BLACK BOX WARNINGS
Introduction:
A "black box" warning is the most serious warning in prescription drug labeling.
The manufacturers of certain antidepressants have already changed the product labeling to warn about a possible increased risk of suicidality with these drugs. But now a "black box" warning is being required for all antidepressant drugs.
SSRI AND KIDS:
• Suicide is the 6th leading cause of death for 5-14 y/o and 3rd leading cause of death for 15-24 y/o
• Adolescents age 15-19 _ completed suicide rate 0.008% (0.4-0.5% if depressed) Other studies suggest average 7% with depression
• Suicide attempts = 8.8% (35-55% if depressed) Suicidal ideation = 19% (higher if depressed)
• Availability of guns is the paramount risk factor for younger, impulsive individuals
• Among ages 15-19 years, firearm-related suicides accounted for 62% of the suicide rate over the last few decades.
• As in adults, depression in children and adolescents is treatable. Certain antidepressant medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can be beneficial to children and adolescents with MDD. Certain psychotherapy modules also have been shown to be effective. However, our awareness of antidepressant treatments in children and adolescents, though growing substantially, is incomplete compared to our knowledge about treating depression in adults.
• Recently, there has been few trepidation that the use of antidepressant
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the second leading cause of death for
Antidepressant drugs taken by children have been linked to increased risk of suicide. Exasperated mental health professionals began prescribing antidepressants to children and teens in large proportions in the 1990’s, even though studied safety of such drugs for use in minors had not been conducted. Consequently, standard growth models and brain development may be impaired by the use of these drugs. Moreover, children may be risking one evil for another as adult years could prove to hold adverse side effects and health risks from prolonged use of these drugs.
Antidepressant drugs, which can be lifesaving, are being underused in young people. Their use fell significantly after the Food and Drug Administration issued its black-box warning in October of 2004, stating that all antidepressants were associated with a risk of increased suicidal feeling, thinking and behavior in adolescents; later on that warning was extended to young adults (Friedman 1). The Food and Drug Administration-FDA ordered drug companies to place a black-box warning on antidepressant drugs, this would then allow parents to see the side effects the drug might come with. As antidepressants can have its benefits, it is not the only way to treat a mental illness like depression. The majority of parents believe antidepressant is the only treatment and that psychotherapy is a waste of time and money. “About 80 percent of people with depression respond positively to professional medical treatment--usually talk therapy, medication or a combination of both--and almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. Unfortunately, less than half of those with depression seek treatment(Clayton
Depression is difficult to treat in an adult, and treating depression in a child presents additional potential problems. Adults are often treated with a combination of 'talk' and drug therapy, but antidepressants are seldom recommended for young children, because of the potential side effects (although drug treatments are occasionally prescribed). Suicidal ideation has been linked to the administration of antidepressants in young children and adults. For a young child, medication would not be the first course of treatment prescribed.
Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. Nearly 60% of suicides in the United States are committed with a gun. Overdose using over-the-counter, prescription, and nonprescription medicine is also a very common method for suicide. In 2001 there were 400,000 emergency room visits, 30,622 deaths, 16,869 firearm suicides, 6,198 suffocation suicides, and 5,191 poisoning suicides. Suicide is committed because some people are depressed, they use firearms and overdosing on drugs to commit their suicide.
According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), suicide is the third leading cause of death for adolescents aged 15-24 years old. This calculates to 33,000 adolescents killing themselves each year (CDC, 2010). The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), reported that suicide amongst all individuals nation wide has declined over all, but despite the decline, adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 have shown suicide rates that has increased by 6 percent (NCSL, 2005). The most staggering number, however, comes from the population of children between the ages of 10 and 14. For these individuals, suicide rates have increased by more than 100 percent (NCSL, 2005). In this paper, I seek to address the
Furthermore, according to the SAVE (2003-2016), in 2014 there were 42,773 deaths by suicide in the United States. The Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death and homicide ranks 17th. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15 - 24-year-olds. Likewise, refer to the Chart and the Age Disparities (USA) below:
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death across all ages in the United States. It is also the second leading cause of death for 15 - 35 year olds nationwide. The World Health Organization (or WHO) estimates that approximately 1 million people die every year from suicide. However, almost twice that number that attempt it and survived. In Georgia suicide is the third leading cause of death with roughly 1,000 death per year. Suicide has lasting effects on families and communities; Understanding the risk factors, recognizing the warning signs and taking them seriously suicide becomes very preventable.
Suicide has become a major problem in the United States and it's become too big of an issue to ignore. It is the leading cause of death in teens. The yearly rate has increased to 42,773, and suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, while homicide ranks at number 17.
Up until a few decades ago, you could never think about linking children with mental depression. Children were considered too small or just too immature to be depressed. Children were always happy as they had very few tensions and we, as their parents, would ensure that nothing too stressful intruded into their idyllic lives. They were never ever depressed. Unfortunately, with changing times come changing rules of civilization! We are now in the 21st century, and nowadays, depression among children is common. Doctors have now recognized mental depression in children as a clinical issue that is causing rising concern all over the world. More and more children, are being recognized by doctors or psychiatrists as suffering from mental depression.
Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24. Approximately twenty percent of teens experience depression before they reach adulthood. I am apart of that twenty percent.
Suicide and the reasons why they happen is something not many people talk about. According to American Psychiatric Association, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between eleven and eighteen years of age and the suicide rate is highest for those who suffer from depression, substance abuse or other mental disorders. But I would have to argue this, I believe that teen suicide has increased over the years because of bullying, parent divorces and depression.
A. Attention Material: It has been verified on April 19th, 2013 by the Center for Disease Control that for youths between the ages of 10-24, suicide is the third leading cause for death in the United States. (Center for Disease Control: Teen Suicide Statistics, Chart number 1)
Firearms contribute to high suicide rates. Fire arms are different than other suicide methods in one key aspect: attempts are much more likely to be fatal. Other means of attempting suicide are take time, less reliable, and more likely to survive and get counseling. Harvard Injury Control Research Center find that the fatality rate of suicide attempts with a firearm exceed 90%, compared with a fatality rate of less than 5% for other common suicide methods (117). The suicide with gun is biggest concern in teenagers and young adulthood. When many people experiencing, pronounced emotional and social difficulties without having the life experience or maturity to put them into
states. The suicide rates for teens are astronomical. Writer Stephanie Pappas mentions teen suicide rates in her article Suicide: Statistics, Warning Signs and Prevention. In the article, Pappas writes “In 2015, suicide was the second leading cause of death in people 15 to 34 years of age and third leading cause of death in children aged 10 to 14, according to the CDC.’’ (Stephanie
