“There comes a time in most men's lives where they feel the need to raise the Black Flag”- anonymous. This is a short theoretical quote depicting the allure that normal men can have towards a pirates intriguing and free spirited lifestyle. Despite their negative reputation, Pirates had many characteristics that the average man could find appealing.
Examples of these characteristics are a vast knowledge of the ocean and sea travel, their barbaric tactics in warfare, and their fearless attitude. Pirates were the kings of the sea, living a fast, dangerous, and thrilling lifestyle. They were fearless fighters, barbaric, and often merciless. These traits were depicted best by one of the most famous pirates named Edward teach, better known as Blackbeard. However, despite being successful for a long time on the open ocean, Blackbeard, along with most other pirates of the time, were ultimately defeated by the government. …show more content…

They were referred to as “Buccaneers”. Buccaneer comes from the word boucanier which means “one who smokes meat on a boucan”. Pirates would set up fires and smoke meat on them. The smoke would attract ships to come, thinking it was a spot to trade. When the ships would come to the smoke, these “Buccaneers” would steal their ships. After this became common, pirates were chased off of the Islands. Though they were chased off, they continued to raid ships and live an even more barbaric lifestyle on the sea. The pirates at sea would raid ships in hope to find valuables and treasures. They sailed the Caribbean because after Columbus’ discovery of the new world, the Caribbean became a huge trading
