I read the book The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. For this book I will be analyzing how the author's choices brings the text together and how the structure and craft affect my understanding of what constitutes a family. I will be using textual evidence from the story to show how the author’s choices and my further understanding relates to the book and the real world.
First, the author uses word craft to bring the text together by using details and imagery. On page 179 it reads, “that, and a vinyl record, a 78, propped up on a little wooden display”. On page 3 it says, “Two outpost of an old-war conflict - where Chinese and Japanese immigrants rarely spoke to one another.”. This quote shows how the author introduces the conflict of the story. The main conflict of the story is that it takes place during World War II. The Japanese have bombed pearl harbour which brought the United states into the war. Franklin roosevelt signed the executive order 9066 in 1942 which brought over 100,000 Japanese to internment camps. This is what the entire book is based on, and the author informs you of that in the first section. On page 3 it also says, “ ...Seattle’s Chinatown and Japantown, two outpost of an old conflict war”. This quote shows how the author introduces the setting of the story. The story mostly takes place in 1942 during World War II in Seattle’s Chinatown and Japantown. However, the story does jump to 1986 when Henry is older and has a son. The author’s purpose is to mainly describe the setting of the story. He does that by starting the book by telling you where it takes place, but also by labeling the chapters with dates or years to help you know when the story is taking
