1 . What issues most concerned black political leaders during Reconstruction? Reconstruction brought important social changes to former slaves. Families that had been separated before and during the Civil War were reunited, and slave marriages were formalized through legally recognized ceremonies. Families also took advantage of the schools established by the Freedmen's Bureau and the expansion of public education, albeit segregated, under the Reconstruction legislatures. New opportunities for higher education also became available with the founding soon after the Civil War of black colleges, such as Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Fisk University in Nashville,
Many historians argue that race has played a central role in the history of the United States. The statement previously made is a factual statement because there is historical evidence to prove it is true. Knowing and taking in count that there is a lot of racial discrimination for all different races, our main focus will be on the African American (black) race.
Black Alliance for Education Options is an organization that was created to help black children with getting an education. “BAEO was officially launched in August 2000 after African-American educators and parents held a series of meetings in Milwaukee and Washington, DC. BAEO’s co-founder and chair is Howard Fuller, the former superintendent of the Milwaukee public schools and a Marquette University professor.” (Activist Facts) By helping they make it possible for African American families with low income to be able to send their children to either public, private, charter, or even be home schooled. BAEO is all for what the children need and wants.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities, established in the south by black ministers for African Americans who were freed from slavery. The first known HBCU was a school in Philadelphia called Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Today there are 100 private and public institutions. Some of the top colleges are Spelman College, Morehouse College, Morgan state university, Virginia State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Union University. On the other hand, A PWI, predominantly white institution, was established prior to 1964. These schools were mostly for whites but of course some of these labeled PWI’s were slightly integrated. Some PWI’s are Virginia Commonwealth University, Clarke University, Huntington University.
The White house is a symbol of the American democracy. The main attractions here include information and artifacts about the first families, home furnishings and social events. Visitors to the executive mansion must reserve a ticket in advance. In spite of security checks, visitors are allowed to carry cell-phones and
We live in a Nation that has the highest incarceration rate in the entire world, standing at about 700 for every 100,000 people are incarcerated. To put that into perspective that's about 1.6 to 2 million people of the 315 million people in the U.S. With about 40% of them being African American. 40% may not sound very high but, the surprising fact around all of these statistics, is only 13% of the entire population is African American. You may ask yourself how is this possible? Well let’s talk about that. The three major factors that contribute to high black incarceration rates are due to broken black communities/growth roots, the recidivism cycle and prejudice among police forces.
The reading touched on how the building of black schools was financed. I found it interesting that most of the financial contributions were personal contributions from Blacks and taxes paid by black while the philanthropists gave less than 20 percent of the amount needed. However, because the elementary schools were referred to as Rosenwald schools the contributions of Blacks were often relegated to the background. Although, the contribution of the philanthropists did not equal that of the Blacks we see a usurping of power in how they stipulated that, as part of their agreement, the school would be deeded to the southern local school system.
Black History Month is a very important month which, occupies a very important place in history. We remember and celebrate the contributions of many heroes for giving us hope and a remarkable history. We honor their accomplishments and determination to give us freedom. I am thankful and joyful for this month as it is a time of rejoicement of those individuals who gained rights for their race. A period of time when these heroes stood up for what they believed was right was during the period of racial segregation.
Have you ever wondered what life is like in someone else's shoes? John Howard Griffin is walking in his own shoes as a different person, or so everyone thinks. In his novel Black Like Me John Howard Griffin changed the pigmentation of his skin to discover what life is like for an African American in the deep south of the United States. Not all of his discoveries are pleasant about how whites would treat Blacks, but some are completely astonishing.
Why is it that “#blacklivesmatter” is only read and hashtagged in regards to police brutality? How come the names of Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, and Trayvon Martin are instantly recognized, but most people question who Amber Monroe, Elisha Walker, and Shade Schuler are? Why was Bruce Jenner’s transformation into Caitlyn Jenner more important than the deaths of the 17 transgender woman murdered this year? A hate crime is defined as “a crime motivated by racial, sexual, or other prejudice, typically one involving violence.” Monroe, Walker, and Schuler are all African American transgender woman and victims of hate crimes. This isn’t a situation where only black transgender woman lives are being taken though, all transgender women are suffering
During the late eighteen hundred there were many poor immigrant families who migrated to the United States to have a better opportunity. As a result, many poor families ended up working on really terrible jobs with terrible conditions (469). To escape from the cruel reality of their horrible jobs many big cities had Amusement Parks where the middle and working class family would go to enjoy shows and attractions like the famous “Trip to the moon” (463). Many other families realize that is was not like they had imagined it would be so in the night they would remember how their life was back in Europe (469). In the night many people would look up to the starts and fall sleep looking at the window from their tiny apartment (470). Even though these tactics of remembering the past, going out to Amusement Parks and star gazing did distracted the mind from their work it didn’t actually improved the working conditions on which they worked so they were highly ineffective.
Recruiting minorities in the police field can be very difficult for many different reasons. For the African-Americans minorities they already have problems, and that was being slaves. African-American's were not seen to be able to hold power and to give authority rule, but have it told to them. These men in the early 1940's could be police officers, but could not arrest whites and only worked in the black neighborhoods. They gave the men jobs, because of the 14th amendment but stripped them of all police powers, other than arresting their own kind.
As a African American student I fell we need a reform because I get mistreated at school I get beaten and spit on. The teacher treated us differently like we're not human to and I asked why is she so rude and she hit me. After that at lunch none of the kid wanted to sit by me when they did it was to make fun of me not being friends. Also every where I went I saw a police officer. And I though to myself why is he here is he trying to protect or punish me. When I went to class everyone was looking at me if I was a alien and none of them invited me to sit by them. To make matters worse the teacher was making fun of me to and she asked me why I'm I here I said for education and everybody laughed at me and started saying racist slurs. And then I
The Black Panther Party The Black Panther Party took a radical turn in history. Their main goal was to redeem the nation through violent means. The Panthers were also entwined in the Black Power and antiwar movement. Many white Americans were taking over both movements and consequently alienating black Americans. Within the Black Panther Party, the leaders had differing philosophies: Martin Luther King's approach to change was centered on non-violence and Malcom X believed that violence was a necessary means.
Throughout history, many different minority groups have been treated unfairly. Although African Americans, Latino Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans are all minorities, they are similar in the ways of getting treated negatively, but they differ significantly. While some experience different situations in their early histories, stereotypes, discrimination, and other important issues. Some of these minority groups have these issues similar or worse than others.
