Birth control and contraception are often used interchangeably. Some consider birth control as a blanket term and others consider contraception to be a blanket term. However, they are not necessarily the same thing. Birth control is defined as the control of birth by artificial means and contraception is defined as anything that prevents birth by natural or artificial means. Contraception can be stated as a material or device used to to prevent pregnancy. Birth control can be an immaterial and general term.
