Auxiliary Compliance Outpost, also known as Bitch Planet, is were “non-compliant” women are sent to learn a lesson and develop into the ideal woman that society has created. The women are sent for a wide range of reason it could be for something as serious as murder; or it could be for the most absurd things such as gluttony, or being too difficult, too stubborn, or even for just being disrespectful. The corrupt system surrounds the prisoner with different messages each day reminding each other of the mistakes they have made by surrounding reminding the prisoner’s everyday they aren’t good enough. These women are made to believe they aren’t good enough to be on earth and have been disowned, according to this quote: “Earth is the father and your father has cast you out (Deconnick.) ” Most women in the comic book know this system isn’t emplaced to help them become a better women, but instead it's a place to put the outcasts of society. …show more content…
Prison does that by taking people who have committed a crime, sentencing them, and then gives them activities to help prevent them from committing future crimes. Prisoners need to be given the tools to succeed to be able to make a difference in their lives, but in Bitch Planet they are lacking these tools. Prison’s are meant to keep the public safe, but removing anyone who could possibly cause harm to innocent people. In Bitch Planet, these women are not being given the proper tools to change they are just being mismanaged and violent with them. The guards always turn into violence whenever the inmates act out, which if it’s used in self defense it’s fine, but they way it’s being used is just abuse towards inmates. The prisoners need to be surrounded by positive influences and images to help make them law abiding citizens, instead of “non-compliant”
For the past centuries, women have been fighting for their rights, from their right to vote to equal rights in the workplace. Women resistance is the act of opposing those in power, so women can have a voice in the world. Women in prison are often overlooked. In the 1970s, the women prisoners’ rights movement began, and it is still going on today. The number of incarcerated females is rapidly growing compared to men. According to Victoria Law, a prison rights activist, she stated that the percentage of female prisoners increased 108%. This struggle is significant because women in prison are being silenced; they are the most vulnerable people in our country (Siegal, 1998). Women prisoners have the highest rate of suicide because they are
Even though prisoners are incarcerated, they still are entitled to certain rights. There is a lot of debate about which rights prisoners should have because they can’t have too much freedom, and they also can’t have too little freedom. If inmates have much freedom, chaos would reign over the facility. No inmate would learn to truly change their ways and fit back into the community successfully. If too little freedom is given, inmates would be neglected and treated like animals. The perfect balance is needed to achieve a functional correctional facility.
After reading A Woman Doing Life : Notes from a Prison for Women, I learned a lot more than I thought I knew about the life of women in jails or prisons. Erin George , the main character , gives readers an ethnographic insight on the struggles women face in prison. The hardships women face in prison consist of, and are limited to harsh shakedowns, poor medical treatment, and changes within the prison system that intentionally dehumanizes women inmates. Erin George before prison was a middle class women who seem to live a decent life, she is a mother of 3 and had a great support system within her family. She was happily married until she was convicted of murdering her husband which landed her six-hundred-three years in prison.
The prison world is predominately male dominated. As the years go by, female incarceration levels have been rapidly increasing. The prisons in early days didn’t have to worry about dealing with two different types of inmates as there were not that many females incarcerated. While male and female inmates do have some similarities, they also have some distinct differences. The way they conduct themselves in prison are different; as are they way they interact with other inmates. Males typically are in prison for more violent crimes than women, making the maximum security prisons mainly male. Throughout this paper, these differences and a few similarities are discussed.
In prison, women are considered to be less violent than male inmate. This difference is not taken into account upon constructing prisons for female offenders. In fact, construction is based on the correctional model about men being violent. Each gender interacts within prisons differently as well. For instance, males form gangs within prisons. They act territorially and fight to maintain power. In addition, men are more likely to congregate by race. On the other hand, females look to form small families that are not racially specific. Women will fight due to jealousy. However, they are more likely to vent their hostility upon themselves through self mutilation. The way the prison is set up also creates a difference. Prisons for males dived prisoners via classification based on the dangerousness of the crime. In contrast women’s prisons generally allow incarcerated women to mix freely (Stuart von Wormer & Bartollas, 2011).
Creating positive influences on our prisoners can reap many more benefits than just educating and releasing back into society. Just as we invest money to educate our children, we can reinvest money to target populations that our prisoners come from to prevent crimes. When we teach them new skills that can better their lives, they can then teach others by example. Once an inmate enters back into society and gets a job in his or her field, stays away from crime, and makes better choices, they can make a positive impact on their communities. Younger generations can see the encouraging example set forth and know that they too can make wiser decisions and hope for the
However, female prisoners are still viewed by society as worse citizens than male offenders and are subjected to gender inequality (Easteal 2001). Female prisoners are seen as both violent criminals and as manipulators of prison officers and have been viewed as less responsible
I believe that the differences between women and men’s prison hurt the gender dynamics. Women are usually seen as the weak and easily targeted sex, while men are seen as the dominant and more aggressive sex. The state assists in continuing this stigma by the way they treat prison. For example, using the “Differences Between Men’s & Women’s Prisons” video for reference, women’s prisons look like a college campus and don’t look as “rough” as men’s prison because they have to match the “fragility” of women. Then there are the security measures.
In America, crime rates are going up and prisoners are being released from prison with a wrong sense of direction resulting in their finding themselves back behind bars within a short period of time after being released for an action that could have been prevented if the proper precautions had been taken. Prisons need to put forth the effort to resolve these issues and make America’s streets secure again. The criminal justice system in prisons is a rising concern in this country that is affecting many and it is time it was improved by reforming the inside of prisons, providing prisoners with more when released, and keeping them under surveillance after release to help ensure they will not return to prison, thus keeping crime at a lower rate.
It is common knowledge that the American prison system has grown exponentially in the last few decades. The prison population within the last forty years has risen by two million inmates. Multiple factors such as overcrowding and cost cutting have also decreased the quality of life within prisons by an order of magnitude. With this rising statistic, it becomes increasingly urgent to understand the effect of incarceration on our prisoners and whether the reformation process is actually doing more harm than good.
Once you enter a prison, you are in a completely different world. The sound of the door as it closes drives the realization home: your freedom is gone. Whatever luxuries you had before are gone. Everything you once took for granted you now long for, and contemplate with reverence. This being the case, there are now two new sets of rules you have to follow: the rules of the staff, and the rules of the inmates. Of course, these will conflict, but you have to deal with it now. Prison subculture is different from the outside world and even varies between men’s and women’s. The men’s subculture is probably the better known of the two. It has its own set of ebonics, attitudes, statuses, and values. Inmates say that
Every civilization in history has had rules, and citizens who break them. To this day governments struggle to figure out the best way to deal with their criminals in ways that help both society and those that commit the crimes. Imprisonment has historically been the popular solution. However, there are many instances in which people are sent to prison that would be better served for community service, rehab, or some other form of punishment. Prison affects more than just the prisoner; the families, friends, employers, and communities of the incarcerated also pay a price. Prison as a punishment has its pros and cons; although it may be necessary for some, it can be harmful for those who would be better suited for alternative means
This research paper will focusing on incarcerated female inmates in the US prison system. Mainly the systemacy, environment and also the ills which is hindering its advancement of this sector of the criminal justice system. Also, diving into the diversity, political affiliations etc.
One of the largest problems with the prison issue in America today is that it gets little attention. Unlike education, pollution or gun control people are usually not concerned enough to get involved with the problem until it happens to someone they love or
Prisons should be about teaching someone how to live a normal life and give them the tools to do that instead of just letting prisoners leave and not be a better person. One prison guard stated, “IT is not likely that inmates will have a few good years then get back into the crime game but 6/10 inmates will be back within the first year of release,”. This was not just a problem of weather the prison is in the city or the suburbs, but it is how the prisons work and what is being done to help the prisoners move back into the real world as good members of a society. I interviewed a guard at a local prison who wished to stay anonymous “I am beginning to think that these inmates can not be helped. It is a harsh thing to say but it is the truth. When I started this job I had real hope that I would be touching every prisoner's lives for the good of the world but as time went on I learned that these men and women do not leave here as good people”.There are people who devote their lives to changing the prison system but no major change has happened in the last 10 years, things have only gotten worse. My question was to find out why prisoners who
