Over many centuries there has been, and still is, a continuous dispute about the birth of humanity. As it is stated in the lectures and readings, certain experts uphold the idea of Creationism (Hunt and Colander, Ch. 2; McCoy, Origins of Humanity Lecture Pt. II, 15). Others promote the theory of evolution (Hunt and Colander, Ch. 2; McCoy, Origins of Humanity Lecture I, 2). Charles Darwin is also discussed by how he believes that time produces change through the theory of evolution (Hunt and Colander Ch. 2; McCoy, Origins of Humanity Lecture I, 3). In Opposition, Creationist back up their argument, that God created all things that exist through an act of spontaneous events, by sourcing their claims from the bible (Hunt and Colander Ch. 3; …show more content…
In Ocean Grove, New Jersey, Judge Solomon A. Metzger ordered that a Christian retreat house let their facility be used as a venue for gay couples to get married as they requested. Of course the people that operate the property were outraged because the whole reason why they denied the couple in the first place was because same-sex marriage goes against their religious views. It is somewhat understandable that they are upset about the final ruling in this case because it is almost as if they are being forced to put aside their religious and personal values just to make way for what is now being categorized as “socially acceptable” events. But really something such as this shouldn’t have to be forcibly accepted by everyone especially if it doesn’t go in sync with their morals. I believe that they think the judge mainly ruled in the couples’ favor for publicity in order to be a part of the trend that is welcoming gay couples to marry wherever they please. I don’t think that these people’s beliefs should have been placed on the backburner simply because someone was not satisfied with a No that they couldn’t get married there. The United Methodist Church made a statement saying “The practice of
There have been many cases over the years regarding people objecting to things based on their religious beliefs. By doing so, these people are sometimes in violation of federal or state laws that protect people’s rights and prevent discrimination. An example of this is when Bob Smith refused to rent out his banquet hall to Adam and Steve, a gay couple who wanted to get married there. Bob, a California resident, refused to rent out the banquet hall because Adam and Steve’s gay wedding went against his religious beliefs and he found their lifestyle to be immoral and ungodly. This case brings up several legal, moral and philosophical issues that will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
In the aftermath of Obergefell vs Hodges case, pastors and church members fear a nightmare scenario that will allow government action and lawsuits to force them to perform a same-sex marriage. With same-sex marriage now recognized as a constitutional right, we inevitably expect these future lawsuits that will attack the churches' core fundamental beliefs and First Amendment rights.
The gay couples who have fought long and hard to be able to have the right to marry were obviously be happy with the opinion. However those who are especially religious and who have fought against this will be angry and possibly even resist the decision reached claiming that the Supreme Court has no authority over them. Due to this more people who are avidly religious are likely to band together and claim that they can go against this with all their might claiming god on their side. This will create great friction between gay people and religious people, Even though there is already great friction between these 2
Since the beginning of the human race there has been a lingering question as to the origins of man and how all living things acquired their characteristics. The two main theories that arose over time were Creationism and Evolution, both of which provided very distinct answers to this question. Creationism based its answer on the idea of a supernatural power or being that created the entire universe, man and the numerous other organisms that live within it. While, Evolution theorizes that all living things have the potential to change and grow over time into something new and different. So in other words, one theory suggests that humans and all the organisms on Earth are the result of divine design, while the other indicates that they
Since the Supreme Court ruling that gay couples can now marry nationwide reports have surfaced of churches refusing to officiate gay weddings, not surprising. These churches have been put
Opposed to contrary beliefs, I “hate the sin, but not the sinner.” I will not condone it. I will not vote for it. I will not hate them, and I will not be a bully. I recognize that we live in a nation full of Christians and not a Christian nation which separates the church from the state, but my Christian faith does not agree with the practices of homosexuallity. On top of that, if gay marriage is not a “big deal” then why did people force the Supreme Court embedded gay marriage in the Constitution? With everyone arguing about the Supreme Court decision and that “Same-sex marriage is [now] a fundamental constitutional right guaranteed under the 14th Amendment”, an easy response is to attack the opponent by arguing that what happens under the roof of someone’s home is not the business of the government. My bigger question, however, is if the marital status of two people is not the business of the national government, then why did the Supreme Court have to hear and review to the court case to please the people? Shouldn’t the judiciary branch of the government focus on imposing more important policies for the betterment of the American nation instead of personal
The controversy between marriage equality and the exercise of religious freedom is a confliction between nondiscrimination laws and religious freedom laws. Religious freedom seemed to be an important aspect of an American citizen, after all it is the very first amendment to the constitution. With each American citizen being granted equality by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, discrimination made against an individual based on his/her sexual preference may seem to violate this act. In history, religious organizations typically been immune from state and local laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, with the cases of Obergefell v. Hodges and Kim Davis this stance is challenged.
On June 24th, 2016, the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage. According to The Williams Institute UCLA School Of Law, approximately nine million adults in americans are apart of the LGBT, not including the american youth and the others who are not out (Gates 1). With that said, these nine million adults are different compared to the others surrounding them. The LGBT has finally gotten their rights to marry whomever they want, and some people are against the idea due to their beliefs. Even if same sex marriage is against someone’s religious beliefs, should it be look down on? Homophobic statistics are splitting the nation, same sex marriage should not be controlled by the government, and churches aren't forced to unwillingly marry homosexuals.
Among young influential minds, The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington DC. evoked foster care placement to prevent the ability of children being placed in homosexual homes. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 16 states, “Men and women of full age, without any limitation...have the right to marry...found a family... entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution…” (UDHR, 1948). Not defending the ability to same-sex marriage. In New Jersey a Methodist Ocean Grove Camp declined a Civil Union Ceremony. Religious beliefs argue that in the bible God does not promote or support gay marriage. Supporting their reasons in the bible, as stated by God, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither...nor homosexuals...will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1st Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV)). Debates continue in several schools. At a school in Florida a social studies teacher posted a comment on facebook criticizing same-sex marriage. In other schools teachers dismissed students involved in homosexual relationships claiming to be uncomfortable. Therefore, many will argue the several consequences to allowing same-sex marriage, but the inability to see past the discrimination among Americans prevent a growth in our society. Positivity can be created through Americans creating a
If a same-sex couple comes to get married and is turned away, they feel this is unjust, especially now that marriage equality is officially a law in the United States, though many states are still denying it. How can the U.S. government have a law that makes same-sex marriage legal in all fifty states, an amendment that states the government will not intervene with one's right to freely practice their religion, and still have others' complaints being the reason for so many in jail? No, a religious leader should not be forced to execute a same-sex marriage. And the complaints of others are misunderstandings of the law. These ministers that refuse to do these things that go against their faith, are also exhibiting examples of civil disobedience. They are basing their actions on what they believe is right and wrong. This positively affects the society because many same-sex couples will now see that they are still allowed to get married, but they should not force ministers to go against what they believe
The LGBT community in the United States has always had massive difficulty fitting into our society. For many years they put up with constant mistreatment and other forms of abuse coming from the those who do not agree with their lifestyle. They have for long advocated for the acceptance of their existence and punishment for crimes committed against them. One of the hardest battles the community has had to face was the right to marry in a society that still holds the values of a traditional relationship which is between a male and female. The struggle was quite harsh but it all paid off by 2015 when the supreme court granted gay couples the right to marry. This historical decision did not go without outcry and criticisms. Most of the dissatisfaction came from those who hold very religious values and beliefs that claims homosexuality is a sin. Religion has always been a part of the American way of life since the nation's founding and with that homosexuality has been demonized throughout our society. Now that gay couple possess the legal rights to have a marriage license, religious companies and/or stores are now denying service to LGBT couples as they believe it sinful on their behalf to even take part. Many people gay or straight who fought for gay rights believe these is pure discrimination and that stores should not have the right to deny service for any customer for any reason. However, this belief is unconstitutional and goes
Let us look at the case of the Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk who is refusing to issue marriage license to same sex couples because of her religious beliefs. Although, she has the right to believe that the marriages go against her religion, she does not have the right to deny anyone the right to marriage (as per the law). Therefore, she should either
Its time for me to share my opinion and perspective regarding the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriages. Forewarning, this post will be long because I have more than just an opinion to express, but rather a story to tell which will enlighten anyone who chooses to read this as to what my true perspective and opinion regarding gay marriages. (and gay people in general as a Christian)
I join in with your feeling of incensed that, "The Judicial Council also decided, in separate rulings, that the New York and Illinois regions must ask candidates for the ministry about their sexuality and rule out those who are gay "or in any other way violating the church's standards on marriage and sexuality."" (Goodstein, Laurie. Methodist High Court Rejects First Openly Gay Bishop's Consecration,
The story of creation and the fall of man are the mainly studied and more diligently and critically analyzed in the Bible. They are contained in the first three chapters of the Book of Genesis. The creation story is highly criticized in light of scientists and other non believers due the controversy that exist between science and religion. While science is subjective, Religion is objective and thus based on opinion. Nevertheless, the Bible appears more correct and truthful compared the evolution theories. There are more questions than answers in the revolution theory, for instance, how can a monkey turn into human being? And if that’s the case why aren’t the modern monkey turn into human beings? In that case, the Bible stands to be the better version in regard to the beginning of human race. I am a Christian, a fully devoted one, and my analysis of the creation story is based on the Bible, and more specifically, on the first three chapters of the book of Genesis as contained in the New International Version (NIV).
