BlackBerry is a line of wireless handheld devices ¬designed and marketed by BlackBerry Limited, formerly known as Research In Motion Limited (RIM). The first BlackBerry device, an email pager, appeared on the market in 1999. (1) The two-way pager is almost never used anymore, which is a good demonstration of just how fast the technology has been developed. The pager was considered a novel product since most of handheld devices up until then had only one way communication. The original BlackBerry allowed the person who was receiving the message to respond to the sender by using a keypad.
The most recent (2013) BlackBerry devices are the Q10, Q5, Z30, and Z10. Most of the models had relied on a physical QWERTY keyboard, while newer

Working Ventures Canadian Fund Inc. led the first venture round with the capitals being used to develop RIM's mobile device. (5) RIM worked with RAM Mobile Data and Ericsson to turn Mobitex wireless data network developed by Ericsson into a two-way paging system and wireless e-mail network. The company made its first public offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange in January 1997 under the symbol RIM. (4)
In 1999, RIM was listed on NASDAQ under the symbol RIMM, but the bigger event was the introduction of RIM 850, the first BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard. (4) The device had a six- or eight-line display and allowed users to send email, messages and had address books, calendars, task lists, a calculator and an alarm function. The device was the first-featured smartphone that connected people to their corporate email and contacts and led the smartphone market for a decade. According to IDC, RIM sold the most smartphones in the United States for the first quarter of 2008. (7) RIM successfully broadened the appeal of the BlackBerry to more than just professionals with new consumer-friendly devices like the BlackBerry Thunder and the BlackBerry Bold. The company was well-positioned to
Due to Canadian innovation and ambition, Canada became the country it is today, just like BlackBerry, which had to think of clever and innovative products to stay ahead of the competition. Research In Motion Limited (RIM), now known as BlackBerry Limited, was co-founded in 1984 by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin as an electronics and computer science business based in Waterloo. The first RIM devices were the Inter@ctive Pager 900, 800 and 850, these were wireless handheld two-way paging communication devices. Computer company, IBM, bought $10 million worth of Inter@ctive Pager 800s after the success of their previous device, the 900. These devices became very successful, and shaped RIM’s way of thinking and product line. In 1997, RIM goes public on the Toronto Stock Exchange and two years later, they release the first handheld computer under the BlackBerry name, the BlackBerry 850, an email pager.
This paper investigates two problems (a software and hardware) with at least five usability problems which are solely poor user experience knowledge, interactions and poor systems. As a result, this paper identified the following systems: 1. BlackBerry Operating System (OS) as a software problem and 2. BlackBerry Curve 9320 as a hardware device problem. This paper will furthermore describe both the issues in detail and provide possible solutions to the identified problems. The following table provides you with a summary of problems for each system identified in this
Primarily, RIM is well known for developing Blackberry, a cellular smart phone that was established in 1984. Blackberry is one of the very few cellular device companies that introduced and supplied people
RIM was able to develop the pagers to send messages and emails on either network. RIM broke away from the pack in September of 1996 when it introduced its ‘Inter@ctive’ pager. Developed jointly with Intel, Inter@ctive was a game changer due to having a built-in contact manager, scheduler, a 16-bit operating system, a full QWERTY keyboard, a display that showed up to 4 lines of text, and could hold up to 100KB of data. The list price was about $675, not including service fees. It was released in 1997 and quickly became the company’s best-know product (“Research In Motion,” 2003).
* 2012 – Apple overtakes RIM on its own turf. According to new figures from IDC, RIM shipped 2.08 million BlackBerrys in Canada in 2011 compared to Apple’s 2.85 million iPhones. In 2010, RIM shipped half a million more BlackBerry devices than Apple did of its smartphone, while in 2008 the BlackBerry outsold iPhones by a factor of five to one.
Research In Motion (RIM) was founded by University of Waterloo engineering student Mike Lazaridis in 1984 who is the current Co-CEO. In 1988 RIM becomes the first wireless data technology developer in North America and the first company outside Scandinavia to develop connectivity products for Mobitex wireless packet-switched data communications networks. 1997 RIM becomes a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange. 1999 RIM introduces the BlackBerry wireless email solution, BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software for Microsoft Exchange and signs a supple agreement with Dell. RIM has offices located in North America, Europe and in Asia-Pacific. The corporate structure of RIM consists of co-CEO’s Balsillie, who also holds the position of chairman, while Lazaridis is also the company president. There are two chief operating officers; a chief financial officer; a vice-president, Enterprise Business Unit; and vice-president, Corporate Marketing.
Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, co-CEOs of Research in Motion (RIM) has been accosted with an inevitable crisis situation. In an article from Charles Arthur (2013) of The Guardian newspaper has stated that, “three days RIM engineers worked around the clock to fix the widespread technical outages from their server networks.” When a predicament situation arises management has to squash the circumstances that manifested from the problem. However, BlackBerry® executives were only providing a lack of concise statements to the public, causing frustration over the exacerbated circumstances, many consumers have become increasingly anticipated of the newly launch of the Apple iPhone 4. The CEOs have conferred the challenging situation of how RIM should
In 2011, Apple increased their market share from 15.6% to 19% while RIM fell from 16% to 10.4% (Global Mobile Statistics, 2012). There are several different prospering smart phone brands that are negatively impacting RIM’s financial success. Not only are there a large number of competitors, but they are also well known companies such as Sony, Samsung, Google, and Apple to name a few. These are dominant companies in the electronics sector and all of which have large fixed costs so they must operate at economies of scale and produce near capacity. In turn, they have to sell all these products so that competition becomes more aggressive (Clegg pg.62). These companies all have the competitive advantage of offering their consumers another product lines whereas BlackBerry only offers phones and the new PlayBook which hasn’t been overly successful.
Mike Lazaridis, RIM’s CO-Chief Executive Officer, was a passionate advocate for the power of basis science to improve and transform the world. With his engineering degree, Lazaridis is responsible for product strategy, research and development, product development and manufacturing. Jim Balsillie with more charismatic and outgoing personality brought his wealth of business knowledge to RIM. With such strong leading executive team, RIM had achieved a great employee growth by department from Fiscal 1999 to 2001. (exhibit 3) Moreover, RIM has a well-developed corporate culture that celebrates achievement, creativity, and risk taking. Employees at RIM were well compensated and motivated by various benefits, at the meanwhile, RIM is also famous for its corporate giving to the communities.
RIM was a latecomer to the phone application and touch screen technologies, which are currently the most desired options available on the market. BlackBerry App World went live on April 1, 2009 whereas the Apple App Store opened July 10, 2008 and the Android Market now titled Google Play debuted October 22, 2008. It seems that apps were somewhat of an afterthought to RIM and developmentally, they began the race after Apple and Android were miles ahead. BlackBerry is not known to be a “fun” phone, which can limit its consumer market to business-minded individuals and an older age bracket, possibly alienating the vital teen-early
2008-09, RIM‟s market share kept on escalating with it acquiring a good deal of market while also expanding its product portfolio to cater to the need of people at the same time.
