are prone to unexplained bleeding.
